Use a browser capture script to record product pages, then run it on a recurring schedule. For a self-managed setup, Playwright captures the page and a scheduler launches the script; a managed service can handle recurring captures and delivery. Screenshots can flag apparent changes, but they do not verify live inventory or explain exactly what changed.
Choose a capture method

Build a self-managed Playwright schedule
1. Define what you need to observe
Make a list of product-page URLs and choose an interval based on how often a useful observation is needed. No interval guarantees live stock data: a screenshot is only a record of what the page rendered at capture time. Review the target site’s terms before automating access.

2. Choose the capture scope
Use a viewport screenshot when you need the visible context, a full-page capture when the relevant details may be below the fold, or a selected element when you only need the product details. Playwright documents these capture options in its screenshots guide.
3. Capture the page and save a timestamped file
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in the environment that will run the job. For example, with Node.js:

To capture the whole scrollable page instead, replace the locator screenshot call with await page.screenshot({ path: `${outputDir}/product-${stamp}.png`, fullPage: true });. For only the current viewport, use the same call without fullPage: true. The selected element must exist and become visible; choose a selector that matches the actual page rather than assuming every retailer uses the same markup.
4. Make page state as repeatable as practical
Keep the browser version, operating system, viewport, and capture settings consistent. Wait for the actual product details rather than relying only on a fixed pause. Handle predictable consent or other overlays explicitly in the normal capture flow; Playwright’s guidance covers handling page events and overlays. Login requirements and dynamic content can still change what is captured.

5. Run the script repeatedly
A recurring workflow starts the capture script at the interval you choose; the browser script and scheduler are separate parts. On a Unix-like host, a cron entry can run it daily at 9:00 a.m. in the host’s local timezone:
0 9 * * * cd /path/to/project && /usr/bin/node capture.mjsUse your scheduler’s equivalent on other systems, and confirm its timezone, working directory, runtime path, and log handling. Store captures with timestamps so you can trace each observation to its run.

Compare captures without mistaking noise for a stock change
A visual difference is a signal to inspect, not proof that price or availability changed. Playwright notes that rendering may vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; keep the environment consistent and inspect flagged results. See its visual comparison documentation.
- Review the new image alongside the prior capture before treating a difference as meaningful.
- If the goal is a price or availability history, also record the displayed price and availability text through a permitted structured check of the page content. A screenshot alone may not identify which text changed.
- When sending alerts, describe the result as “the captured page appears to have changed” and link to the observation, rather than claiming confirmed inventory movement.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The selector times out: Check that the selector matches the current page, that navigation reached the expected product, and that the element is actually visible. Some pages render product details later or use different markup.
- The screenshot shows a consent dialog or popup: Make the page state explicit and handle predictable overlays in the capture flow. If using a service, check its available cleanup controls and confirm the result.
- The image is blank or incomplete: Confirm the URL loads in the scheduled environment, wait for the relevant element, and inspect the job’s logs and timeout behavior. Dynamic or blocked content can differ from a normal interactive visit.
- Every comparison looks different: Standardize browser and host settings, viewport, and headless mode; compare captures manually before treating visual changes as meaningful.
- The scheduled job does not run or cannot find files: Check the scheduler timezone, working directory, Node.js path, installed browser, and write permissions for the output directory. Capture logs so failed runs are distinguishable from unchanged pages.
- An alert suggests a price or stock change but the image is ambiguous: Treat it as a review prompt. Record relevant displayed text as well if your goal requires a precise history, and ensure the method complies with the site’s rules.
