Use a browser automation script to open the specific public service page, save a timestamped screenshot, and run that script with the scheduler available on your computer or server. Keep the browser environment consistent if you plan to compare captures. First check the target website’s own terms and access guidance: official guidance does not establish blanket permission to automate screenshots across every Indian government service website.
Before scheduling a capture
Choose a public page and a clear purpose
Start with a specific informational or service landing page, rather than a transaction. The National Government Services Portal describes itself as a single-window interface to services provided by government departments, so it can help you locate a service. Its linking policy does not grant permission to automate capture of every linked website.
Check the individual site’s access guidance
The Government of India’s Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and Apps (GIGW) cover website quality, usability, security and accessibility. They do not provide universal authorization to automate screenshots on every department or service domain. Read the target site’s terms and access guidance. Keep a scheduled visual capture passive: do not log in, submit forms, or interact with a service transaction. If the site denies access, stop and contact its owner rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Playwright’s Page API supports navigating to a URL and saving a screenshot. This Node.js example captures a public landing page, names the image with the capture time, and writes a small text record with the URL and timestamp. Change the URL and output directory for your use case.

node capture.mjsThe first command installs the package; the second installs Chromium for the Playwright version in the project. Browser binaries are version-specific, so revisit browser installation when you update Playwright.

Choose screenshot scope deliberately
- Viewport capture: omit
fullPage: trueto capture only the visible viewport. This is useful when you care about a page’s initial appearance. - Full-page capture: use
fullPage: trueto include content below the viewport. Long pages and content that appears only after scrolling can affect the result. - Comparable images: keep viewport dimensions and device scale factor fixed. A changed viewport or scale can make two otherwise similar captures look different.
The example waits for network idle, but a page with continual network activity may not reach that state before the timeout. If that happens, use a wait condition suited to the page—for example, wait for a known visible element—rather than repeatedly increasing the timeout without limit. Page content can also be dynamic, so a capture is a record of what the browser rendered at that moment.
Run the capture on a schedule
Schedule the script in the environment where it will run. The exact setup depends on your operating system or hosting arrangement; there is no single scheduler configuration that applies to every machine.

- Verify one manual run first. Confirm that the browser launches, the page loads, and both the image and metadata file appear in the output directory.
- Choose an available scheduler. Use the scheduler on your local computer or server, or the scheduled-job feature of your hosting service. Ensure the machine or service remains available at the planned run time.
- Use a modest cadence. Choose an interval that fits your monitoring purpose and the target site’s published guidance. No universal interval is established for these sites.
- Keep output organized. Store captures in a directory organized by site and date. Retain the URL and capture time alongside each image so you can identify what was recorded.
- Check scheduled-run permissions and paths. A scheduler may run with a different working directory or environment from your interactive terminal. Use a stable project path and confirm the scheduled process can write to the output directory.
Keep captures useful for comparison
Playwright notes that screenshot rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. For meaningful visual comparisons, run the baseline and later captures in the same environment, with the same browser setup and viewport. If the runtime environment changes, treat visual differences cautiously rather than assuming the site changed.
For repeatable monitoring, preserve the script and dependency versions used for the baseline. When updating Playwright, install the browser binaries that correspond to that version and consider recording the change alongside your capture archive.

What a screenshot can—and cannot—tell you
GIGW sets guidance for Indian government websites and applications across central, state, district and local levels, and cites WCAG 2.1 among the standards informing its accessibility guidance. That scope does not mean every individual site has been audited. A static screenshot can help document visible appearance, but it cannot establish that interactive controls work, that assistive technologies are supported, or that time-dependent and automatically updating content behaves accessibly.
Troubleshoot common scheduled-capture failures
- The script works manually but not on schedule: check the scheduler’s working directory, runtime environment, permissions and access to the output path. Use an absolute project path if relative paths resolve differently.
- Playwright cannot find its browser: install the browser binary for the installed Playwright version with
npx playwright install chromium, then rerun the script. - Navigation times out: the page may be slow, unavailable, or continuously active. Verify access manually, then choose a page-specific wait condition if network idle is unsuitable. Do not use retries to evade a block or denial of access.
- The saved image is blank or incomplete: check whether navigation completed and whether the intended content is below the fold. Try a full-page capture where appropriate, and wait for a relevant page element if content renders after the initial load.
- Images differ despite no apparent site change: compare the viewport, scale, browser version, operating system and headless setting. Playwright warns that these environment differences can affect rendering.
- The site blocks or denies automated access: stop the job and consult the site owner or published access guidance. Do not attempt to bypass access controls.
