YouTube Studio can schedule a livestream event, but scheduling alone will not play a prerecorded video. To broadcast one, create the event in YouTube Studio and use an encoder or cloud service to send the video as the live feed. For recurring playback, confirm that your chosen tool can repeat the video and schedule pattern you need; YouTube’s event-scheduling workflow does not provide that automation by itself.
What scheduling a YouTube livestream does—and does not do
A scheduled stream creates an upcoming event page with a start time. YouTube says scheduled streams may appear in subscribers’ feeds, where viewers can select “Notify me.” The event page is separate from the video playout: an encoder or streaming service must send the prerecorded content to YouTube as a live feed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and its live stream settings guidance.
For a one-time scheduled broadcast, you can start the encoder yourself before the event. For repeated, unattended playback, the encoder or service must also support the recurrence and looping behavior you want. Reusing an event’s settings can save setup time, but it does not by itself schedule or play future broadcasts automatically.
Before you schedule: check channel access and prepare the video
Confirm that the channel can livestream
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check access before building the event: if the channel is not eligible, scheduling and encoder setup will not make it eligible. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and requirements.

Check the content and rights
Having a video file does not establish that you have permission to broadcast its audio or video. Confirm that you own or have the necessary rights to every component, including music, clips, images, and third-party footage. YouTube’s rules and enforcement apply to livestreams as well as uploads; review the current YouTube copyright guidance before scheduling. A successful live broadcast also does not guarantee that a channel or video will qualify for monetization: reused-content eligibility is assessed separately under YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Choose playback and recurrence deliberately
Decide whether you need a single scheduled broadcast, a video that loops during a broadcast, or a series of separate events. Verify that your encoder or cloud service supports the exact recurrence pattern and unattended operation you expect. YouTube’s general scheduling instructions do not establish that any event will recur or that prerecorded content will play automatically.
How to schedule a prerecorded video as a YouTube livestream
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go live → Manage. Choose the option to schedule a stream, or reuse the settings from an earlier stream.
- Create the event. Enter its title, description, privacy setting, and scheduled date and time. Review the event details before saving. YouTube’s encoder workflow covers scheduling and connecting the broadcast.
- Copy the connection details. In the event’s stream settings, get the stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Treat the key like a password: enter it only in the encoder or service you intend to use, and avoid sharing it or exposing it in a recording or screenshot.
- Configure the encoder or service. Select the prerecorded video as the source, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key, and set the output format and quality supported by your encoder and connection. The event page does not send the video for you.
- Set the recurrence in the playback tool, if supported. Configure looping or future runs in the encoder or service itself. Confirm its current documentation for the recurrence pattern, unattended behavior, file limits, and any service terms; do not assume that scheduling one YouTube event creates a recurring series.
- Save and share the event page. Viewers can visit the upcoming event and, where available, choose “Notify me” to receive a reminder. This audience-facing event feature is distinct from the encoder’s playback schedule; see YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Connect and configure the encoder
Stream URL, key, and protocol
In the encoder’s streaming or output settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure ingestion protocol and publishes encoder settings guidance for bitrate, resolution, and related output choices. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings recommendations and the settings supported by your encoder; there is no single bitrate that suits every resolution, frame rate, codec, or connection.

Resolution, bitrate, and keyframes
Choose a resolution and frame rate that match the source video and that the encoder can deliver consistently. Set bitrate and keyframe interval according to YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected output rather than copying settings intended for a different resolution or frame rate. If your encoder exposes a keyframe interval setting, compare it with YouTube’s guidance before going live. A higher-quality target needs more upload capacity; leave headroom rather than running the connection at its full measured limit.
Audio and preview
Check that the correct audio track is selected and audible, that video is not cropped or stretched unexpectedly, and that the encoder is sending the intended file. Use YouTube’s live control room preview to inspect the incoming feed before viewers see it. Keep the encoder’s output and event timing aligned so the feed is ready when the scheduled event begins.
Test and start the broadcast on time
YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours before the stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Use that lead time to confirm that YouTube receives the feed, inspect the preview, and monitor audio and video. These timings are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder or network will be ready by then. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Make future broadcasts easier with reused settings
YouTube lets you create a new stream using the same settings as a previous one. Its reuse option copies metadata, settings, and the stream key, while allowing you to edit the new stream. This can reduce repetitive setup, but review the new event’s title, description, privacy, date, and time, and verify that the encoder is pointed at the intended event. Reusing settings is not the same as automating video playout or creating a recurring schedule. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Choose between running an encoder yourself and using cloud playback
| Approach | Who runs the video feed | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Self-managed encoder | Your computer and encoder send the video to YouTube; the computer and connection must remain available for the broadcast. | That the encoder supports your file and desired looping or schedule, and that you can monitor its connection and YouTube’s preview. |
| Cloud service | A hosted service sends the video feed, subject to that service’s current capabilities and terms. | That it supports YouTube, the required recurrence pattern, formats, quality, storage, and unattended recovery behavior. |
YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. The listing establishes that it is a relevant cloud option, not its current plans, price, availability, or support for every recurrence pattern. Check the provider’s current documentation before relying on any specific feature. YouTube’s directory is part of its encoder setup guide.

Troubleshooting scheduled prerecorded streams
The event is scheduled, but no video appears
Scheduling creates the event, not the feed. Start the configured encoder or confirm that the cloud service is scheduled and connected to the correct event. Check YouTube’s preview and the encoder’s output status.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Check that the stream URL and key match the event, that the key has not been changed, and that the encoder is using a protocol and output configuration accepted by YouTube. Re-enter the details carefully if needed, then inspect the live control room for incoming signal and stream health.

The broadcast does not repeat or start unattended
Check the playback tool’s recurrence configuration and current documentation. YouTube scheduling and reuse of settings do not configure a repeating video schedule; if the chosen encoder cannot run unattended or repeat the file as needed, use a tool that explicitly supports that behavior.
Stream health is poor or the feed stops
Check the encoder’s connection and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Ensure the upload connection has headroom for the selected bitrate, then reduce output demands if necessary and retest. Follow YouTube’s current bitrate and resolution guidance, and monitor the preview rather than relying only on a local encoder status.
