YouTube Studio lets you schedule individual live events and reuse settings from earlier streams, but its documented workflow does not provide an automatic weekly or daily recurrence rule. For a recurring online radio show, schedule each dated broadcast in Studio, or use the YouTube Live Streaming API to create a separate broadcast for every occurrence. Reuse the station’s stream when events happen at different times; plan separate streams or a deliberate multi-broadcast setup if shows overlap.

Does YouTube Live support recurring schedules?

YouTube’s documented Studio workflow schedules one event at a time. You can reuse settings from a previous stream, but that is not the same as setting a repeating calendar rule: create and review a separate scheduled event for each show. If your station needs to generate many occurrences automatically, the YouTube Live Streaming API can create distinct broadcast events programmatically.

The API distinguishes the event viewers watch from the feed sent by the station. A liveBroadcast represents an event; a liveStream represents the audio-video feed. Each broadcast is associated with a stream. A recurring series is therefore a set of separately scheduled broadcast resources, not one event that repeats forever.

Option 1: Schedule each broadcast in YouTube Studio

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live.
  2. In Live Control Room, open the Manage tab and choose Schedule stream.
  3. Choose whether to reuse settings from a previous stream or create new settings.
  4. Enter the event’s title, date and time, privacy, and other details. Check that the scheduled event page presents the correct information to listeners.
  5. Share the event page with your audience so listeners can find the show and set reminders.
  6. Repeat these steps for each date in the series. Verify the details for each occurrence even when you reuse settings.

This works well for a modest schedule, or when someone should review each event’s title, time, privacy, and public-facing page. YouTube’s documented Studio steps establish event scheduling and settings reuse; they do not establish an automatic recurring schedule.

Option 2: Generate occurrences with the YouTube Live Streaming API

For a schedule maintained by software, create a separate broadcast for each dated occurrence, then associate it with the appropriate stream. The documented single-encoder pattern is to configure one stream and encoder for shows at different times, while creating a distinct broadcast resource for every event.

  1. Configure the station’s feed as a YouTube liveStream, including the settings the encoder will use.
  2. For every occurrence, create a liveBroadcast with its own title, scheduled start time, and privacy status.
  3. Bind that broadcast to the stream intended to carry its feed.
  4. Send the feed from the encoder using the matching stream settings, then monitor the event in Live Control Room.
  5. Have the scheduling client handle API errors, including account broadcast-limit failures, and verify that each event was created and bound as intended.

An API-created start time must be in the future and within a range YouTube can reliably schedule. The cited API guidance does not establish one universal maximum scheduling horizon, so do not assume every account can schedule the same number of days or months ahead.

Behringer XENYX 802S Premium Analog 8-Input Mixer with USB Streaming Interface
  • Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
  • Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
  • Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
  • Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device

YouTube’s API guide allows a stream to be bound to up to three broadcasts. That capability should not be mistaken for the usual recurring single-encoder pattern: for events at different times, create distinct broadcasts and reuse the stream. Binding one feed to multiple simultaneous event videos is a separate design choice for cases where the same content is intentionally shown in more than one event.

Choose streams based on whether shows overlap

Station schedule Stream approach What to plan
One show at a time, with a single encoder Reuse one configured stream for the series’ separately created broadcasts. Keep each broadcast’s title, start time, privacy, and event page specific to that occurrence.
Overlapping shows with different feeds or encoder settings Use a distinct stream for each broadcast, or a stream per recurring show. Configure the encoder with the settings for the show that is going live.
One feed intentionally presented as multiple simultaneous YouTube events The API guide describes binding one stream to multiple broadcasts. Use this only when the events are meant to carry the same feed; it is not a substitute for independent feeds.

Prepare the radio encoder and audio feed

The encoder sends the actual feed to YouTube; scheduling the event does not create or supply the station’s audio. Confirm that the station’s automation or encoder can output a format YouTube accepts. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC and MP3 audio codec support. The right configuration depends on the station’s existing audio chain, automation, and whether the event also needs a visual slate or other video.

Audio-Technica AT-UMX3 USB Desktop Audio Mixer
  • Compact, feature-rich livestreaming USB audio mixer provides high-quality sound for desktop audio production
  • Plug-and-play connectivity to computer or mobile device (no special drivers required)
  • Loopback function makes it easy to mix mic and instrument inputs with background music, game sounds, or other audio input from a computer – and send the stereo mix back to the computer for streaming
  • High-performance A/D converter with resolution up to 24-bit/192 kHz provides crystal-clear output for voice and instruments
  • Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer
  • Use a compatible existing encoder where possible. New hardware is not inherently required for scheduling. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but presents that as a recommendation rather than a universal requirement.
  • Check the stream settings against the actual encoder output. Do not assume a station automation system’s output is compatible without confirming its configuration.
  • Protect the stream key. It is the credential the encoder uses to send the feed to YouTube. Treat it as sensitive and use YouTube’s reset process if it is compromised.
  • Test with representative station content. Check that audio reaches the preview, sounds as intended, and that YouTube reports healthy stream status. Monitor quality during the broadcast.

Preflight each scheduled occurrence

  • Confirm the title, date and time, privacy, and listener-facing event page.
  • Check that the intended stream is associated with the event and the encoder has the matching settings.
  • Set up the encoder event at least two hours ahead, as YouTube’s general tips advise; start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
  • Check that the preview appears in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast.
  • Test representative audio and confirm YouTube reports healthy stream status.
  • Verify that the channel or watch page is accessible, then monitor audio and video quality during the event.
  • After YouTube’s event has stopped, stop the encoder.

Copyright and channel checks for radio programming

Before scheduling a show, make sure the station has the rights needed to stream its music, recordings, performances, and other material on YouTube. Scheduling an event or using a stream key does not grant music or other content rights. Review YouTube’s current copyright rules and the terms that apply to the station’s licenses; rights for broadcast or online radio do not necessarily establish permission for a YouTube livestream.

Also check that the channel is eligible to use live streaming and that no account restriction blocks the planned event. Those checks are separate from whether the Studio event or API broadcast was created successfully.

Troubleshoot a scheduled radio broadcast

Symptom Likely area to check Next step
The show is not listed as an upcoming event The event may not have been scheduled, may have the wrong privacy, or may have been created with different details. Check the Manage tab in Live Control Room and review the occurrence’s title, date/time, and privacy.
The event exists, but no preview appears The encoder may not be sending to the stream associated with that broadcast, or its output settings may not match. Check the broadcast-to-stream association, stream key, encoder configuration, and connection; then confirm whether a preview appears.
The preview appears but there is no audio The station’s audio chain or encoder output may not be delivering audio in a format YouTube accepts. Check the source routing and confirm the encoder is sending AAC or MP3 audio; test with representative content.
The wrong show or feed appears on an event The encoder may be using another show’s stream settings, or an event may be bound to the wrong stream. For overlapping shows, verify each event’s stream association and load the correct encoder settings before going live.
The API does not create an occurrence The request may have invalid event details, a start time YouTube cannot reliably schedule, or an account broadcast-limit error. Check the API error response, required title/start time/privacy fields, future start time, and account limits; retry only after correcting the cause.
The stream key may have been exposed Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to the stream. Use YouTube’s documented reset process, then update the encoder with the replacement key.
