Set up a recurring Browserless screenshot
- Get a Browserless API token. The screenshot API requires a token. Keep it in the scheduler’s protected configuration where available; do not put a real token in a public workflow or example. Browserless’s documented authentication pattern passes the token in the request URL.
- Choose an external scheduler and recurrence. Browserless’s Zapier example uses the Schedule by Zapier trigger and an hourly schedule. Hourly is only an example configuration; choose an interval appropriate to how often the page changes and how frequently you need a capture.
- Add a webhook action. Configure a POST to Browserless’s screenshot endpoint with the token in the query string and a JSON body containing the target URL and capture options.
- Choose what happens to the image. The endpoint returns image data. Browserless’s Zapier template shows Gmail as an optional delivery step; adapt the workflow to your chosen storage or notification service, and verify that it handles the webhook’s binary response as intended.
- Run a test before enabling the recurrence. Confirm that the target loads, that the expected content is visible at capture time, and that your downstream step can store or deliver the image.

Configure the screenshot request
Browserless documents POST /screenshot with token query-parameter authentication, a JSON request, and image data in the response. PNG is the documented default; options can request JPEG or WebP. Use the request’s capture settings to match the output to the job that will consume it.
Basic full-page PNG request
Replace YOUR_TOKEN and the example page URL. Keep the token private, including in exported workflow definitions and screenshots of the setup.

Choose the capture scope
- Full page: Set full-page capture when the screenshot should include content beyond the initial viewport. Long pages with lazy-loaded content may need scrolling before capture; Browserless documents
scrollPage: truefor this purpose. - Viewport: Set the viewport dimensions and device scale factor when consistent dimensions or pixel density matter to your downstream comparison or report.
- Clip: Use clipping for a fixed rectangular region. Use element selection when the target is a particular page element rather than a coordinate-based area.
- Output type and quality: PNG is the default; the API also documents JPEG and WebP options. Set image quality where supported and relevant to the chosen output.
- HTML input: The request can capture a URL or raw HTML, depending on the job.

Wait for the right content
A scheduled run can begin before a page’s asynchronous content is ready. Browserless documents waits for events, functions, selectors, or a timeout, along with navigation controls. For an element capture, wait for the relevant selector; for a known delay, a timeout may be sufficient. Prefer a condition tied to the page content when a fixed delay would be unreliable. These controls cannot guarantee that every target finishes rendering in the same way on every run.
For pages that load images or other content only as the visitor scrolls, Browserless’s scrollPage: true option can trigger lazy loading. Combining scrolling with full-page capture may help on long pages, but the actual result depends on the target page’s behavior. See the screenshot options and BQL screenshot reference.

Decide whether REST is enough or browser interaction is needed
A scheduled REST request is a natural fit when each run consists of loading a page and capturing it with configured waits and options. If the workflow must interact with the page before capture, Browserless also documents WebSocket connections for direct CDP, Playwright, or Puppeteer access. Its examples cover Puppeteer, Playwright, and BAP connection patterns; the documentation does not establish a comparative performance or cost advantage for one approach.

Handle failed or misleading captures
- Blank or white image: The target may not have rendered before capture, or it may be blocking automation. Check navigation and wait settings, then inspect whether the page loads normally in the intended workflow.
- CAPTCHA or access-denied/403 page: Browserless identifies these, along with blank captures, as possible signs that the target is blocking automation. Its separate
/unblockAPI may be a troubleshooting route for some anti-bot scenarios; it is not a guarantee that every site can be captured. - Missing or broken elements: Check whether the content is loaded asynchronously or only after scrolling. Add an appropriate selector or other wait, and consider scrolling for lazy-loaded content.
- Image arrives but is not saved or delivered: Check the scheduler’s webhook response handling and the selected downstream action. Browserless returns image data; a workflow step must be able to pass that response to the chosen storage or delivery service.
- Request fails authentication: Confirm that the token is present in the query string and that the request is sent to the correct Browserless endpoint for your account. Do not expose the token while debugging.
