To run prerecorded videos continuously as a YouTube Live stream, schedule a live event in YouTube Studio, then connect an encoder or cloud service that sends and loops your videos. Scheduling the event creates a shareable upcoming livestream page; it does not start playback. Scheduling a regular YouTube video only publishes that upload at a chosen time—it does not create a live feed.
What you need before scheduling
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube says a person must be at least 16 to live stream. Check YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements before your planned start.
- A playback and encoding method: software on a computer, dedicated encoder hardware, or a cloud service. For continuous playback, confirm that it can loop or advance through your playlist unattended, reconnect after interruption, and support your intended runtime.
- Your prerecorded files, a stable source of upload capacity, and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Schedule the YouTube Live event and connect playback
- Choose a playback method. YouTube supports encoder software and hardware as ways to send a live feed. A local setup depends on the computer or encoder, power, and internet connection remaining available. A cloud option can remove the home-computer dependency, but check its playlist, recovery, duration, and ingest capabilities before relying on it. YouTube’s encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams; that listing does not establish its current configuration, pricing, or reliability. See YouTube’s live-streaming encoder directory.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Create and select Go live to reach Live Control Room, then choose the option to schedule a stream and enter its title, visibility, and start time. The upcoming event page can be shared and may appear to subscribers. Scheduling it does not start your encoder or select a playlist. See YouTube’s instructions for scheduling a live stream; labels can vary as Studio changes.
- Set up the encoder or cloud service. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings into the playback service. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. Configure the chosen files as a playlist or loop, and set the service to begin sending the feed at the time you need.
- Use a supported ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP traffic over TLS/SSL. General encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a bitrate that matches the resolution and frame rate you intend to send and the upload capacity available. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for its bitrate table and settings applicable to your setup.
- Preview and test the full chain. Start sending the feed before the event, check the preview in Live Control Room, and confirm that video, audio, playlist transitions, and stream health look right. YouTube recommends setting up encoders in advance and leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For example, if your stream’s total outgoing bitrate is 10 Mbps, plan for roughly 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity so that 10 Mbps is about 80% of the connection’s capacity. That is a planning calculation based on YouTube’s headroom recommendation, not a guarantee of performance. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Monitor the stream after it begins. Check Live Control Room for warnings and confirm that the encoder or service continues to send content and advance through the playlist. Have an operator or alerting method available if your chosen setup cannot recover unattended.
Settings and archive behavior to plan
RTMPS versus HLS
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended ingest option where supported. HLS is another supported ingest path, but it has specific requirements: use TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte range. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Its encoder documentation lists OBS as an encoder that can output HLS; confirm your encoder’s current settings before use. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.
Long streams and replays
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a longer uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one replay. If you need a complete archive, plan separate local recording or segmentation and verify the current YouTube handling for your event duration. YouTube also recommends checking local archives and monitoring stream quality in its live-streaming tips.
Choosing a way to keep videos playing
Compare options by the work they automate and the failure points they leave with you—not just by whether they can send a signal to YouTube.

| Option | What to verify | Main dependency |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Uploads prerecorded videos, loops them or plays a playlist, and sends the feed to YouTube. One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps. | Cloud service and its supported workflow; no home computer needs to stay on. |
| Local encoder software | Whether it can play and loop files unattended, reconnect after interruptions, and send YouTube-compatible RTMPS or HLS. | The computer, software, power, and internet connection must remain available. |
| Dedicated encoder hardware | Whether the device supports your playback and playlist workflow, reconnect behavior, and required YouTube ingest settings. | Hardware, power, network connection, and any separate playback source. |
| Other cloud or broadcast services | Playlist automation, recovery, runtime, ingest compatibility, archive options, pricing, and support. YouTube lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streams and AWS Elemental MediaLive for broadcast-grade live video processing; those directory descriptions are not a comparative endorsement or proof of suitability for every use. | The provider’s service, configuration, and terms. |
Troubleshooting common failures
The event page exists, but nothing is playing
Scheduling creates the event page, not the feed. Start the encoder or cloud playback service, confirm it has the correct stream URL and key, and check the Live Control Room preview.
YouTube does not accept the stream
Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel, the stream key and URL match the selected event, and the encoder uses a supported ingest protocol and settings. If this is your channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours.

The stream drops when the operator leaves
A local setup may stop if the computer sleeps, loses power, or loses internet connectivity. Disable sleep for the streaming machine, check power and network stability, and verify that the encoder can reconnect. If you need unattended operation, choose a service that explicitly supports continuous playback and recovery.

Video stutters or stream health reports problems
Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance for your resolution and frame rate, and check actual upload capacity. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; reduce bitrate or output settings if the connection cannot sustain the feed.

A long broadcast is missing as a single replay
YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single archive for longer 24/7 broadcasts. Use a separate recording or segmentation plan if you need to preserve the full program.
