You can schedule a YouTube Live event in YouTube Studio and send prerecorded video to it through OBS, but the schedule does not play the video for you. OBS must connect to the event and keep sending the video; for a genuinely always-on channel, the OBS computer, power and upload connection must also remain available. Set up and test the event’s start behavior before relying on it unattended.

What scheduling does—and does not do

A scheduled YouTube Live event is the broadcast page and its details: title, description, thumbnail, visibility, chat and start time. It is separate from the encoder that delivers audio and video. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. OBS, or a cloud playout service, must still send the prerecorded material to YouTube when the event is due. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection using a stream URL and stream key.

That distinction matters for an always-on channel. A scheduled event is not a playlist scheduler, and creating one does not cause YouTube Studio to play a file automatically. OBS is a local encoder: it has to be running with the source configured, and the computer and network connection have to work for as long as you want the feed to continue.

Prepare the YouTube event and OBS source

1. Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Choose the option to schedule a broadcast.
  2. Enter the event’s title and description, select visibility, add a thumbnail if desired, and set the date and start time. Review the event’s settings before saving.
  3. Open the event’s stream settings and locate the encoder connection details. You will need the YouTube stream URL and the stream key to connect OBS to this broadcast.

Labels and layouts in Studio can change. Use the current Live Control Room rather than relying on old screenshots or a fixed legacy menu path. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not include it in screenshots, public notes or recordings.

2. Add the prerecorded file or playlist in OBS

  1. In OBS, create or select the scene you intend to stream.
  2. Add the prerecorded file as a media source, or configure the source or sources needed for your playlist. Check that the intended audio and video are present in the OBS preview.
  3. Set the source’s end-of-file behavior deliberately. A single file that reaches its end may stop playing; continuous programming needs an appropriate loop or playlist/restart setup. Test the exact file and scene rather than assuming a source will repeat unattended.

OBS controls the local playout, while YouTube controls the event page and broadcast. Decide whether your program is a repeating file or a playlist and verify what happens at each file boundary before depending on it around the clock.

3. Connect OBS to the scheduled event

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
  2. Choose YouTube as the service if the available integration supports the event you created. Otherwise, use the custom server option and enter the stream URL and key shown for that event in YouTube Studio.
  3. Apply the settings, then confirm OBS is connected to the intended event—not another scheduled broadcast or a different channel.

Exact service options may vary by OBS version and account setup. Follow the stream details presented for the specific event in Studio; never substitute a guessed URL or reuse a key without confirming where it points.

Start the stream and verify YouTube goes live

Two states are involved: OBS can be sending data while the YouTube broadcast is not yet public and live. YouTube event settings determine whether receiving encoder data starts the broadcast automatically or whether a separate go-live action is required. OBS documentation and community guidance also distinguish sending stream data from making the broadcast live; the forum guide’s interface details may age, so treat current YouTube Studio controls as authoritative. • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
  1. For a first run, set the event to unlisted or private and connect OBS before the intended start time.
  2. Check the Live Control Room for incoming video, stream health and the broadcast’s live state.
  3. If the encoder is sending but the event has not gone live, check the event’s auto-start and manual-start behavior in Studio. Take the required go-live action rather than assuming OBS’s start button changes YouTube’s event state.
  4. Watch playback on YouTube, including audio, picture, the beginning and end of the file, and any transition to the next item. Confirm the audience-facing event behaves as intended before using a public scheduled event.

Do not treat the event’s scheduled time as proof that playout will begin: the encoder still needs to be connected and the event’s start behavior must be configured and tested.

What an always-on OBS setup requires

For around-the-clock programming, the practical setup is a continuous encoder feed paired with a YouTube broadcast resource. Google’s API documentation treats streams and broadcast events as separate resources: a stream contains transmission settings, while broadcasts represent events. The API model allows a stream configuration to be reused for events at different times, separate streams for concurrent programs with different settings, and an additional broadcast from the same incoming feed while a 24/7 broadcast is running. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API guide

  • Computer: The machine running OBS must stay powered on and usable for the whole run.
  • OBS process: OBS must remain open, the correct scene and media source must stay active, and the source must continue or restart as intended.
  • Upload connection: The local network and internet upload must remain available to deliver the feed.
  • Correct event and key: OBS must send to the intended YouTube stream, and the event must be configured to transition to live as you expect.
  • Recovery plan: Decide how you will notice and respond to a stopped file, OBS crash, lost connection or YouTube stream interruption. Test reconnect behavior instead of assuming it is automatic.

A dedicated computer such as a mini PC is one possible host for a local OBS setup, but the sources cited here do not establish a suitable model, minimum specification or tested device. The important trade-off is that local control leaves computer uptime and network availability in your delivery chain.

Consideration OBS on your computer Cloud playout
Local computer Must remain powered on and OBS must remain usable for the stream’s duration. A local computer does not need to stay online for cloud-hosted playout; confirm the provider’s actual operating model.
Start time and repeat behavior You manage the OBS source, file or playlist and event start behavior. Check the provider’s scheduling, looping and playlist controls and how they connect to your YouTube event.
Failures and reconnects You are responsible for monitoring the local encoder and connection; test recovery behavior. Recovery varies by provider. Verify what happens if YouTube or the provider loses the stream.
YouTube event control You schedule and manage the event in YouTube Studio and connect OBS using its stream details. You still need to understand and manage the YouTube event; confirm which actions the service handles.
Setup and cost Uses your own computer and upload connection; time and power costs depend on your setup. Terms and prices depend on the service and plan. Check current provider terms rather than assuming a universal price.

Troubleshooting common failures

OBS is sending, but the YouTube event is not live

Check the event’s auto-start setting and whether YouTube requires a separate go-live action. Confirm that OBS is connected to the stream settings for the scheduled event you intend to use.

The event is live, but the video stops at the end of a file

Check the media source’s end-of-file and loop behavior, plus playlist transitions. Reproduce the file ending during a private or unlisted test and confirm the next item starts.

The wrong event receives the video

Recheck the event selected in YouTube Studio and the URL/key configured in OBS. Update OBS with the correct event’s encoder settings; keep the key private.

The stream drops or playback becomes unavailable

Check whether the computer is still powered, OBS is still running, the upload connection is available and the event remains active. Test the reconnection and restart steps you would use after a disconnect; do not assume an unattended local setup will recover by itself.

The setup works in a test but not unattended

Run a longer unlisted or private test that covers the scheduled start, file boundary, loop or playlist transition, and a deliberate reconnect. Monitor both OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room so you can identify whether a failure is in local playout, encoder delivery or the event state.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Before scheduling a public stream, confirm you have the rights needed to stream every video and audio track. A prerecorded format does not remove copyright obligations. Also assess whether the channel and programming meet YouTube’s policies for monetization and reused content; a technically successful broadcast does not itself establish eligibility. Use YouTube’s current policy guidance for decisions about specific material, and test privately when checking the workflow.

For a local OBS setup, use a YouTube event’s encoder information and your tested OBS scene/source configuration. If uninterrupted prerecorded playout without a local machine is more important than running the encoder yourself, StreamNeo offers cloud looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream and a free first day without a card. Try StreamNeo.
