To schedule an overnight radio show on a 24/7 YouTube channel, create the upcoming live event in YouTube Studio, then separately arrange for an encoder or playout service to send the show’s audio and video at the scheduled time. Scheduling creates the event and watch page; it does not play the show or keep the channel’s live feed running.
What you need before scheduling
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover eligibility and setup.
- A program feed: for example, a computer running encoder and playout software, standalone hardware encoding, or a cloud playout service.
- The correct event’s stream URL and stream key, and a plan for who or what will start, monitor, and recover the feed overnight.
- Rights to all music and other third-party material in the live show and any replay you intend to make available.
Schedule the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Open the Manage tab and select Schedule stream. You can create a new event or reuse settings from a previous stream.
- Enter the show title, scheduled start time, and visibility. Check the date and time zone carefully, especially for an overnight program that crosses midnight.
- Save the event. Share its upcoming watch-page link if listeners should be able to find it in advance and opt into notifications. YouTube’s encoder workflow explains scheduling; its live-stream settings guide covers notifications and related settings.
- In the event’s stream settings, note the stream URL and stream key. Use the key associated with this event in your encoder or playout system; do not share it publicly.
Send the overnight show to the scheduled event
The scheduled broadcast and the incoming program feed are separate parts of the process. YouTube’s live-streaming API describes a broadcast as distinct from the stream that carries audio and video. Your playout system must therefore start and sustain the actual feed; creating an event alone will not put the radio show on air. Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams also describes a continuous 24/7 feed alongside a separate broadcast for an interview.
- Choose what will generate and send the show: local encoder/playout software, a standalone hardware encoder, or cloud playout. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoder categories; its encoder directory also surfaces cloud streaming services. No single approach is right for every station.
- Configure the chosen system with the scheduled event’s stream URL and stream key. Select the correct audio/video inputs or playlist and confirm that the overnight program is cued to start at the intended time.
- Start sending the feed early enough to check it. In YouTube’s documented scheduled workflow, wait for the preview to appear, verify the correct event and program, then select Go live—unless auto-start is enabled for the stream.
- Check the public watch page, visibility, audio, and video. Confirm that the feed is playing the intended show and that the station’s schedule matches the event time.
- Arrange overnight monitoring or a recovery process. This is operational planning, not a reliability guarantee from YouTube or any service. If the feed stops, the event may remain scheduled or live while no usable program reaches viewers.
YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls; confirm their state for the event rather than assuming the encoder will automatically make the broadcast public. YouTube’s live-stream settings guide describes these options.

Choose how to run the playout overnight
Compare the operating requirements, not just the initial setup. YouTube recognizes software and standalone hardware encoders, and its directory includes cloud streaming services. The appropriate choice depends on the station’s existing equipment, staffing, schedule, and need for unattended operation.

| Approach | Useful when | Check before relying on it overnight |
|---|---|---|
| Local computer with encoder and playout software | You already have a computer and can keep it running. | Power and internet continuity, unattended playback, restart behavior, monitoring, and audio/video setup. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | You want a dedicated physical encoder. | Supported inputs and outputs, unattended operation, stream-key setup, monitoring, and budget. YouTube supports this category; that alone does not establish that a particular model fits your station. |
| Cloud playout or streaming service | You need remote, unattended playback or scheduled prerecorded programming. | File and playlist support, schedule controls, recovery and monitoring, storage, and current service terms. Verify vendor capabilities and terms before choosing. |
A physical encoder is not required: YouTube documents software encoders as well as standalone hardware. See YouTube’s encoder options.
Plan the continuous channel and separate programs
If the station wants a persistent 24/7 feed as well as individually discoverable programs—such as interviews—those can be handled as a continuous feed plus distinct scheduled broadcasts. Google’s API documentation explicitly describes a 24/7 channel feed with a separate broadcast for an interview. Decide whether listeners should watch one uninterrupted station page, separate event pages, or both, and schedule accordingly. The API documentation explains the broadcast/feed distinction.

Protect the archive and replay
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours; it warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, divide programming into shorter broadcast segments and keep a local recording as a backup rather than relying on one archive for a 24/7 feed. Very long streams can also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind, so do not promise viewers unlimited rewind through a continuous broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guide covers archiving, and its live-stream settings guide covers DVR settings and limits.
Clear music and third-party content rights
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. If it identifies such material, it may show a placeholder and warn the streamer; if the content remains, the live stream can be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also result in termination. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams describes these risks.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Having a license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add a licensed channel to its Content ID allowlist. Its livestream terms also require creators to hold necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Before broadcasting, check permissions for the particular tracks and recordings, compositions, territories, live transmission, and any archived or replay use. Requirements depend on the rights and jurisdiction involved; this guide does not determine what a specific station must obtain. Read YouTube’s live copyright guidance and linked livestream terms.
Troubleshoot common overnight scheduling problems
- The event exists, but viewers see no show: Scheduling creates the broadcast event, not the feed. Start the encoder or playout system with the event’s stream URL and key, then complete the Go live step if auto-start is not enabled.
- The encoder is sending, but the scheduled event has no preview: Check that the encoder is using the correct event’s stream URL and key, and confirm that its output is reaching YouTube. Do not assume a previously saved key belongs to the current event.
- The feed appears, but the event does not go public: Check the event’s auto-start setting. In the documented workflow, the operator waits for preview and selects Go live unless auto-start is enabled.
- The wrong show airs or starts at the wrong time: Verify the event date, time zone, playlist order, and scheduled cue in the playout system. YouTube’s event schedule and the playout schedule are separate.
- The stream is interrupted after music plays: Review YouTube’s copyright notice and check that the station has rights for the specific content and intended use. If licensed material is being matched, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; a license alone may not stop automated interruption.
- The overnight stream has no usable replay: A broadcast over 12 hours may not be captured, and long streams may have limited DVR. Use shorter segments and retain a local recording when replay is important.
