To show different prerecorded videos at set times on a 24/7 YouTube channel, schedule a YouTube Live event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder or cloud service that can switch files on a timetable. YouTube Studio schedules the event; it does not itself rotate a playlist of video files. The encoder or service must keep sending the feed, and you must plan for stream restarts and archive handling rather than assuming one event will run and archive indefinitely.
What you need for scheduled video changes
Think of the setup as two separate jobs: YouTube creates and hosts the live event, while an encoder supplies the video feed. The encoder or service also needs to handle playlist order and time-based transitions.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream.
- One or more prerecorded video files and a schedule defining when each should play.
- An encoder or streaming service that accepts those files and supports timed playlist changes.
- A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
- A plan for continuous operation, monitoring, recovery, and stream restarts.
YouTube’s help pages explain scheduling a stream and connecting an encoder, but do not document timed switching among prerecorded files. Confirm that the encoder or service you choose supports the exact playlist and scheduling behavior you need.

YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s Get started with live streaming help before building your schedule, since platform requirements can change.

Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open Manage, then schedule a stream. Set its title, visibility, and other event details.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. The URL is the destination for the encoder; the key identifies the stream. Keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
Scheduling gives viewers an upcoming event to find and lets them opt into reminders. It does not control which prerecorded video is playing at a given time. For details on the event settings and stream key, see YouTube’s Manage live stream settings help.
Configure the encoder and timed playlist
Set up a software encoder
- Choose software that can play your video files as a playlist and change items according to your time-based schedule. Check this capability before relying on it for a 24/7 channel; timed rotation is not a function provided by YouTube Studio.
- In the encoder’s stream settings, enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Prefer RTMPS, which YouTube recommends, if the encoder supports it.
- Choose the video and audio settings to match your source files, the encoder, and the upload connection. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide covers codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio, bitrate, and resolution. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers on different devices and network conditions.
- Load the files in the intended order and configure the timed transitions in the encoder. Check whether times mean local time or another time zone, what happens when a file ends early or runs long, and whether the playlist repeats outside scheduled changeovers.
- Start sending the feed and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the correct video and audio are present, then start the event as appropriate for its scheduled setup.
Use hardware or cloud encoding when it fits
YouTube supports hardware encoders and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. A hardware encoder is optional, not a general requirement for playing prerecorded video. Before buying one, verify that it supports your input format, YouTube’s ingestion protocol, and the playlist scheduling behavior you require.

A cloud live encoding service can keep the feed running without relying on a computer at home, but its playlist automation, recovery behavior, and costs depend on the provider. YouTube’s encoder list includes third-party options such as AWS Elemental MediaLive; inclusion on that list does not establish that a service supports your specific timed rotation workflow. Confirm the feature set and operating costs directly with the provider.
Choose an ingestion protocol and quality
For a typical scheduled video feed, use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. HLS is another YouTube ingestion option for certain codec and HDR needs, but YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP. HLS also has specific requirements, including TS segments, a rolling playlist, and segment durations between 1 and 4 seconds. A scheduled playlist by itself is not a reason to choose HLS. Check YouTube’s HLS setup guidance and your encoder’s documentation before selecting it.

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guide for the exact recommended values for your resolution and frame rate. Match the settings to the upload connection available to the encoder, and test under operating conditions. There is no universal bitrate or resolution that is right for every source, connection, and encoder.
Plan for 24/7 operation and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not mean a single 24/7 event will be archived indefinitely, and the cited help page does not describe a method to extend or bypass the archive condition. Plan how your encoder or service will handle stream restarts and how you will manage recordings; recheck YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive.

A continuous channel also needs operational safeguards beyond the playlist itself. Decide who will respond to failures, how the feed will restart, what backup content or source is available, and how audio and video will be monitored. The exact approach depends on the encoder or service.
Test before relying on the schedule
- Run a test with representative files and the intended playlist schedule before the channel depends on it.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, audio, and the correct event.
- Confirm that each scheduled change occurs when expected, including around a file ending or a playlist repeat.
- Check that viewers can access the event at the intended visibility setting.
- Verify that alerts, restart behavior, and backup content work as planned.
YouTube recommends testing before an event, checking the preview, monitoring audio and video quality, and verifying accessibility. See its encoder setup guidance for practical checks.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube shows no incoming feed: Confirm the encoder is sending to the correct stream URL and that the stream key matches the scheduled event. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- The event is live but the wrong video is playing: Check the encoder’s playlist order, time zone, and transition rules. YouTube Studio does not select the prerecorded files.
- A change happens at the wrong time: Check whether the schedule uses local time or a configured time zone, and verify the encoder’s behavior when files finish earlier or later than expected.
- Viewers report buffering or poor quality: Check the encoder’s bitrate and resolution against YouTube’s current guidance and the available upload connection. Test at the selected settings rather than assuming the source file’s quality guarantees a stable feed.
- The stream ends or the archive is missing: Review the encoder or service’s restart behavior and your archive plan. YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not an assumed uninterrupted 24/7 archive.
- HLS will not connect: Verify that the encoder supports YouTube’s HLS requirements, including TS segments, a rolling playlist, and the specified segment duration range. If your use case does not need HLS, consider RTMPS instead.
