You can broadcast a rotating sequence of prerecorded videos around the clock from a DigitalOcean Droplet, but not by scheduling an ordinary YouTube playlist. Create or schedule a YouTube Live stream, then run an encoder on the Droplet to send that live event a continuous video feed using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes the encoder’s role: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.”
What you are scheduling: a live event, not a YouTube playlist
A YouTube playlist normally links uploaded videos for on-demand viewing. It does not turn those videos into one continuous live broadcast. For a 24/7 channel, YouTube Live is the destination, while an encoder or streaming service chooses and sends the prerecorded video sequence as a live feed.
This guide covers a self-managed setup: a DigitalOcean Droplet runs media-sequencing and encoding software such as FFmpeg, then pushes the feed to YouTube Live. YouTube’s encoder help also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuously streaming prerecorded videos. That listing alone does not establish YouTube endorsement, current pricing, or comparative performance.
Before you begin
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it well before your intended start.
- A DigitalOcean account and a Droplet configured for your media workload. The required CPU, memory, disk, and network capacity depend on your chosen encoding settings and video files; there is no established universal Droplet size for this job.
- The video files you have rights to stream, arranged in the intended order, plus software that can sequence them and provide a continuous real-time feed.
- A plan for the stream key, process restarts, monitoring, and outbound bandwidth costs. A Droplet is a server to administer, not a managed guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
1. Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a live stream or schedule one for the channel. Scheduling can make an upcoming event visible to subscribers and allow reminders.
- In the event’s stream settings, obtain the stream URL and stream key. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it; YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL.
- Keep the stream key secret. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public command, screenshot, repository, or shared log. Enter it only in the encoder’s protected configuration.
- Leave the event available for the encoder connection, and use the Live Control Room preview to confirm the incoming feed before making the stream public or starting the event as intended.
Labels in YouTube Studio can change. Confirm that the stream URL and key belong to the event you mean to run; a valid key for a different event will not send video to the intended destination.

2. Prepare and order the video files
Make the sequence explicit
Put the files in a deliberate order and configure the media software to play that sequence continuously. Do not assume that sorting a folder or making a YouTube playlist defines the encoder’s play order. Document the sequence so you can change or restore it without guessing after a restart.
Check compatibility and transitions
FFmpeg provides both a concat filter and a concat demuxer. In suitable cases, the demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding; the filter offers a route when inputs need processing to match. The appropriate method depends on the actual files. Differences in codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, or container can prevent a clean join or require normalization. Test the full set, especially transitions and audio, before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

The documented concat functionality is not, by itself, a complete production recipe for an indefinitely looping YouTube stream. Do not assume arbitrary mixed-format files will join seamlessly. Configure the chosen software to produce a continuous real-time feed, and verify that the output stays compatible with YouTube’s current encoder requirements.
3. Configure the Droplet and encoder
Choose capacity for the actual workload
DigitalOcean Droplet configurations determine CPU, RAM, disk, and network resources. Encoding can be CPU-intensive; simply reading already encoded files and passing them through may have a different load from converting them. Resolution, codec, bitrate, file handling, and other services running on the Droplet all affect the resources required. Start from the workload you intend to run and test it rather than treating a provider’s maximum network figure as a sizing recommendation.

DigitalOcean documents maximum network throughput of 2 Gbps for standard non-GPU Droplets and 10 Gbps for Premium CPU Droplets (limits last verified 19 August 2026). These are platform ceilings, not a promise of sustained end-to-end throughput or evidence that either configuration is appropriate for a particular stream.
Match YouTube’s encoder guidance
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and specifies supported codecs and settings. Follow the current settings for the codec you select. YouTube recommends a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations; check that your encoder is actually applying the selected values.

Enter the event’s RTMPS URL and stream key in the encoder configuration. Avoid exposing the key in process arguments or logs where possible; restrict access to configuration files and rotate the key in YouTube if it is disclosed.

4. Estimate outbound bandwidth and cost
A continuous live feed uses outbound transfer for as long as it runs. As a rough planning calculation, data per month in decimal gigabytes is approximately bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8,000. For a 30-day month at a steady bitrate, that is bitrate × 324; for example, a bitrate of 4 Mbps corresponds to roughly 1,296 decimal GB over 30 days. This is a mathematical estimate, not a DigitalOcean bill; protocol overhead, runtime, and the provider’s GiB accounting affect the actual billed amount.

DigitalOcean says each plan contributes outbound transfer to an allowance pooled across the team, inbound transfer is free, and additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB (billing terms last verified 14 September 2026). Check the current total team allowance and your account’s remaining transfer before deployment. Any overage depends on the team’s pooled allowance and actual billable transfer, so do not treat the calculation above as a price quote.

- Prepare the encoder and start sending video ahead of the intended public start. YouTube advises setting up in advance rather than discovering configuration problems at showtime.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the right event receives the feed, picture and audio are present, and transitions between the actual files work.
- Verify the encoder’s outbound connection and available bandwidth under the expected workload. Watch for dropped frames, audio problems, or resource pressure on the Droplet.
- Confirm the sequence reaches its end and begins again as intended. Test what happens when a file is missing, the encoder exits, or the network connection drops.
- Set up monitoring and an alert path that someone will actually see. Decide how the encoder will be restarted, who can access the server and stream key, and how you will recover if YouTube or the Droplet disconnects.
YouTube advises ongoing monitoring of audio and video quality. A successful preview is not proof of 24/7 uptime: no particular Droplet size or uninterrupted-service result is established here.

Troubleshooting common failures
YouTube does not show an incoming signal
- Check that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the correct Live Control Room event.
- Confirm RTMPS is configured correctly and the Droplet can make outbound connections.
- If live streaming was only just enabled for the channel, allow for YouTube’s stated first-time activation window of up to 24 hours.
The feed starts but video or audio breaks at a join
- Test the two files around the transition outside the live event. Compare their codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio properties.
- Use a concat method appropriate to the inputs; normalize incompatible files with the selected media software when needed.
- Inspect the resulting output and encoder logs rather than assuming that a successful start means every later transition will work.
The stream drops or the Droplet struggles
- Check CPU, memory, disk availability, outbound throughput, and encoder logs while the sequence is running.
- Determine whether the workload is re-encoding or simply passing through the files; adjust the configuration or Droplet resources based on observed demand.
- Implement and test a restart and alerting plan. Neither DigitalOcean’s network ceilings nor YouTube’s encoder guidance guarantees automatic recovery for your deployment.
The stream appears healthy locally but not in YouTube preview
- Recheck the event-specific URL and key, selected protocol, and current YouTube encoder settings.
- Allow the encoder time to connect, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and status rather than relying only on a running process.
