Install Puppeteer and its browser
On the target host, create or enter your Node.js project and install Puppeteer:
npm install puppeteerThe standard puppeteer package ordinarily downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing during installation. If your package manager blocks install scripts, that download may not happen. Allow the install script or install the required browser with Puppeteer’s browser-install command. Use puppeteer-core instead only when your project intentionally supplies and manages its own browser. See the Puppeteer installation guide.
Create the screenshot script
Save this as screenshot.mjs in your project. It reads the page URL from an environment variable, waits for a navigation condition, captures the full page and closes Chrome even if capture fails.

}Puppeteer’s screenshot guide uses Page.screenshot() to save an image to a path: Puppeteer Screenshots. Create the screenshots directory before running the script, or add directory creation to the script; otherwise saving the file can fail. The filename uses the current UTC date because toISOString() returns UTC, which may differ from the local date used by cron.
Choose the capture area
The example sets a 1440-by-1000 viewport and uses fullPage: true to capture the page’s full length. For a fixed-size viewport screenshot, omit fullPage. To capture just a region, use the clip option instead. These are different capture choices; see the ScreenshotOptions API.

Choose when the page is ready
networkidle2 waits for a period with no more than two network connections, but it is not appropriate for every site. Pages with persistent network activity may never satisfy that condition. For such pages, wait for a specific selector or another condition that indicates the content you need is ready, and set a timeout appropriate to the site. If the page requires authentication, configure access in the script rather than assuming the scheduled browser session is already logged in.
Schedule the script to run daily
Open the relevant user’s crontab with crontab -e and add a line such as this for 03:15 in the cron daemon’s timezone:

The five fields at the start are minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week; the command runs under the owner of that crontab. The explicit cd supports scripts that depend on the project directory, the absolute Node path avoids relying on cron’s PATH, and the final redirection appends standard output and errors to a log file.
Confirm timezone and missed-run behavior
The example means 03:15 according to the cron daemon’s configured timezone, not necessarily UTC or your workstation’s timezone. Check the installed cron implementation’s manual and the host’s timezone before choosing a time. Daylight-saving changes can skip a nominal wall-clock time during a spring-forward gap or run an ambiguous time twice when clocks move back. If you need exactly one run per UTC day or recovery after downtime, a basic cron entry may not provide those semantics; use a scheduler with the required timezone and persistence behavior, or make the job idempotent and monitor it. Check the host’s browser and security setup
Keep Chrome’s sandbox enabled wherever the deployment permits it. Puppeteer strongly discourages launching Chrome with --no-sandbox; disabling it should not be the default response to a launch error. Investigate the host’s sandbox configuration and platform requirements first. The Puppeteer troubleshooting guide also documents hosting-specific setup; for example, its Google Cloud Run notes explain that the default Node.js runtime lacks system packages required by Headless Chrome and needs a suitable image setup.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Chrome or browser executable is missing: Check whether package-manager policy prevented Puppeteer’s install script from downloading Chrome. Allow the script or install the compatible browser explicitly. If using
puppeteer-core, confirm that the browser you provide is installed and configured. - The script works in a terminal but not from cron: Check the absolute Node and project paths, the URL environment variable, permissions, and the redirected log. Cron does not necessarily load your interactive shell profile, so do not rely on its aliases, shell initialization, or
PATH. - The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or too small: Confirm the page reached the state you need, whether it needs authentication or a selector-specific wait, and whether you meant to capture the viewport, full page, or a clip.
- Chrome reports a sandbox error: Check host configuration and platform dependencies. Avoid treating
--no-sandboxas a routine fix; Puppeteer strongly discourages it. - A cloud deployment cannot launch Chrome: Check the platform-specific Puppeteer guidance and required system packages. A browser that runs on a developer machine may not run in a minimal cloud image without the necessary dependencies.
- The same day’s filename is overwritten: The sample names files by UTC date, so repeated runs in one UTC day replace the same path. Include a timestamp in the filename if you need to preserve multiple captures per day.
When cron is the right scheduler
Cron is a practical choice when you manage an always-on host and can install Node.js and Chrome, write screenshots to its filesystem or upload them elsewhere, and inspect logs or monitor failures. Before relying on it, decide how timezone changes and missed runs should work. A hosted scheduler or browser environment may be preferable when you do not manage a persistent machine, but compare its timezone and retry behavior, browser installation requirements, screenshot storage access, monitoring, and ongoing cost. These are deployment trade-offs; no particular paid service is required for the local cron approach.

Frequently asked questions
Which user’s crontab should contain the job?
Use the crontab for the account that should own and run the process; cron executes the command as that crontab’s owner. Make sure that account can read the project and write the screenshot and log files.
Can the script save screenshots somewhere other than the local disk?
The example writes to the host filesystem. If you need remote storage, add an upload step or use a capture workflow that supports the storage destination you require; the basic cron entry does not upload files.
