Use a browser automation script to capture the product page, then use a scheduler to run that script once a day. Playwright can save a viewport, full-page, or selected-element screenshot; GitHub Actions can schedule a workflow, while Amazon CloudWatch Synthetics offers managed scheduled canaries. The example below uses Playwright and GitHub Actions, with the schedule set to 9:00 a.m. India Standard Time (IST).
What you need to decide first
A scheduler starts the job; browser automation visits the page and captures it. Before configuring either, settle what the image should show and where the files should go.
- Capture scope: a viewport image records what is visible without scrolling; a full-page image covers the scrollable page; an element screenshot focuses on a chosen page element, such as a price panel.
- Browser conditions: keep the viewport, capture scope, and other relevant browser settings consistent if you plan to compare images across days.
- Output and retention: choose a date-based filename and a storage location, then decide how long to retain the images. A scheduler does not itself define an archive policy.
- Access: check the retailer’s current terms and technical restrictions before repeatedly visiting its page. The retailer is not specified here, so permission for any particular site or use cannot be assumed.
Capture the page with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in a project, then save the following as capture.mjs. Set PRODUCT_URL to the exact product page you are permitted to access. This example captures the full scrollable page and writes a PNG named with the current UTC date.

Playwright documents saving screenshots to a file, returning image bytes, full-page capture, and screenshots of selected elements. Its description of a full-page screenshot is “a screenshot of a full scrollable page, as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely.” See the Playwright screenshot documentation.
Choose the right capture mode
- Viewport: omit
fullPage: trueto capture only the current viewport. - Full page: keep
fullPage: true. Long pages can produce large images, and page content that loads only after scrolling may need separate handling. - One element: locate a stable CSS selector and call
locator('YOUR_SELECTOR').screenshot({ path: 'element.png' }). Replace the selector with one that matches the intended element on the retailer’s current page; selectors can change when a site redesigns.
Wait for the content you actually need
The example waits for the initial DOM content, not for a particular price or inventory state. Ecommerce pages may populate product details later or render them through client-side scripts. If a stable selector exists, wait for it before taking the screenshot:

There is no universal wait condition for every ecommerce site; a fixed delay can be too short on a slow page and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
Run it every day with GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions can trigger a workflow on a cron schedule. By default, scheduled workflows run in UTC; the schedule event also supports an IANA timezone. This workflow uses Asia/Kolkata for 9:00 a.m. IST daily. Create .github/workflows/daily-screenshot.yml:

retention-days: 30Commit the workflow and add a repository secret named PRODUCT_URL containing the permitted product URL. workflow_dispatch allows a manual run from the repository’s Actions interface, useful for checking the setup before relying on the schedule. The artifact setting retains each uploaded run’s screenshot for 30 days; adjust it to fit your needs and current platform limits. Artifact retention is not a permanent archive.
GitHub warns that scheduled runs can be delayed during periods of high load, particularly near the start of an hour, and queued runs may be dropped under sufficiently high load. A scheduled workflow is suitable when a daily capture is enough and some timing variation is acceptable. If a capture must happen at an exact time, account for that limitation when choosing a scheduler. Consult GitHub’s current schedule event documentation for syntax and behavior.

Consider a managed scheduled canary on AWS
If you already use AWS and want a managed monitoring service rather than maintaining a scheduled workflow, CloudWatch Synthetics can run scheduled canaries. AWS documents browser automation support in Node.js and Python runtimes, scheduling with cron or rate expressions, and screenshot storage. Its sample code demonstrates navigating to a page and saving a screenshot. See the CloudWatch Synthetics documentation.
CloudWatch Synthetics and GitHub Actions differ in operational model: one is a managed canary service, while the other runs a workflow you configure. The cited documentation does not establish an equivalent service-level guarantee or a cost comparison, so evaluate current AWS pricing, configuration, monitoring needs, storage, and timing requirements before choosing. Neither option removes the need to verify that the target site permits your recurring visits.

Troubleshooting a daily capture
- No image is created: run the script locally and check that
PRODUCT_URLis set and the workflow secret name matches. Confirm the job reaches the screenshot step. - The screenshot misses product details: wait for a selector tied to the needed content rather than relying only on initial navigation. Check whether the selector still matches the current page.
- The output is blank or incomplete: verify the URL opens in the workflow’s browser environment and inspect the page’s load behavior. A site may block automation or require a session; do not bypass access controls.
- The workflow did not run at the expected time: confirm the cron expression and timezone, then check the Actions run history. Scheduled GitHub workflows can be delayed or dropped under load.
- Images are missing from long pages: full-page capture determines the screenshot area, but content loaded on scroll may require an approach tailored to that page. Test several runs before depending on the image.
- Storage fills or images disappear: review artifact retention and download or copy files to an appropriate archive if you need longer retention. The schedule itself does not guarantee permanent storage.
Frequently asked questions
Can I capture a product price rather than the whole page?
Yes. Use Playwright’s element screenshot with a locator that identifies the price area, and wait for that locator to become visible before capturing.
Does a daily screenshot prove the price or stock was available to every shopper?
No. It records what the automated browser rendered at capture time under its specific conditions. It does not establish availability for other users, locations, accounts, or later moments.
Can I schedule at a different Indian local time?
Yes. Change the cron hour and minute to the desired time and retain the Asia/Kolkata timezone. Check GitHub’s current schedule documentation when editing the workflow syntax.
