To schedule automatic website screenshots, either create a recurring schedule in a screenshot service that supports one, or use an external scheduler—such as cron, a CI workflow, or a cloud timer—to call a screenshot API on a cadence you choose. Configure the page and capture settings, verify a first result, then decide how to store captures and handle failures.
Choose where the schedule should live
There are two main designs. A provider-native schedule keeps timing and capture management within the screenshot service. An external scheduler triggers a capture API, separating the timing system from the rendering service. A cloud browser-rendering endpoint can also be the capture component, with a separate scheduler supplying recurring triggers where needed.
| Approach | Good fit when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Native recurring schedule | You want fewer components to operate and the provider offers the schedule and management features you need. | Schedule controls, run history, stored-image retention, change detection, alerts, quotas, and how pausing or deleting a schedule affects saved results. These capabilities vary by provider. |
| External scheduler | Your team already uses cron, CI, a cloud timer, or an automation workflow, or needs timing controlled outside the screenshot service. | Integration effort, deploy-trigger support, run logs, retry behavior, duplicate-run handling, result storage, and failure notifications. |
| Cloud browser rendering plus a scheduler | You want a cloud browser to render a page before capturing it, while a separate service controls when captures run. | Rendering endpoint behavior, authentication, quotas, and the scheduler’s cadence and limits. |
Cloudflare describes its Browser Run screenshot endpoint this way: “The /screenshot endpoint renders the webpage by processing its HTML and JavaScript, then captures a screenshot of the fully rendered page.” That describes its rendering step, not a recurring schedule.
Plan the capture before scheduling it
Set the capture requirements first so a recurring job produces comparable, useful results rather than merely a growing folder of images.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Pages: list the URLs and decide whether every page needs the same settings.
- Format and dimensions: choose an output format and viewport appropriate to the comparison or record you need. If supported, decide whether to capture the full page or only the visible viewport.
- Variants: count separate viewport sizes, device settings, or other capture variants as distinct renders when estimating workload.
- Cadence: match the interval to how quickly the target changes and how soon you need to notice a change.
- Results: select a destination and retention policy. Do not assume that deleting a schedule also deletes, or preserves, its existing images; that behavior is provider-specific.
- Operations: decide who receives failure notifications and whether missed runs should be retried.
Estimate capture volume and choose a cadence
Estimate the number of expected renders for a period with this planning formula:
URLs × captures per URL in the period × viewport variants
For example, 12 URLs captured once a day at two viewport sizes would require 24 renders per day before any retries. If the service charges per render, include retries and extra variants in the quota estimate. Billing units differ by provider, so check the current plan limits and billing rules rather than treating the estimate as a universal pricing formula.

Hourly, six-hourly, daily, and weekly intervals appear in provider documentation as examples; they are not a guarantee that every service supports those intervals. ScreenshotEngine documents daily and weekly refreshes. AWS EventBridge Scheduler documents recurring rate and cron expressions. Check the selected service’s current schedule limits, quotas, and billing before raising capture frequency.

This example runs a daily screenshot through the ScreenshotNeo API, saves each response to a dated file, and appends output to a log. It uses a shell script so the capture command and file handling remain reproducible outside the crontab entry.
1. Set up the script and API key
Save this as capture-site.sh, replacing the example target URL with the page you want to capture. The API key is read from the environment rather than written into the script.

This example requests a run at 06:15 according to the cron environment’s local time zone. Cron implementations and host time-zone configuration can differ; verify the time zone on the machine that owns the schedule. For a different interval, change the five cron fields rather than adding sleep loops inside the capture script.
For a list of pages, use a separate script invocation per URL or have the script read a maintained URL list and produce a unique output name per page. Ensure parallel runs cannot overwrite the same file. If your API response can represent a failed or blocked capture, inspect its status or response headers before treating the saved bytes as a valid screenshot.
Use a native schedule or managed scheduler
Provider-native recurring schedule
When a screenshot provider offers recurring schedules, configure the URL, capture settings, cadence, and any available history, archive, alert, or change-detection options in that provider’s interface or API. The benefit is fewer systems to connect; the trade-off is that schedule behavior, retained results, and controls depend on that provider. Confirm how to pause or remove a schedule and what happens to existing captures first.

CI, cloud timer, or automation workflow
A CI schedule, cloud timer, or automation platform can trigger the same capture script or an HTTP request to the screenshot endpoint. This works well when schedules need to live alongside deployment or operational workflows, but the job runner becomes another part of the system to monitor. Keep the URL list and capture settings in a versioned, reviewable configuration where appropriate, and configure failure alerts in the scheduler or workflow platform.

- Make runs identifiable: include the URL or a stable page identifier and timestamp in filenames or storage keys.
- Plan for retries: retry transient failures selectively. Avoid unbounded retries, which can create duplicate work and unexpected volume.
- Prevent overlap: if a capture can take longer than the interval, configure a lock or concurrency limit so a slow run does not collide with the next one.
- Handle partial outcomes: distinguish a valid image from a bot-check page, blank result, timeout, or failed load when the service exposes such status information.
- Control archive growth: define retention and deletion rules for saved images independently of schedule deletion unless the provider documents otherwise.
- Recheck limits: quotas, supported intervals, endpoint behavior, and plan rules can change. Verify current provider documentation before increasing volume.
Troubleshoot scheduled screenshot jobs
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No output file or log entry | The scheduler did not run the job, or the command failed before output was written. | Check the crontab or workflow configuration, use absolute paths, verify the scheduler’s time zone, and inspect the job log and exit status. |
| Manual run works, scheduled run fails | The scheduler has a different environment, working directory, permissions, or secret configuration. | Use absolute paths, explicitly provide required environment variables through a secure mechanism, and run the script as the same user that owns the schedule. |
| Image is empty, incomplete, or shows a challenge | The page may not have finished rendering, may require interaction, or may be returning a bot check or other non-page response. | Inspect the returned image and any status information exposed by the API. Adjust supported wait or capture settings, and treat an unusable result as a failed run rather than a successful archive entry. |
| Files overwrite one another | The output name is fixed or does not distinguish pages or runs. | Include a timestamp and stable page identifier in each output name, and ensure concurrent runs use unique destinations. |
| Unexpectedly high volume | The schedule, number of pages, variants, or retry policy creates more renders than expected. | Recalculate URLs × runs × variants, include retries, and compare the result with the provider’s current quota and billing rules. |
| Old images disappear after removing a schedule | The provider’s retention and deletion rules may couple schedule management with result storage. | Check the service’s documented retention behavior before deleting schedules, and export results you need to keep. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I schedule screenshots only when a site changes?
That depends on whether the screenshot service or a connected monitoring workflow offers change detection; recurring capture alone does not imply it.
Can a scheduled screenshot run after each deployment instead of on a timer?
Yes, if your CI or automation workflow can trigger the capture job on a deployment event; check the workflow platform and screenshot endpoint limits.
Should I store screenshots in the screenshot provider or elsewhere?
Choose based on retention, access, and archive requirements. Confirm the provider’s retention and deletion behavior before relying on its storage.
