YouTube does not document a built-in setting that automatically restarts a podcast live stream every 12 hours. The supported do-it-yourself approach is to schedule successive live events in YouTube Studio, end each event, then start the next one through your encoder. Keep each session under 12 hours if you want YouTube to be able to archive it—but that is an archive guideline, not an automatic-restart feature or an archive guarantee.
What a 12-hour restart means on YouTube
Think of this as a handoff between separate live events, not one event that resets itself. YouTube’s documented tools let you schedule events and reuse settings, but do not describe an automatic recurring restart or seamless handoff. Each session must be ended and the next event started through the encoder and Live Control Room.
The reason creators often plan sessions below 12 hours is archiving: YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” YouTube also warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. These statements concern archives; they do not promise that a stream will restart at 12 hours or that every shorter stream will be archived. - Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live, select the Manage tab, then choose Schedule stream. Select Reuse settings to carry forward settings from a previous stream, or choose Create new. YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream
- Connect the encoder: Choose YouTube as the destination in your encoder if that option is available. Otherwise, enter the server URL shown by YouTube and paste in the stream key. The stream key is the credential the encoder uses to send the feed; keep it private.
- Start sending the feed: Start the encoder. When the preview appears in Live Control Room, check it, then click Go live. A scheduled event still needs the encoder feed and this confirmation before it goes live. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder
End one event and start its replacement
- At the end of the session, click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder.
- Schedule another event using Manage > Schedule stream. Reuse the previous settings if they still fit the upcoming session.
- Connect the encoder to that event, start sending the feed, check the preview, and click Go live.
This is a multi-step handoff, not a guaranteed gapless transition. The YouTube instructions do not establish a native recurring schedule or promise that viewers from the first event will automatically move to the replacement event.

Prepare the encoder and protect the recording
Allow time for setup
YouTube advises configuring the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Check the preview before going live, monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast, and confirm that local archive files are intact afterward. Choose an encoder suited to the production
YouTube identifies software encoders as an option and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Dedicated hardware is not needed just to schedule an event, and the cited guidance does not endorse a particular model. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder

Keep a local backup if the archive matters
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup and verifying that the saved files are intact. Do this if you need a dependable copy of the full podcast recording rather than relying only on YouTube’s automatic archiving. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

A scheduled stream can appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming. Viewers can choose Notify me, and you can share the event URL. The replacement event has its own URL and reminder opportunity, so share it with listeners; do not assume everyone watching the earlier event will be carried over automatically. Troubleshoot a missed or failed handoff
- The scheduled event is not live: Confirm the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube destination, server URL, and stream key. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live.
- The next event has no feed: Starting a new scheduled event does not itself start the encoder. Connect the encoder to the new event and begin sending content.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: A session shorter than 12 hours may be archived automatically, but YouTube does not guarantee it. A stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Check your local recording if you need the full file.
- Listeners cannot find the replacement: Share the new event URL and tell viewers to use its own Notify me option.
