YouTube Studio can schedule a livestream event, but its scheduling controls do not provide a built-in setting to rotate the playlist every six hours. To keep one broadcast live while its video content changes, schedule the event in YouTube Studio and configure the six-hour transition in your encoder or a separate playout system. If you want a new livestream event every six hours instead, schedule separate events.
Decide what “change every six hours” means
There are two different workflows, and choosing the right one determines how you schedule the stream:
- One continuous livestream with changing content: Viewers stay on the same live broadcast while your encoder or playout system switches to the next video or playlist item every six hours. YouTube schedules the event; the system sending the video feed must handle the timed switch.
- A new livestream every six hours: Each interval gets its own scheduled YouTube event and watch page. This is appropriate if you want distinct broadcasts rather than one uninterrupted live feed.
A YouTube playlist associated with videos or an event is not itself a playout system that feeds changing video into a continuous live broadcast. YouTube’s documentation distinguishes the viewer-facing liveBroadcast from the incoming audio-video liveStream; a channel can reuse stream settings for recurring broadcasts, while each event has its own content. Schedule the YouTube livestream event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Manage tab in Live Control Room.
- Choose to schedule a stream. Enter the event details, visibility, and start time. You can create a new event or reuse settings from an earlier stream.
- Save the event and check its scheduled time and visibility in Live Control Room. Scheduling creates an upcoming event that viewers can find and receive reminders for; it does not start or rotate the outgoing video feed. See YouTube’s encoder livestream setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder or playout system that will send the video to YouTube. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it or publish it.
Configure the six-hour change in your encoder or playout system
Set up the playlist or media sequence in the system that sends your audio and video to YouTube. Configure its own scheduling or automation control to switch content at the required six-hour intervals. The precise controls depend on the software or service you choose; YouTube’s documented scheduling workflow does not supply a six-hour playlist timer.

- Check that the system can schedule the transition at the interval and time you need.
- Confirm that switching media does not stop and restart the YouTube broadcast or create an unintended new event.
- Check the playback order, audio continuity, and what the system does if a video ends early or a source is unavailable.
- Verify how it behaves after an interruption, including whether it resumes the scheduled sequence or requires operator action.
The encoder is responsible for sending the live audio-video feed. YouTube’s OBS guidance discusses sending a stream to YouTube, but it does not establish a current step-by-step recipe for timed playlist rotation. Check the current documentation for your chosen encoder or playout system rather than assuming it supports this exact timing behavior.
Rehearse the timed switch before the event
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal with the same event and playout arrangement you plan to use.
- Confirm that the correct video starts, that the transition occurs at the intended six-hour boundary, and that audio and video remain usable through the change.
- Check whether the YouTube broadcast stays live during the transition. Also test the recovery behavior you would rely on if the encoder or connection is interrupted.
- On the event day, connect and start the encoder ahead of the scheduled start. YouTube recommends starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the event, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring stream quality. See its live-streaming tips.
The rehearsal is important because the transition is controlled by your chosen production system, not by the YouTube event scheduler.

If you need separate events instead
Create a separate scheduled livestream event for each broadcast period in Live Control Room. This produces distinct events rather than changing the content inside one continuous broadcast. You can reuse stream settings to reduce repeated setup, but that does not automate playlist rotation. Google’s API documentation covers scheduled broadcasts and reusable stream configurations in its Live Streaming API overview.

Understand YouTube’s archive behavior
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement concerns the archive, not a six-hour playlist switch, and it is not a recommendation or guarantee about how long a broadcast should run. Check YouTube’s encoder livestream instructions for the platform’s current workflow.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The event is scheduled, but viewers do not see the intended video: Scheduling creates the event; the encoder or playout system must still connect and send the feed. Confirm it is using the correct stream URL and key, and inspect the Live Control Room preview.
- The playlist does not change after six hours: YouTube Studio does not provide the rotation timer. Check that the timer is configured in the encoder or playout system, that its schedule is enabled, and that it is using the intended time zone and sequence.
- The broadcast ends during a content switch: The source transition may be restarting the outgoing stream rather than changing media within it. Review the playout system’s transition behavior and test it in a rehearsal before using it on a scheduled event.
- The encoder is connected but the event does not start as expected: Check the scheduled event’s start time and visibility, the stream key and URL, and the Live Control Room status. Start the encoder early enough to inspect the preview.
- You expected the archive to rotate content: Archiving and playlist rotation are separate behaviors. Configure the change in the outgoing feed; the under-12-hour archive rule does not do it for you.
