You can use Ubuntu cron to start an encoder or media-playback script at an India Standard Time (IST) clock time, but cron does not create a YouTube Live event or turn a YouTube playlist into a live broadcast. First schedule the event in YouTube Studio; then schedule and test the command that sends video to it. For India, use the unambiguous timezone name Asia/Kolkata, not the abbreviation IST.
What you can—and cannot—schedule
There are two separate jobs: YouTube Studio creates the upcoming live event and its watch page; an encoder sends a live feed to that event. Cron can start the encoder or a media-playback process at a specified time. It does not configure the feed, create the event, or guarantee YouTube will accept the feed and begin broadcasting.
If by “playlist” you mean a sequence of files that your encoder plays and sends as a live feed, cron can start the script that handles that playback. If you mean asking YouTube to play an existing channel playlist as a scheduled native Live broadcast, the YouTube instructions cited here do not document that feature. YouTube’s documented workflow is to schedule an event and separately connect an encoder using the event’s stream settings (YouTube encoder instructions; Live stream settings).
Prepare the YouTube event and encoder
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, choose Manage, and schedule a stream. The resulting scheduled event is an upcoming stream and watch page that you can promote; viewers may be able to set reminders. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Configure the encoder: Use the stream URL and stream key associated with the event. The key is a credential: treat it like a password and do not expose it in a public script, repository, or log. YouTube explains these settings in its live stream settings.
- Make the media source ready: Ensure the script can access the intended recording or playlist and that the encoder command works outside cron. The exact playback method and encoder arguments depend on your setup; the cron entry only starts the command you provide.
Choose how cron interprets the time
Cron matches five time fields and runs the command as the owner of the crontab. Its time basis depends on the host and cron implementation. Ubuntu’s Noble crontab documentation describes CRON_TZ for the cronie implementation, but that does not establish that every Ubuntu installation supports it. Check the installed cron package and its local documentation before relying on the setting (Ubuntu Noble crontab manual).

Option 1: Set an explicit cron timezone
If the installed daemon supports CRON_TZ, set the cron table’s timezone to Asia/Kolkata. This keeps the scheduled clock time in India’s IANA timezone rather than relying on the ambiguous abbreviation “IST.”
Option 2: Use the host timezone
If your cron implementation does not support that directive, keep the host’s configured timezone as the schedule basis or convert the intended India time to the host’s timezone. Consider whether changing the machine timezone would affect other services, and verify the system clock and the next scheduled run. The host’s installed cron version and timezone cannot be inferred from the fact that it runs Ubuntu.

Add the cron job
For a per-user crontab on a host whose cron daemon supports the documented timezone setting, an illustrative entry for 8:30 p.m. in India is:
CRON_TZ=Asia/Kolkata
30 20 * * * /usr/local/bin/start-youtube-playlist-stream >> /var/log/youtube-stream.log 2>&1This is a schedule shape, not a ready-to-run encoder command. Replace the script path and log location with paths that exist on your host, then validate permissions, media access, credentials, and the script’s behavior. Cron runs non-interactively, so the script should use explicit executable paths, set or establish its working directory and required environment, and send output to a location the cron owner can write.

The five schedule fields are minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week; in this example, 30 20 * * * means 8:30 p.m. every day in the configured cron timezone. A per-user crontab does not include a username field. Entries in /etc/cron.d/ or /etc/crontab do require one; consult the Ubuntu crontab manual for the format.
Test the complete broadcast before relying on cron
A successful cron launch proves only that cron started a process; it does not prove that the encoder read the media, authenticated, reached YouTube, or produced a live event. YouTube advises starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, checking the preview in Live Control Room, and then starting the stream. Follow that manual preflight before depending on an unattended schedule (YouTube live streaming tips).

- Run the exact script manually as the same account that owns the crontab.
- Confirm that the expected media plays and that the encoder connects using the scheduled event’s stream URL and key.
- Start the encoder ahead of the event, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and use YouTube’s Go live action if the event requires it.
- Check the cron log and YouTube event during a test run. Do not assume that connecting the encoder automatically starts the broadcast; verify the behavior for the specific event and account.
Common scheduling failures
- The job runs at the wrong local time: Cron may be using the host timezone, or the installed daemon may not honor
CRON_TZ. Check the local cron documentation, verify the host clock and timezone, and compare the next run against the intendedAsia/Kolkatatime. - The job works in a terminal but not from cron: A cron job is non-interactive and may not inherit your shell’s working directory, environment, or command search path. Use absolute executable and file paths, establish required environment settings in the script, and inspect redirected output.
- The script starts but YouTube shows no usable feed: Cron starting a process does not validate the encoder, network, media input, stream URL, or key. Run the script manually as the cron owner and check the Live Control Room preview.
- The scheduled event is not actually live: A scheduled event and an encoder feed are separate parts of the workflow. Check the event in Live Control Room and confirm whether YouTube requires the operator to click Go live.
- The feed is rejected or the encoder cannot connect: Confirm that the URL and key belong to the intended event, that the key has not been exposed or changed, and that the encoder is configured to send to YouTube. Keep credentials out of public files and logs.
Check YouTube account eligibility and content rights
YouTube’s live-streaming overview says channels need verification and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days; it also states a minimum age of 16. These account rules and interface details can change, so check the current YouTube live streaming overview before scheduling.
