YouTube does not offer a scheduled-live setting that resumes a playlist at its next video. To send prerecorded videos in sequence, schedule the YouTube live event in YouTube Studio and use OBS with its VLC Video source to play an ordered playlist. Keep shuffle off and choose whether the list loops. If OBS or the computer restarts, however, the reviewed OBS documentation does not guarantee that playback will continue at the next item—test that behavior on your setup before relying on it.
What “resume at the next video” means in a YouTube Live setup
A scheduled YouTube live stream creates the event and its watch page; it does not control which prerecorded file your encoder sends. For sequential playback, the creator-side playlist belongs in OBS. YouTube’s documented scheduling and encoder setup does not include a native “resume playlist at next video” switch. YouTube’s encoder guide explains how to schedule a live stream and connect an encoder, while OBS’s Media Sources guide describes a VLC Video source that can play a list of media items.
That distinction matters after an interruption: an ordered playlist can play one video after another during normal operation, but the available OBS documentation does not promise that a restart restores the playlist position. Treat “resume at the next video” after failure as something to verify, not a built-in guarantee.
Schedule the event and prepare the playlist
1. Schedule a live event in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Manage, then schedule a stream.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy or select the encoder connection details, including the stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Review the event settings and confirm the stream is ready for your intended audience. YouTube’s live stream settings guide describes the settings for scheduled streams.
The scheduled event is the destination for OBS. It does not create or advance the media playlist.

2. Install VLC and add an ordered playlist in OBS
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. The VLC Video source will not appear unless VLC is installed.
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the live output. In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source.
- Add the video files to the source’s playlist in the order you want viewers to see them. OBS describes this source as supporting a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for fixed sequential playback. Turn Loop Playlist on if you want the list to start again after its final item; leave it off if playback should stop at the end.
- Confirm the source displays video and that its audio is audible in the OBS mixer. Make sure the media files remain accessible to the computer while streaming.
These settings govern order and end-of-list behavior. They do not establish what position OBS restores after a source reload or application restart. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for the VLC Video source and its playlist controls.
3. Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube stream
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream and configure the YouTube connection using the scheduled event’s stream key and connection details. If OBS offers a YouTube account connection or manual stream-key option, use the method appropriate to your event and follow YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Start the stream from OBS before the scheduled event as needed, then check the YouTube Live Control Room preview to confirm that the correct scene, picture, and audio are arriving.
- Test the complete sequence before relying on it live. OBS recommends testing settings before streaming; its Quick Start Guide covers initial setup.
Exact OBS labels can vary by version. Use the labels present in your installed version rather than assuming a particular layout.

Choose the right loop and recovery behavior
Loop or stop at the last video
With shuffle off, the VLC Video source follows the playlist order. Looping determines what happens after the final item: with looping enabled, the list starts again; with it disabled, the playlist does not restart at its first item. Neither setting means “resume at the next video” after a crash or restart.

The documented playlist controls establish ordering, shuffle, and looping—not saved playback-position recovery or uninterrupted behavior when editing a running playlist. The sources reviewed also do not settle whether changing the list while live interrupts output. Test those cases rather than assuming the current video list or position will be preserved.
Do not confuse the playlist with YouTube’s viewer controls
- Autoplay: A viewer-side setting that plays another related video after a video ends. It does not tell the live encoder which file to send next. Its behavior can differ by device. YouTube’s Autoplay help page explains the viewer control.
- DVR: Lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume at their pause point; it does not advance the creator’s playlist. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to before the stream began. YouTube’s DVR guidance covers these limits.
- Live Redirect: Sends viewers to a selected Premiere or live stream after the current live stream ends. It is a handoff between streams, not an in-stream playlist feature. YouTube says the creator sending a redirect needs more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes; redirecting viewers to another channel also requires that channel’s permission. See YouTube’s Live Redirect guide.
Plan around long streams and archives
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Separately, YouTube’s DVR guidance says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. These address different things—archive availability and viewer rewind—so do not treat one as a guarantee of the other. If the playlist runs for many hours, decide how you want to handle the event’s duration and verify the current behavior in YouTube Studio before going live.
