To schedule a YouTube stream that alternates long videos with a short playlist, schedule an encoder-based live event in YouTube Studio and use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play your local files in the order you want. Put the long videos and the short playlist tracks into one ordered list—for example, Long Video A, Short 1, Short 2, Long Video B, then repeat—and enable Loop Playlist. YouTube schedules the event; OBS supplies the video feed. This is not a native YouTube feature that rotates videos uploaded to your channel.

What you need—and what “24/7” means here

You need a channel eligible for live streaming, OBS Studio, VLC installed on the same computer, your local video files, and an internet connection that can stay up while the stream runs. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the current YouTube Help pages for eligibility and interface changes before relying on a scheduled event.

A looping playlist only repeats media. It does not keep the computer powered on, keep OBS running, restore a failed network connection, or restart an encoder session. With a local setup, those are your responsibility.

Build the playback order in OBS

Install VLC and add a VLC Video source

  1. Install VLC on the computer that will run OBS. The OBS Project’s Media Sources guidance notes that VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, choose the scene that will carry the stream. In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video. If the source is not available, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Add the local video files to the source’s playlist. Arrange them in the exact order viewers should see them. For instance: a long video, the tracks in your short playlist, another long video, then the tracks to follow that video.
  4. Leave shuffle off if you need the videos to play in a deliberate sequence. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart the whole list when it reaches the end. The VLC source’s playlist loop is different from looping a single file; a single-file OBS Media Source has its own Loop control.
  5. Confirm the source fits the scene and preview the transitions. The VLC source plays the configured files; it does not infer that a playlist should be inserted between long videos. To repeat the short set after each long video, include those tracks at each intended position in the ordered list.

Rehearse before scheduling publicly

Run through the sequence in a private or unlisted rehearsal before promoting the event. Check that each file is present and plays, that the order is right, and that the playlist returns to the intended start when it ends. Make sure you have the rights to broadcast every video and its audio; YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance specifically calls attention to rights in stream material such as trailers, and the same concern applies to the rest of the playlist.

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
  2. Choose to reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new stream. Set the title, privacy, and other event details, then save the scheduled stream.
  3. Review the upcoming event as a viewer-facing destination. YouTube says a scheduled stream can appear in subscriber feeds, where viewers may set a reminder. If you publish a schedule, keep it accurate and communicate changes to viewers.
  4. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the scheduled event. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with someone who should not be able to send video to your channel.

The scheduled event controls the planned start and upcoming page. It does not create the video program: OBS must send the actual feed.

Connect OBS and go live

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service, and enter the server URL and stream key from the scheduled event. If OBS offers a way to connect an account instead, use the workflow appropriate to your setup; the key-and-URL workflow is the direct encoder method described by YouTube.
  2. Start streaming in OBS. Check the Live Control Room for the incoming preview and allow it to detect the feed.
  3. When the preview is ready, click Go Live in Live Control Room to start the scheduled event for viewers. Starting OBS sends the feed; the YouTube control confirms the event launch.
  4. To end the broadcast, stop the stream in YouTube and stop streaming in OBS. Do not assume that closing a playlist or reaching its end will end the scheduled event; with looping enabled, the media list repeats.

Plan around long-stream limits and interruptions

Archives and rewind

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that duration, so do not promise viewers a complete archive or full rewind across the whole stream. If an archive or rewind experience matters, account for these platform limits when deciding whether to run one continuous event.

Keeping a local stream online

For a local encoder, continuous availability depends on the computer staying on, OBS continuing to run, the internet connection remaining available, and the YouTube ingest session staying active. A loop does not recover any of those failures. If a stream drops, check whether OBS is still running and whether the connection and YouTube preview have returned; if they have not, reconnect the encoder and relaunch the event as appropriate. Monitor the stream rather than assuming a scheduled event will restart itself.

Local OBS versus cloud hosting

Approach Where media plays What you need to manage
Local encoder, such as OBS with VLC Video Your computer plays the local files and sends the feed to YouTube. Powered hardware, local internet reliability, monitoring and recovery, and media-file management.
Managed or cloud encoder hosting A remote service runs the feed and sends it to YouTube. Verify the provider’s workflow, recovery behavior, availability, playlist scheduling, price, storage handling, and rights terms before choosing it.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without requiring your computer or home connection to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
