You can schedule a YouTube live event around a looping playlist by giving each part of the job a separate role: VLC Video plays the files inside OBS, YouTube Studio schedules the event and supplies its stream key, and your computer’s scheduler launches OBS at the chosen time. This can automate a start, but it does not make a local computer continuously available or guarantee recovery after a crash or dropped connection.

What you need before setting it up

  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream, with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the scheduled start. Check the channel’s current eligibility and restrictions in YouTube Studio. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  • OBS Studio, VLC installed on the same computer, and media files the channel has the right to stream.
  • A reliable wired or wireless internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream settings.
  • A computer that can remain powered on, connected to the internet, and available to run OBS for the duration of the broadcast.

This is a scheduled start, not a hands-off cloud broadcast: playlist looping, YouTube event scheduling, and launching OBS are separate functions. A recurring playlist does not by itself create an indefinitely running YouTube event.

Build and check the playlist in OBS

  1. Install compatible applications. Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  2. Create a scene. In OBS, add or select a scene, then use the Sources panel’s + control and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.
  3. Add files and arrange them. In the VLC Video source properties, add the local video files to the playlist and put them in the order you want. Keep the files in stable locations; moving or renaming them after setup can break the playlist.
  4. Set repeat behavior explicitly. Confirm Loop Playlist is on and Shuffle Playlist is off if you want the same ordered sequence repeated. OBS documents those as the source defaults, but check the actual properties rather than relying on defaults. The VLC Video source also has visibility, caching, audio-track, and subtitle settings; adjust only those your media needs.
  5. Check the scene output. Preview the scene and confirm that the video fills the intended canvas, the playlist advances, and audio is present at a sensible level. OBS’s general Sources Guide explains source layering and visibility.

OBS documents a separate Media Source for an individual file; use VLC Video for a multi-file playlist. The Media Sources page lists formats for the standard Media Source, but does not establish that identical format support for every VLC Video configuration. Test your actual files in the scene.

Schedule the live event in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Use Manage, then choose Schedule Stream. YouTube’s labels and layout can change, so follow the current controls shown in Studio.
  2. Create the event or reuse suitable settings. Set its title, visibility, description, and scheduled start time. Confirm the time zone and event details before saving.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s encoder setup. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the server and stream key as prompted. Use the event’s connection details, not a key copied from an unrelated setup.
  4. Protect the stream key as you would a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not show it in a screen recording or share it publicly; replace it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.

Scheduling the YouTube event does not schedule VLC to play or OBS to launch. You still need the scene and playlist prepared, and OBS must connect to the event’s encoder endpoint.

Set OBS output for YouTube

Open Settings > Output and configure streaming output for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. In Settings > Video, set the output resolution and frame rate to match that plan. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and monitoring stream health. Its supported RTMP/RTMPS video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; the practical available choices also depend on your OBS build and encoder hardware. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for a bitrate that matches the chosen resolution and frame rate rather than using an old fixed figure.

  • Choose a bitrate your sustained upload connection can support, with headroom for ordinary network variation. A setting that consumes nearly all available upload capacity can cause dropped frames or an unstable stream.
  • Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds where OBS exposes that setting. Do not exceed YouTube’s stated 4-second maximum.
  • Select CBR rather than a variable bitrate mode for the stream.
  • Use RTMPS when available in the YouTube service/server choices.
  • Do a complete test with the actual playlist. Check picture, sound, scene transitions, stream health, and the YouTube preview before relying on the scheduled run.

Launch OBS at the scheduled time

OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. It can tell OBS to begin streaming when launched, but the operating-system scheduler must still be configured correctly. OBS specifically says scheduled-task launches should use the folder containing obs64.exe as the working directory (“Start in…”). Its launch guide documents the parameter and this working-directory requirement, but does not provide a complete scheduler recipe for every OS: OBS Launch Parameters.

Windows Task Scheduler outline

  1. First, make a shortcut to OBS and test it by adding --startstreaming after the executable target. The executable is commonly named obs64.exe for 64-bit OBS; use the actual installation path on your computer.
  2. Open Task Scheduler and create a task with a time trigger corresponding to the YouTube event. Choose a trigger that reflects whether this is a one-time or repeating schedule.
  3. For the action, select Start a program. Set the program/script to the full path of obs64.exe, add --startstreaming in the arguments field, and set Start in to the folder containing obs64.exe.
  4. Review the task’s account and power conditions. The computer must be awake and able to run OBS; a task setting cannot make a powered-off or disconnected computer stream. Choose settings that do not unexpectedly prevent the task from running when the machine is idle, and test the behavior under the account you intend to use.
  5. Run the task manually before the event. Confirm OBS opens the correct profile and scene, connects to the right YouTube event, and sends the playlist. Then confirm the preview and stream health in Live Control Room.

The exact Task Scheduler labels can vary across Windows versions. macOS and Linux need their own scheduler setup; OBS documents macOS invocation through Automator and Terminal (open -a "OBS" --args), but that is not a complete schedule configuration. Do not assume the Windows steps transfer unchanged to launchd or cron.

Test the event and understand the 24/7 limitation

Before depending on automation, start OBS early enough to inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend preparing the encoder ahead of the event, checking the preview, verifying local archive files, confirming access through the channel and watch pages, and monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold is not a guarantee that one event is suitable as a permanent 24/7 broadcast. Plan how you will handle event duration and any transition to another event, and check YouTube’s current rules and interface before scheduling. A loop in OBS only repeats the media while OBS and the connection continue operating; it does not restart OBS after a crash or restore a feed automatically after a failure.

Copyright, reused content, and channel eligibility

Only stream videos and audio you have the rights or permissions to use for this kind of public broadcast. A track or video being available online, or having been purchased for personal use, does not establish that you can rebroadcast it. Copyright claims, blocks, or strikes can affect a live stream and the channel. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming policies before putting third-party material in a 24/7 loop.

Permission to use media and eligibility for monetization are different questions. A playlist made from repetitive or minimally changed material may also raise reused-content or originality concerns under YouTube’s monetization policies; owning a copy alone does not guarantee monetization approval. Check the current policy wording in YouTube Studio and make the channel’s contribution and rights clear rather than treating continuous playback as a monetization strategy.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • VLC Video is missing from OBS sources: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for this source.
  • The playlist does not repeat: Open the VLC Video source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. Check that the source is active and its file paths still resolve.
  • Files play in the wrong order or unexpectedly change: Reorder the playlist and turn off Shuffle Playlist if a fixed sequence is required.
  • YouTube receives no video: Verify the correct event’s stream key and server details in OBS, confirm the scene has a visible VLC Video source, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages.
  • The stream starts late or not at all: Check the scheduled event time and time zone, task trigger and account, computer power state, OBS executable path, launch argument, and scheduler working directory. Test the same task manually.
  • The broadcast drops or has unstable video: Check the connection and OBS dropped-frame indicators, lower the bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain them, and compare settings with YouTube’s current encoder table. A scheduled launch does not itself recover a dropped stream.
  • Audio is silent or distorted: Test the playlist’s audio in OBS before the event, check the VLC source’s audio-track selection and OBS mixer level, and listen to the YouTube preview during a test.
  • The stream ends despite Loop Playlist being on: Loop controls media playback, not the lifetime of the YouTube event, computer, OBS process, or internet connection. Check event duration and local system or network interruptions separately.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube playlist without keeping a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only.
