You can switch a YouTube 24/7 playlist at sunrise, but the switch must be handled by the system sending the video feed—not by a scheduled YouTube broadcast alone. Choose the Indian location and date that define “sunrise,” obtain that location’s sunrise time, convert it to the playout scheduler’s timezone, and trigger a playlist change while keeping the live feed connected. YouTube’s live-streaming model separates the watchable broadcast from the audio/video stream, so schedule and test both parts of the workflow.
What “regional sunrise” means for a 24/7 stream
India does not have one sunrise time. Sunrise depends on the date and the coordinates used for the calculation. Before building a schedule, decide whether you want one stream to switch according to a selected reference location—such as Jaipur—or separate streams or channels for different regions. A city’s sunrise is not automatically representative of every location in a region.
Also decide what the switch means editorially: for example, moving from a night playlist to a dawn playlist. If the change should happen a set number of minutes before or after calculated sunrise, record that offset explicitly. There is no universally correct technical buffer; choose one for your content and test it.
Can YouTube schedule the playlist change automatically?
YouTube’s live-streaming system distinguishes a liveBroadcast, the watchable event, from a liveStream, the feed that carries audio and video. YouTube’s broadcast scheduling and lifecycle settings do not, by themselves, establish an automated sunrise-based change to prerecorded playlist content. The content switch belongs in the encoder or playout system that supplies the feed.

You can schedule a broadcast and bind it to a stream, but the scheduler must separately keep the feed running and change the content at the calculated trigger time. YouTube’s API reference documents ISO 8601 timestamps for scheduledStartTime and auto-start/auto-stop settings; those settings control aspects of the broadcast lifecycle, not which video plays at sunrise. See the YouTube Live Streaming API broadcast implementation guide, API overview, and broadcast resource settings.
Build the workflow
1. Choose the reference location and schedule rule
For every playlist transition, store the location (latitude and longitude), the local calendar date, and the rule that selects the playlist. If one channel serves a broad audience, state internally which reference location drives the change. If separate regional streams need their own dawn transitions, calculate and schedule each independently.
2. Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast
Create the live broadcast with its title, privacy status, and scheduled start time, then bind it to the live stream that will carry the feed. You can do this through YouTube’s live tools or its API, depending on your setup. A scheduled event is not a substitute for a connected encoder or playout service.

With the API, use an ISO 8601 timestamp for scheduledStartTime and check the broadcast’s lifecycle settings. Confirm the broadcast is bound to the intended stream before relying on automation. YouTube’s broadcast resource documentation describes the relevant fields.
3. Keep one live feed running while the playlist changes
Configure an encoder or playout system to send the continuous feed to YouTube and switch the active content at the scheduled trigger. The feed should remain connected across the change; starting a new event is not the same thing as changing content within an ongoing live feed.
A local encoder or server gives you control over the playout software, but it generally needs to stay powered, connected, and free of sleep or restart interruptions. A cloud playout service can avoid reliance on a home machine, but its actual playlist controls, scheduling behavior, recovery, availability, and costs depend on the provider. YtLive Stream advertises cloud broadcasting, playlists, and time-based scheduling; those are the provider’s own claims, not independent validation. Check its current documentation, terms, availability, and price before adopting it.

4. Retrieve sunrise times for the selected coordinates
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) API reference includes a Sun Moon (Rise/Set) Time endpoint that accepts latitude and longitude. Its Jaipur example identifies the returned sunrise time as IST. Check live access requirements and the current response schema before implementing a production schedule. Consult the IMD API reference.
Sunrise-Sunset.org API v2 accepts coordinates and documents local-time output by default, as well as date ranges of up to 366 days. Its terms require visible attribution when you use its data. The provider’s changelog reports a calculation correction on September 14, 2026, so confirm current behavior and terms before building against it. See the Sunrise-Sunset.org API v2 documentation.
NOAA also publishes a solar calculation method based on location and date. Its sunrise/sunset convention uses a 90.833° zenith, accounting approximately for atmospheric refraction and the solar disk. NOAA states theoretical calculation accuracy of about one minute between latitudes ±72° and within ten minutes outside that range; actual observed times can differ with atmospheric conditions. This is a stated theoretical accuracy, not a field measurement for Indian cities or a guarantee of the visible sunrise. NOAA’s calculator is no longer actively supported or maintained, and NOAA does not guarantee its accuracy or functionality. See its calculation details, accuracy notes, and calculator notice.

5. Convert the time and define the trigger
Make the timezone explicit at every handoff. The IMD example reports IST; Sunrise-Sunset.org v2 says local time is the default. Your scheduler may expect a local timezone or a UTC instant. Preserve the location and local date used to calculate sunrise, then store or convert the event with an explicit timezone so a server setting cannot silently shift the trigger.
Log the returned sunrise time, its stated timezone, the converted scheduler time, any editorial offset, and the playlist transition result. Test the conversion against a known date and location before automating a live channel.

- Schedule a private or otherwise controlled broadcast and bind it to the intended stream.
- Connect the encoder or playout system and confirm that the live feed reaches YouTube.
- Check the sunrise input, location, date, timezone, and converted trigger time.
- Observe the content change at the trigger and verify that the feed and broadcast remain in the expected state.
- Repeat with another location and date; test a manual correction path in case sunrise data is unavailable or late.
- Review logs and the broadcast status after the transition. YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle guide explains testing and status transitions.
Choose local or cloud playout
| Consideration | Local encoder or playout | Cloud playout |
|---|---|---|
| Where the feed is processed | On your computer or server. | On the provider’s infrastructure, according to its description. |
| What must stay running | Typically, the local machine, network connection, and encoder. Validate your particular setup. | Depends on the service; verify its operating and recovery arrangements. |
| Sunrise playlist scheduling | Depends on the encoder or software’s scheduling and playlist controls. | Depends on the provider’s documented scheduler and playlist controls. |
| What to verify | Sleep and restart behavior, network stability, encoder state, and the transition trigger. | Current feature availability, logs, recovery, regional access, terms, and pricing. |
Neither approach is established as universally better. The right choice depends on your ability to operate and monitor the playout layer. You do not need a particular camera, capture card, or physical encoder solely to calculate sunrise; the core requirement is reliable schedule logic and a feed that can change content without interrupting the live stream.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for a 24/7 playlist
Before scheduling prerecorded videos, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream every video and its audio on YouTube. A sunrise trigger does not alter copyright obligations. Also assess whether your channel’s material and presentation comply with YouTube’s current policies, including rules relevant to repetitive or reused content. These checks are separate from the technical ability to keep a feed live; consult YouTube’s current policy guidance for the content and channel involved.
Common problems and fixes
- The transition happens at the wrong hour: Check whether the sunrise provider returned local time or UTC, whether the scheduler uses a different timezone, and whether a conversion or daylight-saving assumption was applied. Re-test with the same coordinates and date.
- The playlist does not change: Verify that the scheduler trigger is enabled, the selected location and date are correct, and the playout system can change content without restarting the feed. Check its event logs and perform a controlled manual transition.
- The stream disconnects at the switch: Determine whether the playout software is restarting the encoder or replacing the stream rather than changing its source content. Test the transition while monitoring both the feed and YouTube broadcast status.
- The sunrise time is missing or unexpected: Check API access, response schema, coordinate order and values, date, and the provider’s timezone convention. Keep a manual correction path and avoid treating a missing value as a valid trigger.
- A city schedule is mistaken for a region-wide schedule: Make the reference coordinates visible in your operations notes and calculate separate triggers where separate regional timing is required.
