To capture a website automatically on the first day of every month, schedule a browser-automation script with a scheduler that supports monthly dates, or use a hosted screenshot service with recurring schedules. Set the run time and timezone explicitly, choose whether you need the visible viewport, the full page, or a particular element, and save each capture with its date.
Choose a hosted service or a self-managed workflow

For a one-time setup without code, a hosted service may be simpler. Site-Shot describes browser-configured recurring captures stored in a library, while Add Screenshots describes monthly schedules, custom cron expressions, reusable browser settings, and delivery options such as cloud storage, FTP, webhooks, or email. These are vendors’ own descriptions; confirm current features, plan restrictions, retention, and delivery before relying on them. Set up a recurring hosted capture
- Create a capture job for the page URL you want to record.
- Choose a monthly schedule and set it to run on day 1. Select a specific time and timezone; do not assume a service’s default timezone.
- Choose the capture scope: initial viewport, full page, or an element if supported.
- Choose an output format and verify where captures are retained or delivered.
- Check the service’s current plan limits and run a test capture. Confirm that the saved image contains the intended page content.
Vendor interfaces and plan details can change, so check the current service documentation rather than relying on a remembered menu path. In particular, confirm how the service handles the first day in every month and the timezone used to interpret that schedule.

Build a self-managed monthly screenshot with Playwright
Playwright takes the screenshot; a separate scheduler runs your script on the first calendar day of each month. The example below captures the full page and writes a date-stamped PNG. Install Playwright and its browser before scheduling the script, and choose a stable environment for repeat captures.

}networkidle can be unsuitable for pages with persistent network activity. If navigation does not settle, use an appropriate load condition such as domcontentloaded and, where needed, wait for a page-specific selector before capturing.
Choose the capture scope
- Initial viewport: use

await page.screenshot({ path: 'full.png', fullPage: true }). This includes scrollable page content; lazy-loaded content may require scrolling or other page-specific preparation before capture. - One element: locate it and capture its bounding box:

Playwright documents these screenshot options in its screenshot guide. For monthly comparisons, keep the browser environment consistent: Playwright notes that rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its visual comparison documentation advises: “For consistent screenshots, run in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” See Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance. A visual comparison assertion is designed to compare with a baseline and requires the Playwright test runner; it is not, by itself, a general monthly archive.

Schedule the script
Configure your chosen scheduler to run node /absolute/path/to/screenshot.mjs on day 1, with TARGET_URL set in its environment. Use the scheduler’s own documentation for its syntax and timezone setting; those details vary by scheduler. Verify day-of-month behavior, including what happens when a scheduled date is unavailable in a shorter month, and make the scheduler’s timezone explicit.
For GitHub Actions, shot-scraper’s documentation describes using Actions for screenshot automation; consult its GitHub Actions guide. Whatever scheduler you use, ensure it can access the script, browser dependencies, and destination, and that each run writes to a distinct dated filename rather than overwriting the previous image.

- No screenshot appeared: check scheduler run history and logs, then run the script manually. Confirm the scheduler has the right working directory, environment variables, Node.js installation, and browser dependencies.
- The run happened on the wrong date or at the wrong hour: set the scheduler timezone explicitly and verify its day-of-month rules. Do not assume the host machine’s local timezone matches your intended schedule.
- The image is blank or incomplete: check that navigation finished and that the target page is accessible from the execution environment. For dynamic pages, wait for a meaningful selector; for lazy-loaded pages, make the page load the content before taking a full-page shot.
- Capture times out: inspect whether the page remains active due to analytics, ads, or long-running requests. Consider waiting for
domcontentloadedinstead ofnetworkidle, then wait for the content you actually need. - Images differ even though the site did not: compare browser version, operating system, viewport, device scale, fonts, headless mode, and page state with the previous run. Changes in those conditions can alter rendering.
- Older images were overwritten: include a date in the filename and verify that the destination retains previous runs.
Keep a useful monthly visual record
Decide what change the archive should reveal before choosing capture settings. A full-page capture is useful for broad layout review, while a fixed viewport makes the same visible area easier to compare. Keep the run time, timezone, viewport, browser environment, and output naming consistent, and verify the first scheduled run and saved destination rather than assuming the schedule alone guarantees a usable archive.
