To schedule a recorded sermon as a YouTube Live event, schedule an encoder-based stream in YouTube Studio, then use streaming software such as OBS to play the sermon recording into that event at the service time. Studio creates the event and provides its stream URL and key; the encoder sends the video. YouTube Studio does not provide a direct control to select a video file and schedule it as a Live stream.

Choose the right way to publish the sermon

Use an encoder-based livestream if you want a scheduled Live event and a live feed from the sermon file at the appointed time. It requires an encoder to be running and an operator to start and monitor it.

If you do not need an encoder-based Live event, consider the alternatives:

  • Premiere: schedules an uploaded video for viewers to watch together on a scheduled watch page, with reminders and chat.
  • Scheduled publishing: makes a private upload public at the date and time you choose. Choose this when the main goal is simply to publish the sermon at a particular time.

These options behave differently from an encoder livestream. YouTube Help documents each workflow: Premieres and scheduled video publishing.

Check channel readiness before announcing the event

  • Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the church’s YouTube channel. Initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube’s live-streaming tips require a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • Prepare the final sermon recording and confirm that the church has the rights to use all video, music, images, and other material in it.

Check the channel’s eligibility before sharing the event link, especially if this will be its first livestream. YouTube’s current requirements and encoder workflow are described in its live-streaming instructions and live-streaming tips.

Prepare the sermon in OBS

  1. Install and open OBS Studio on the computer that will run the broadcast.
  2. Create a scene for the sermon. In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source.
  3. Select the sermon file. OBS documents common supported formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM.
  4. For a single sermon, leave Loop off. Decide what viewers should see when playback ends: if Close file when inactive or the source’s hide-at-end behavior is enabled, configure an intentional ending scene or screen rather than leaving the ending to chance.
  5. Check the video and audio in the OBS preview. Confirm that the file’s audio is audible and that no desktop notifications or unrelated sources will appear on stream.

These steps combine YouTube’s encoder workflow with OBS’s documented local Media Source. YouTube does not describe this as a built-in Studio feature. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

Schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
  2. Choose to reuse a prior stream’s settings or create a new stream.
  3. Enter the title and description, then choose the date, time, audience setting, and visibility. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility options.
  4. Save the scheduled stream. Use its event/watch page to share the event; scheduled events may allow viewers to set reminders.

YouTube may change Studio labels, so check the current interface if a menu name differs. The event scheduling workflow is covered in YouTube’s encoder livestream instructions.

Connect OBS to the scheduled event

  1. Open the scheduled event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose the YouTube service or the appropriate YouTube ingest option, then enter or connect the event’s stream details as prompted.
  3. Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as similar to a password and address. Do not put it in volunteer guides, screenshots, or shared chats. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS with the replacement.
  4. Check that OBS is sending the intended scene and that the scheduled event’s Live Control Room receives the feed.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. For resolution, bitrate, and other encoder settings, follow YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance and test against the church’s actual upload capacity. A single bitrate or resolution is not right for every network and encoder setup.

Rehearse, go live, and end the event

  1. Allow setup time. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before the stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event.
  2. Check the preview. Confirm in the Live Control Room that the sermon image and audio are coming through correctly before selecting Go live at the intended time.
  3. Check viewer access. Open the event from the channel or watch page, and verify access on a mobile device. Make sure the event’s visibility matches the intended audience.
  4. Monitor the service. Keep an operator available to watch stream health and listen for audio or playback problems throughout the sermon.
  5. End cleanly. At the end, end the event in Live Control Room and stop sending content from OBS. Afterwards, check the replay in YouTube Studio’s Live content area. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archiving behavior for longer streams.

The timing and monitoring recommendations are in YouTube Help’s livestream preparation tips.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The channel cannot start a livestream: live streaming may not yet be enabled, enablement can take up to 24 hours, or the channel may not meet YouTube’s verification or restriction requirements. Check eligibility before scheduling or promoting the event.
  • The event is scheduled but no video appears: Studio schedules the event but does not send the recording. Start the OBS encoder, verify its stream settings and connection, and check the Live Control Room for the incoming feed.
  • The preview is silent or shows the wrong content: check the OBS scene, Media Source selection, and audio meters. Confirm the intended file is playing and that its audio is routed into the stream.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: reset it in YouTube’s stream settings, then replace the old key in OBS. Treat the new key as a credential.
  • The recording ends before the service does: check the file duration and have an ending scene ready. If the file should repeat, enable looping deliberately; for a one-time sermon, keep looping off.
  • Viewers cannot open the event: check the event’s visibility and test the watch page from a viewer’s perspective, including on mobile.
