You can use a spare laptop to send a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live, but YouTube Studio’s schedule creates the event—not the continuous video feed. You still need an encoder running on the laptop, a reliable internet connection, rights-cleared media, and a plan for YouTube’s limits on very long streams. This guide walks through the setup for Indian creators and explains what to expect from a 24/7 broadcast.
What a 24/7 playlist channel requires
The laptop plays or encodes your playlist and sends it to YouTube through an encoder. YouTube Studio creates the scheduled event and its watch page; it does not run the playlist for you. The laptop must stay powered, awake, connected, and stable while the encoder is streaming.
“24/7” describes your intended schedule, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation or a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Plan how you will handle replays before going live.

Check channel eligibility before preparing the laptop
- Your channel must be verified and have had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current general guidance sets the minimum age for livestreaming at 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Enable live streaming in advance. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
- Confirm you can access Live Control Room and create a stream before arranging a launch time. An account restriction or pending activation can prevent your event from going live.
Prepare the playlist and clear its rights
Use video and audio that you have the right to stream in the intended territories and for the intended use. Public availability on the internet does not establish permission to rebroadcast music or video. You are responsible for rights and licensing that apply to your playlist.

YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. If it detects content that matches a third party, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if the content remains. Even having a license may not prevent a Content ID interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and resolve rights questions before scheduling.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live → Manage.
- Select Schedule Stream, then create a new event or reuse settings from a previous stream.
- Set the title, description, privacy, and scheduled date and time. Check how the current Studio interface displays the time and time zone before sharing the event with viewers in India or elsewhere.
- Save the event and copy its watch-page link if you want to share it ahead of time. A scheduled event can appear as upcoming, and viewers may be able to select “Notify me.” Scheduling does not start your encoder or generate the video feed.

Configure the encoder on the spare laptop
- Choose an encoder that can play or receive your playlist and send a live feed. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; the right choice depends on your laptop and workflow. YouTube does not publish a universal minimum laptop specification for this setup.
- In the encoder’s YouTube destination or streaming settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key associated with your event. You can find the stream connection details in Live Control Room. Follow the encoder’s own instructions for loading the playlist and making it repeat continuously.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control your stream. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Keep the laptop connected to power and prevent it from sleeping while the encoder is running. Check that its cooling and condition are suitable for sustained operation; an old laptop’s ability to stay stable cannot be inferred from its age or model alone.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the stream URL and key workflow. The encoder sends the feed; the scheduled event is the viewer-facing event.

Check outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. Compare the available upload capacity with the encoder’s selected bitrate, leave headroom, and account for other people and devices using the same connection. A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful option if available, but no connection method guarantees an uninterrupted stream. YouTube warns that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the scheduled event. Use the time to confirm the playlist, stream key, outbound connection, and laptop stability.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, as YouTube recommends. Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that both video and audio are arriving correctly.
- Monitor the stream and connection during the test. A successful preview confirms the feed is reaching YouTube at that moment; it does not prove that an unspecified laptop or internet connection will stay up indefinitely.
Plan for long-stream replays and interruptions
A single stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond that threshold. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Preserve the original playlist files and decide whether you need a separate local recording or shorter sessions to make replay handling more manageable. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish an official restart cadence for a 24/7 channel.
For ongoing operations, make a practical plan for power, internet interruptions, encoder restarts, and checking the channel. YouTube’s scheduling tools do not keep the laptop awake or recover the feed if the laptop, encoder, or connection fails.
