To schedule an encoder-based YouTube livestream, open YouTube Studio > Create > Go Live > Manage > Schedule stream. Choose Reuse settings or Create new, save the event, then connect your encoder with the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room. At broadcast time, start the encoder, check the preview, and click Go live.
Scheduling creates an upcoming event; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast or a complete replay. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so plan local recording and ongoing monitoring.
Schedule the livestream in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Start a scheduled event. Open Manage > Schedule stream.
- Choose how to set it up. Select Reuse settings for a repeat event, or Create new for a fresh setup.
- Set the event details. Enter the metadata, choose visibility, and review any available stream options before saving. A scheduled stream can appear to viewers as an upcoming event; they can share its watch URL and request a notification. YouTube’s scheduling instructions describe the workflow.
Scheduling sets up the event page and its planned start. It does not itself send video: an encoder must connect and transmit the feed, and you must take the event live in Live Control Room.

- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, find the stream URL and stream key for the event.
- Enter them in your encoder. Use the URL and key shown by YouTube. The key is a credential that authorizes an encoder to send video to your stream, so treat it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s stream setup guidance.
- Choose RTMP or RTMPS deliberately. YouTube documents RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. If you need encrypted ingestion, copy and confirm the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room; the default displayed address may be ordinary RTMP. Details: YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm the expected video and audio arrive in Live Control Room before proceeding.
- Take the event live. Click Go live in Live Control Room. When the event is finished, end it with the Live Control Room control and stop sending encoder content, following YouTube’s encoder workflow.
What 24/7 scheduling does—and does not—guarantee
A scheduled event is not a promise that YouTube will keep a single broadcast running indefinitely. More importantly, YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on the YouTube replay as the sole recording of a continuous broadcast. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the limit.

For a continuous channel, arrange a local recording and check that the recording file continues to grow. Decide in advance how you will respond to an encoder, connection, or stream interruption, including whether to restart the event. The archive limit is separate from stream continuity: a stream can remain live while its complete archive is not preserved.
Prepare and monitor the stream
YouTube’s preparation guidance recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before an event. These are event-preparation recommendations, not guarantees for 24/7 availability. YouTube also advises previewing before going live, testing backup-encoder failover, checking local archive integrity and file growth, verifying access from the channel and watch pages and on mobile, and continuously monitoring audio and video. - Check the preview for correct picture and sound before clicking Go live.
- Monitor the broadcast and recording rather than assuming that a successful start means the stream will remain healthy.
- Test backup-encoder failover before relying on it during an interruption.
- Check that viewers can reach the event from the channel and watch pages, including on mobile.
Encoder choice and simultaneous-stream limits
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming without requiring a dedicated hardware encoder. Software encoding may suit a computer-based workflow; a separate hardware encoder is an option when the production needs a dedicated device. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but that recommendation is conditional—not a requirement for every channel or a guarantee of uninterrupted operation. YouTube Help states a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key, with both limits applying at the same time. These are concurrency limits; they do not specify how long one stream may run or guarantee its reliability. YouTube’s active-stream limits.

Troubleshoot common scheduling and streaming problems
The scheduled event is not live
Scheduling does not start the encoder or take the event live. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the URL and key for the scheduled event, wait for its preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live.
The encoder will not connect
Check that the encoder has the current stream URL and key copied from Live Control Room and that the selected protocol matches the URL. If you switched to RTMPS, confirm that the encoder supports it and that you used the RTMPS address rather than assuming the default URL is encrypted. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and replace it in the encoder.

The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete
A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local recording for a continuous broadcast and verify file growth and integrity rather than relying on the YouTube archive.
Viewers cannot find or access the event
Check the event’s visibility and test access through the channel and watch pages, including on mobile. A scheduled event may be shared by its watch URL, and viewers may request a notification, but those options do not replace checking that the event is configured as intended.

The broadcast quality changes or fails during the run
Inspect the encoder output and monitor audio and video continuously. Test backup-encoder failover in advance, and check both the live feed and the local recording; YouTube’s preparation advice does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
