Use a cross-device bookmark manager to collect webpages, images, videos, and links in one searchable library. Raindrop.io is a strong all-purpose option for organizing bookmarks and mixed media; wallabag is better suited to an article-reading archive you control, while Recollect describes a visual library for links and media. These are capabilities described by the services, not results of hands-on testing.
Before choosing, check whether “save” means keeping a link, a preview, extracted article text, an archived copy, or the original uploaded file. Those are different things, and not every service or plan preserves all of them.
Choose the kind of library you need
Start with the job you want the library to do. Trying to make one collection serve equally well as a reading queue, a visual media catalog, and a permanent archive can make it harder to retrieve anything.

- Article-reading archive: Choose a read-it-later tool that extracts article content into a clean reading view. wallabag focuses on this and offers hosted and self-hosted options.
- Visual, mixed-media library: Look for support for images, videos, and documents, and check whether the service stores files or only their links and previews. Recollect describes a library for links, images, videos, and documents.

Understand what gets saved
A bookmark usually points to a page hosted elsewhere. It does not necessarily preserve the page if it changes, disappears, or becomes inaccessible. A preview or extracted reading view is also not the same as an archived copy of the original page.
Raindrop.io describes automatic copies of webpages and files, but its FAQ says permanent copies are a Pro feature. Its homepage also advertises search across saved webpages, PDFs, and YouTube video speech; the FAQ places full-text search in Pro. Treat these as vendor-described features, and confirm which content types and plan apply before relying on them: product overview and feature and plan FAQ.

For media, ask whether you are saving a URL, a preview, or the media file itself. Raindrop.io lists image, video, and PDF uploads and in-library video viewing. Recollect lists links, images, videos, and documents, and says it recognizes text in images. Those descriptions do not establish that every saved link or preview includes a permanent copy of the original media: Raindrop.io and Recollect.
Set up one library and test capture
- Choose one primary service. Decide whether reading, general bookmarking, or mixed-media organization is the main purpose. Keeping most saves in one place makes the library easier to search than scattering them among browser folders, email, and chat.
- Enable capture on the devices you use. Install the service’s browser extension and, where available, its mobile app or share-sheet workflow. Raindrop.io lists browser extensions and access for Windows, Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Android. Check its download page for current availability and minimum operating-system versions.
- Save a few different examples. Try one article, one ordinary webpage, one image or screenshot, and one video. Open each entry and check whether it is a link, a preview, extracted text, an archived page, or an uploaded file.
- Check cross-device access yourself. Save an item on one device, then open the library on another. This confirms that your chosen setup behaves as you expect; service feature listings alone do not verify a particular account or device combination.
Organize for retrieval, not for its own sake
Begin with an Inbox and a few collections that match recurring tasks, such as Read, Watch, Reference, and Projects. Move items out of the Inbox when you have decided where they belong. Add tags when they help answer a question you expect to ask again, rather than tagging every item with a long list of labels.

Raindrop.io describes collections, tags, filters by type and domain, and full-text search on Pro. Recollect says it can recognize text in images. Consider how you actually look for things—by project, topic, file type, source, or words inside content—when deciding which features matter. Check plans, compatibility, and portability
Raindrop.io says its free use includes unlimited bookmarks, collections, and devices. Its FAQ lists full-text search, permanent copies, more upload space, cloud backup, and cleanup tools among Pro features. Pricing is not stated here; check the service’s current plan details rather than assuming features or limits will remain unchanged: Raindrop.io FAQ.

At the time Raindrop.io’s download page was checked in 2026, it listed iOS 17.4 or later, Android 7.0 or later, macOS Monterey 12 or later, and Windows 10 or later. These are product compatibility details, not general device recommendations; confirm the current requirements on the download page.

For material you cannot afford to lose, inspect export, backup, and archive options before building a large library. Raindrop.io describes import/export and automatic page and file copies; wallabag offers self-hosting and imports. Neither a bookmark nor an archive guarantees complete preservation of every dynamic or access-restricted page. Keep an additional backup of important material where the tool and applicable rights allow it: Raindrop.io and wallabag.
Do not start a new library with Pocket
Pocket is no longer a current option: Mozilla Support says the service shut down on July 8, 2025. Mozilla also says Firefox integration removal began with Firefox 140 and ESR versions 115 and 128. Its support notice is marked unmaintained, so use it only for the shutdown information, not old setup directions: Mozilla’s Pocket shutdown notice.
Keep the collection usable
Every so often, review the Inbox, remove duplicates, and delete dead links if your chosen tool supports cleanup. For particularly important material, check that you can still access the saved version or export; a working bookmark alone may not preserve the third-party content it points to.
