Use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() method with a filename ending in .jpg or .jpeg. For explicit intent, set type: 'jpeg' and choose a quality value from 0 through 100. The default format is PNG, so specifying JPEG (or using a JPEG filename extension) matters.
The shortest working example
This ES module saves the page at https://example.com as a JPEG file:

}quality: 80 is only a starting value; Puppeteer documents the allowed range, not one universally best setting. The API spelling is jpeg, while jpg and jpeg are common filename extensions. The example uses Puppeteer’s current documented option names; the versioned API references displayed version 25.12.0 on September 29, 2026.

How Puppeteer chooses the JPEG format
Use the filename extension
When you provide a path, Puppeteer infers the output format from that path’s extension. Therefore, this is sufficient:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'home.jpeg' });A relative path is resolved from the process’s current working directory. If you need a predictable location in a build or CI job, pass an absolute path or construct one from the directory your process intentionally uses.
Set type: 'jpeg' explicitly
An explicit type makes the format clear even when a path is generated dynamically:

quality accepts a number from 0 through 100. It applies to JPEG output and has no effect on PNG. Puppeteer does not publish a single best quality value, so choose one based on your own visual and storage requirements rather than treating 80 as a recommendation.

});Keep the setting inside the documented range. If a caller can supply quality dynamically, validate it before passing it to Puppeteer so an invalid request does not reach the browser.
Save to disk, or keep the image in memory

The return behavior is documented in the Page.screenshot() API. For an HTTP response, object store, or database, omitting path avoids a temporary file:

Full-page JPEG
Set fullPage: true when the screenshot should include the full scrollable page rather than only the current viewport:

Use clip to capture a specific region. The rectangle is expressed with coordinates and dimensions:

Find an element and call ElementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer scrolls the element into view when necessary. The call throws if the element has detached from the DOM before capture; reacquire the handle and try again after the page has finished updating. Backgrounds and JPEG’s transparency limitation
omitBackground: true hides Puppeteer’s default white background and permits transparency where the selected output format supports it. JPEG is not a transparent-pixel format, so do not expect an alpha channel in a JPEG file. If transparency is required, choose an output format that supports it instead of JPEG.

A production-friendly Puppeteer script
The following CommonJS program accepts a URL and output filename, creates the parent directory, and always closes the browser. The screenshot options make JPEG output explicit.

Timing, concurrency, and reliability notes
- Keep the
try/finallybrowser pattern in long-running jobs. It closes Chromium when navigation or capture fails. - Do not assume that omitting
pathwrites a hidden file: it returns data in memory and creates no disk output. - During a screenshot in a BrowserContext, some page-creation and close methods wait for the screenshot to finish. This matters when several captures share a context.
Page.bringToFront()does not wait for a screenshot. - For element captures, obtain a fresh handle after major DOM updates. A detached handle causes
ElementHandle.screenshot()to throw. - The official references do not publish comparative JPEG file-size or visual-quality measurements. Measure your own pages if you need a storage or bandwidth policy.

The file is PNG even though I expected JPG
Check both the extension and the option. Use a .jpg or .jpeg path and, when clarity matters, set type: 'jpeg'. If the path has no extension and no explicit type, the documented default is PNG.
No file appears
Confirm that you supplied path. Without it, Puppeteer returns a Uint8Array (or base64 text when requested) and does not save a file. Also check the process’s current working directory when using a relative path.
Changing quality does nothing
quality is not applicable to PNG. Set type: 'jpeg' or use a JPEG extension before evaluating quality changes, and keep the value between 0 and 100.
The element screenshot throws about a detached node
The element changed or was removed after you obtained its handle. Query the element again after the page update, verify the handle is not null, and then call screenshot().

The image is not transparent
JPEG cannot promise transparent pixels. Use a format that supports transparency, such as PNG, with omitBackground: true when that is the actual requirement.
Concurrent captures appear to wait
Shared BrowserContext operations can wait while a screenshot is running. Isolate independent work in separate contexts or schedule captures so that page creation and closing are not unexpectedly blocked. The documented exception is that bringToFront() does not wait.
