To save a Playwright MCP screenshot under a specific name, pass a filename to browser_take_screenshot. A relative filename resolves from the MCP workspace root. To send automatically named screenshots to a chosen directory instead, configure the MCP server with --output-dir or PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_OUTPUT_DIR. These settings serve different purposes: --output-dir does not redirect an explicitly named screenshot.
Choose how you want the file named and placed
Playwright MCP provides two ways to choose a screenshot destination. Use filename when the tool call should save a specific file at a predictable path. Configure an output directory when you want screenshots without an explicit filename to be saved there automatically. The Playwright MCP README documents both behaviors, and the screenshot tool documentation describes the filename and capture options (Playwright MCP README; Playwright MCP screenshot tool).

The absolute workspace root depends on the MCP host and deployment. The documentation specifies the relative-path rule, but does not identify the root for every editor, agent, or remote setup. Use a path that makes sense from the workspace in which your Playwright MCP server runs.
Save a screenshot to a specific folder
Pass a path as filename in the screenshot tool arguments. For example, this requests a full-page PNG at artifacts/homepage.png relative to the workspace root:

The path is illustrative: confirm that artifacts is an appropriate directory in your MCP workspace and that the MCP process can write there. The documentation does not establish that a requested subfolder will be created automatically.
- Open the browser session with your configured Playwright MCP client.
- Navigate to the page you want to capture using the browser navigation tool.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotand includefilename, such asscreenshots/result.png. - Choose a capture scope if needed: omit scope options for the viewport, set
fullPagefor the full scrollable page, or specify a target element when only that element is needed. - Check the directory relative to the MCP workspace root for the resulting file. The screenshot tool also returns the image inline in its tool response.
Full-page capture and target-element capture are alternatives; they cannot be combined in the same screenshot request. Use a CSS selector to capture one element, or use fullPage for the page. The scale option controls whether output is sized to CSS pixels or device pixels. Use the tool documentation for the precise argument schema supported by your client and installed server version (Playwright MCP screenshot parameters).
Save automatically named screenshots to a chosen directory
If you want a timestamped filename rather than a stable name in every call, leave out filename and set the server’s output directory. The project documents a command-line option and an environment-variable equivalent:

Configure the option where you launch the MCP server, not as an argument to browser_take_screenshot. For example, add --output-dir /path/to/screenshots to the Playwright MCP server command used in your MCP client’s server configuration, or set PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_OUTPUT_DIR in the server process environment. The exact configuration-file location and JSON shape depend on the MCP client, so preserve the command and environment syntax already used in that client’s configuration. Choose an absolute directory path that exists and is writable for the account running the server; the documentation names the settings but does not promise directory creation.

The tool uses an automatic name in the form page-{timestamp}.{png|jpeg|webp}. A filename that you do supply takes the other path: it resolves against the workspace root, not the output directory. This distinction is the first thing to check when a screenshot appears somewhere unexpected.
Choose an image format and capture scope
Playwright MCP screenshots support PNG, JPEG, and WebP. If you omit type, the extension in filename determines the format; if neither a type nor a filename extension specifies one, the default is PNG. For example, use filename: "screenshots/report.webp" for WebP or pass the type explicitly when you need the format to be unambiguous. Make the extension agree with the requested type to avoid confusion when other tools consume the file.

- Full page: set
fullPagewhen the image should include the full scrollable page rather than just the visible viewport. - One element: target a particular element when you need a component, chart, or panel rather than the whole page. Do not combine this with full-page capture.
- Pixel scale: choose CSS-pixel or device-pixel scaling according to whether the image is intended for layout inspection or higher-density output.
For lazy-loaded content, make sure the page has reached the state you intend to capture before taking the screenshot. The documented screenshot options define the capture scope and scale; application-specific loading behavior still depends on the page and browser session.

Troubleshoot files that are missing or misplaced
The file is not in the configured output directory
Check whether the screenshot call included filename. Explicit filenames resolve from the workspace root and are not redirected by --output-dir or PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_OUTPUT_DIR. If the call did include a filename, look under the workspace root instead.

The screenshot is in the wrong workspace folder
Relative paths are evaluated from the MCP workspace root, which can differ from the folder open in your editor or the directory on your local machine. Identify the workspace root used by the configured MCP server, then adjust the relative filename or use an appropriate absolute path. For a remote server, the filesystem receiving the file is the server’s environment; confirm how your host exposes or transfers those files.
No file appears after capture
Confirm that the call completed, that the output directory or filename’s parent directory exists, and that the server process has write permission. If using automatic names, verify that the server actually received the output-directory option or environment variable when it started. The inline image in the tool response can confirm that a capture was returned, but it does not by itself tell you which local folder the host exposes.

The image has an unexpected format or dimensions
Check the filename extension and the type option together. If neither determines a type, the default is PNG. For dimensions, verify whether you requested the viewport or full page, whether you targeted an element, and which pixel scale you selected. A full-page image may be substantially taller than the visible viewport.

The saved screenshot shows a banner, overlay, or incomplete content
Playwright MCP captures the browser state produced by your page and automation steps; its screenshot documentation does not describe automatic removal of consent banners or overlays. If the page has not finished rendering or lazy content has not loaded, wait for the relevant state before calling the screenshot tool. To interact with a page, use the browser’s structured snapshot rather than treating the screenshot as an interaction surface. Playwright’s guidance is: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact.” See the Playwright MCP snapshots documentation.
Reliability and workflow considerations
Use explicit filenames when downstream steps expect a stable path, such as a CI artifact upload or a named visual-regression input. Use an output directory with automatic names when retaining separate captures matters more than having a predictable filename; timestamped names avoid making every capture target the same named file. If a workflow needs deterministic output, select the name deliberately and manage any replacement or cleanup behavior in your own process.
For automation, verify the file from the same environment that runs the MCP server, particularly when the client connects to a container or remote host. Include the desired output folder in whatever artifact collection or synchronization process your environment uses. Playwright MCP’s path documentation establishes the workspace-root and output-directory rules, but does not determine how an individual client stores server configuration, mounts folders, or transfers files.
When the objective is page interaction—clicking controls, reading accessible element references, or continuing a browser task—keep using the Playwright MCP browser tools. A screenshot is a visual artifact, while browser_snapshot provides the structured accessibility representation used to identify elements for interaction.
