To save a PDF that a web action downloads, wait for the browser’s download event before triggering the action, then save the download to a deliberate path before its browser context closes. That is different from navigating to a PDF displayed inline or generating a new PDF by printing a page: Browser Library’s Save Page As Pdf is for the third case, not for saving the server’s PDF response.
First identify how the PDF reaches the browser
Check what the application does after the user clicks its PDF control. The right automation method depends on whether the browser downloads a file, displays a PDF inline, or remains on an ordinary page that you want to print.
| Behavior | What the saved file represents | Documented approach | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser download | The file delivered as a download by the server | Wait for the download event, then save it to a chosen path | Save it before the owning browser context closes. Playwright download documentation |
| Inline PDF navigation | The server’s PDF displayed in the browser viewer | Use a version-verified response-body API or an appropriate HTTP/API client | The reviewed Browser Library references do not establish a native keyword for saving raw inline-response bytes. Browser Library keyword reference |
| Page print | A newly generated PDF of rendered page content | Use Save Page As Pdf |
Browser Library documents support only in headless Chromium. Browser Library keyword reference |
These cases are not interchangeable. A successful print can still be the wrong artifact if the requirement is to validate the exact PDF bytes returned by the server.
Install Browser Library and its browser dependencies
Browser Library is a Robot Framework library powered by Playwright. The current official Robot Framework guide describes installing the Python package, installing Node.js, and running rfbrowser init to set up Node and browser dependencies. Its listed Python minimum is 3.7 or newer; check the guide and your project’s supported versions when setting up a new environment, since requirements can change. Robot Framework Browser Library

After installation, verify the available keywords and argument shapes against the Browser Library version installed in your project. The download event is a Playwright concept; do not assume illustrative or third-party keyword names are available in your version.
Save a PDF that the browser downloads
The sequence is: subscribe to the download event, trigger the UI action, await the event, save the download, and validate the saved file. Registering after the click risks missing a fast download. Saving explicitly also avoids relying on a browser-managed temporary file that disappears when its context is closed.
Use the Playwright download lifecycle
Playwright documents the pattern as page.waitForEvent('download') followed by download.saveAs(path). Downloaded files are associated with their browser context and are deleted when that context closes, so persist the file while the context is still active. Playwright download documentation

// Playwright JavaScript example, illustrating the underlying API pattern
const downloadPromise = page.waitForEvent('download');
await page.getByText('Download report').click();
const download = await downloadPromise;
await download.saveAs('/absolute/path/to/report.pdf');
This is a Playwright example, not Robot Framework syntax. To use it in a Robot Framework test, map the same lifecycle to the download and save keywords or library API available in your installed Browser Library release. Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose and check a deterministic destination
Use an explicit destination under your test’s output or artifact directory, and make the path unique when multiple tests may run concurrently. Once the save operation completes, check that the file exists and has plausible content for your test. For example, a PDF should not be an empty file; a stronger check can parse it with a PDF library or compare expected document text if that is part of the test’s purpose.
- Prefer a path derived from the test output directory rather than an untracked temporary browser path.
- Wait for the save operation to finish before closing the page, context, or browser.
- If the filename comes from the server, account for missing or unsafe filename characters rather than assuming it is a valid local path.
- Keep the saved file as a test artifact when diagnosing intermittent download failures.
Handle a PDF displayed inline
An inline PDF viewer displays the server’s document, but that navigation is not necessarily a browser download event. The reviewed Browser Library reference does not establish a built-in keyword for retrieving and writing the raw response body in this case. Do not substitute Save Page As Pdf: it prints rendered page content and does not mean “save the PDF response returned by the server.”

Use an HTTP/API client when the test needs the response bytes
If the purpose is to validate the exact server-returned file, request the document endpoint with an HTTP/API client and save its response body. For a protected endpoint, send the authorization and session credentials required by the application. Browser contexts isolate cookies and storage, so do not assume that a browser login automatically authenticates a separate HTTP client. Browser Library keyword reference
If the workflow requires browser-specific behavior, first verify whether your installed Browser Library version exposes a suitable response-body API for the navigation. Confirm that it returns the PDF response rather than viewer-generated content, and preserve the response before the relevant browser lifecycle ends. The available references do not settle a universal Browser Library-native recipe for this case.

Use Save Page As Pdf only when the desired artifact is a printout of the page currently rendered by the browser. The keyword saves the page as a PDF and returns the output path; a relative path resolves under ${OUTPUT_DIR}. The Browser Library reference documents this capability for Chromium in headless mode. Playwright’s page PDF API creates a PDF buffer from the rendered page; its documentation describes the result as: “Returns the PDF buffer.” It uses print CSS by default. If you need screen styling instead, change the page’s media emulation before creating the PDF. This still produces a print of the page, not the server’s original PDF response. Options that affect the generated printout
The Browser Library PDF settings can control path, paper format or dimensions, margins, landscape orientation, page ranges, scale, headers and footers, background graphics, and CSS page sizing. The documented scale range is 0.1 to 2; print backgrounds and tagged output default to false. These are output-format choices for the generated page PDF, not controls for capturing a server response. Check the keyword reference for the precise option names and defaults in your installed release. Browser Library keyword reference

The click succeeds but no download is captured
- Cause: The page opens the PDF inline rather than emitting a download event. Fix: Inspect the resulting navigation and response; use an HTTP/API client or a verified response-body API if you need the original bytes.
- Cause: The test starts waiting only after it clicks. Fix: Begin waiting for the event before the action that triggers it.
- Cause: The click did not reach the download control or the application returned an error page. Fix: Check the locator, application state, and resulting page or response before treating this as a file-save problem.
The file vanishes after the test or cannot be found
- Cause: The test relied on a browser-managed temporary download file, or closed its context before persisting the download. Fix: Save to the chosen destination before closing the context.
- Cause: The relative path resolves somewhere other than expected. Fix: Use an explicit output path and log or assert the resulting path.
- Cause: Parallel tests target the same filename. Fix: Give each test a unique destination.
The saved file is empty, invalid, or the wrong PDF
- Cause: The server returned an authentication page, error document, or a different response than expected. Fix: Verify the endpoint, status, content type, and credentials used by the request.
- Cause: The test printed the viewer or an HTML page instead of saving the server response. Fix: Separate response-byte validation from page printing and choose the method that matches the required artifact.
- Cause: The save operation has not completed when assertions run. Fix: Await the save and then check the file.
Save Page As Pdf fails or renders differently than expected
- Cause: The browser is not headless Chromium. Fix: Use the documented supported configuration for this keyword.
- Cause: Print CSS changes layout or omits screen-only styling. Fix: Use the desired media mode before generating the PDF and review the page’s print styles.
- Cause: Print settings produce unexpected pagination or backgrounds. Fix: Adjust the page range, scale, margins, orientation, background, or CSS page sizing, and confirm the output against the intended print layout.
Keep the test reliable and economical
Download tests are more reliable when they distinguish application behavior from file-system behavior: confirm that the action produces the expected kind of response, save before teardown, and validate the artifact after saving. Keep context setup explicit when downloads are part of the test; Playwright’s example enables downloads through the browser context. Playwright download documentation
For large or intermittent files, avoid assertions that only check a transient path or assume the server always responds instantly. Use the test runner’s normal timeout policy, preserve useful artifacts on failure, and ensure cleanup does not delete a file before downstream checks finish. No performance or success-rate figures are established by the cited documentation; tune timeouts to the application and test environment rather than relying on a universal number.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does “save as PDF” in Browser Library download the PDF returned by the server?
No. Save Page As Pdf generates a PDF from rendered page content; it does not save the server’s PDF response.
Can an inline PDF be saved with a browser download event?
Not unless the application actually emits a download. Inline PDF navigation is a different flow; retrieve the response through a suitable HTTP/API client or a verified version-specific response-body API.
Does Browser Library’s PDF keyword work in headed Chromium?
The documented support is Chromium in headless mode; consult the keyword reference for the version installed in your project.
