On Windows 10 or 11, take the webpage screenshot with Snipping Tool, open it in Paint, and save a new copy in JPEG/JPG format if that option is available. A .jpg or .jpeg filename extension identifies a JPEG file; changing a PNG’s extension alone does not convert it.
Save a website screenshot as a JPEG
- Open the website and arrange the page as you want it to appear. Scroll to the relevant content and close anything you do not want in the capture.
- Press Windows key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay. Choose a capture mode—such as rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform—and make the screenshot. - Open the capture in Snipping Tool, then select Edit > Edit with Paint.
- In Paint, open the save or Save As format choices. Select JPEG or JPG if offered, choose where to save it, and use a new filename. The precise menu wording and available formats can vary by Windows or Paint version; Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions confirm the Paint handoff, but do not enumerate Paint’s format choices for every build.
- Check that the saved copy ends in
.jpgor.jpeg. If File Explorer hides extensions, turn them on via View > Show > File name extensions. Microsoft lists.jpgand.jpegas JPEG extensions and.pngas the PNG extension: Common file name extensions in Windows.
JPEG or PNG: which should you keep?
JPEG is suited to colorful pictures, while PNG supports transparency and is suited to graphics, according to Microsoft’s overview of image formats: Save a picture or other graphic as a separate file. For a screenshot that is mostly webpage text, icons, and sharp interface edges, JPEG may make edges look soft or introduce visible artifacts because it is a lossy format. Inspect the saved result before deleting the PNG original. Keep PNG when sharp text or transparency matters more; the cited guidance does not quantify the file-size or quality difference for this screenshot workflow.

Troubleshooting
- The saved image is still PNG: Confirm that you selected JPEG/JPG in Paint’s format choices. Renaming
.pngto.jpgdoes not convert the image. - JPEG is not offered: The retrieved Microsoft instructions do not guarantee that every Paint installation offers the same formats. Check the format choices in your editor; do not assume a renamed PNG is a JPEG.
- The image looks soft or text edges are rough: JPEG compression can affect sharp edges. Keep or resave a PNG copy if the result is not clear enough.
- You cannot tell the actual format from the filename: Show file name extensions in File Explorer and verify the ending is
.jpgor.jpeg. An extension is a useful check, not a substitute for selecting JPEG when saving.
