To keep a website browsable offline, make a local mirror with a site-copying tool such as HTTrack, then inspect the crawl log and open saved pages from your computer. A mirror is not a perfect snapshot: content that appears only after JavaScript runs may be missing. If you need a preservation archive for replay, HTTrack can also create WARC output alongside the mirror.
Choose the kind of offline copy you need
“Website archive” can mean a folder of linked files you can browse without a connection, or a preservation package intended for later replay. Decide which outcome matters before starting:
- For ordinary offline browsing: create a local mirror. HTTrack downloads pages and related files into a directory and rewrites retained links so you can navigate the copy locally.
- For preservation and replay: create a mirror and, if needed, add WARC output. HTTrack documents WARC as an additional output, not a replacement for the browsable folder. It also documents optional CDXJ indexing and WACZ packaging for replay tools such as ReplayWeb.page.
- For one page only: use the browser’s save-page feature if you only need an individual page, rather than crawling a whole site. A single saved page will not provide a complete site-wide copy.

Make a scoped mirror with HTTrack
Install the current build
Get HTTrack from its official download page and verify the listing for your operating system. The official pages accessed October 7, 2026, did not agree on the newest version: the homepage announced 3.50-5, while the download listing displayed 3.50-2. Check the live platform listing rather than assuming either number is current.

Set the starting URL and destination
In the graphical interface, create a project, enter the site’s starting URL, and choose a destination folder. The command-line guide gives this basic example:
httrack https://example.com/ --path mydirReplace the example address and folder with the site and local destination you want. The documented default stays on the same host and follows links to any depth. A redirect from www to the apex domain, or from HTTP to HTTPS, can move a crawl to another host, so check that the URLs you need remain within scope. Subdomains and content hosted on a CDN may not be included in a same-host crawl.

Check the crawl and test the saved copy
- When the crawl finishes, open the project log and review errors. HTTrack’s logs identify URLs that were refused, redirected, or filtered.
- Open the saved start page from the destination folder, then test several other pages and their images or files.
- Disconnect from the internet and try those local pages again. This helps distinguish a genuinely saved asset from one that was still being loaded online.
HTTrack stores logs and cache files with the output. Keeping the log with the mirror can help explain why a page or file is absent.
Understand what the mirror may miss
HTTrack parses HTML and CSS but does not execute JavaScript. If a page builds its links or loads content only after a script runs, the crawler may not discover or save it. The documentation notes that there is no setting that can make the crawler find a URL absent from static HTML or CSS.

As a result, a local copy may not preserve every interactive feature, login-only page, video, or dynamic application. Treat the mirror as a useful copy of what the crawl could reach, not a guarantee of a complete, functioning clone.
Update an existing mirror carefully
HTTrack can update a prior mirror or resume an interrupted download. During an update, files that are no longer selected by the current crawl may be purged. If the run could be partial—for example, because of an interruption or changed scope—use the documented no-purge option so files not rediscovered in that run are not removed. Check the command-line guide for the option syntax that applies to your invocation.

Use the copy responsibly and protect your destination
- Respect the site’s rules, avoid placing unnecessary load on its server, and get authorization where appropriate. HTTrack’s documentation points users to responsible-use guidance; legal requirements vary by jurisdiction and situation.
- HTTrack’s guide says it does not verify TLS certificates. Using an HTTPS address with the tool does not mean the tool independently authenticates the site being copied.
- Choose a destination with enough free space for the site you intend to mirror. Removable storage, including an external drive, is optional; the documentation does not specify a required capacity or require an SSD.
