To save a webpage picture as a JPEG, first try the original file: right-click the image in Chrome or Edge and choose Save Image As. If the downloaded file is WebP or PNG, open it in an editor and use Save As or Export As with JPEG selected. When the site blocks direct downloading, use a browser screenshot as a fallback, knowing that it captures rendered pixels rather than the source file.
Choose the method that matches your goal
The best method depends on whether you need the website’s original asset or merely a picture of what appears on screen.

Save the original image in Chrome or Edge
1. Use Save Image As
- Open the page containing the picture.
- Right-click the image itself, not the surrounding page, and select Save Image As.
- Choose a folder and inspect the proposed filename and extension.
- Click Save. Do not change an extension merely by typing a different suffix; the file’s actual encoding may remain unchanged.
If the browser identifies the source as JPEG, the filename normally ends in .jpg or .jpeg, and no conversion is necessary. If it ends in .webp or .png, continue with the conversion steps below.
2. If the context menu has no image-save command
The visible picture may be a CSS background, an image inside a link, a protected viewer, or an overlay. Try opening the image in a new tab first: right-click and choose the browser’s open-image option if it is available, then use Save Image As in that tab. If the image still cannot be downloaded, use the screenshot method rather than pretending that a renamed file is a JPEG.

Convert WebP or PNG to JPEG correctly
Why a “JPG” download may actually be WebP
WebP is natively supported by major browsers, and many sites deliver it automatically to reduce transfer size. The picture may look identical to a JPEG in the page, but the downloaded bytes and extension can be WebP. Renaming photo.webp to photo.jpg does not convert it and can make other programs reject the file.
Export with an image editor
- Open the downloaded WebP or PNG in an editor that supports that source format.
- Choose File and then Save As, Export As, or the equivalent command.
- Select JPEG or JPG as the format.
- Choose a quality setting if the editor offers one, then save a new file.
- Keep the original WebP or PNG until you have checked the JPEG.
Applications such as Photoshop document both saving and exporting images as JPEG. Other editors use similar commands, but labels and quality controls differ. JPEG is lossy, so a conversion can soften fine detail or introduce artifacts. PNG is lossless and is usually the better format for transparency, diagrams, text-heavy graphics and pixel-precise screenshots; JPEG is generally more suitable when a destination requires it or when a photographic image benefits from a smaller file.
Check the result
- Confirm that the new filename ends in
.jpgor.jpeg. - Open it in a second viewer or browser to verify that it is readable.
- Inspect edges, small text and gradients for compression damage.
- Make sure transparency was not important: JPEG does not preserve an alpha-transparent background.
Use Firefox’s screenshot when direct download fails
Firefox includes a screenshot command that can download a selected area or the visible page as an image. The exact menu placement can vary with Firefox version, but the command is available from the page context menu or the browser’s screenshot controls.

- Display the image at the size you need.
- Open Firefox’s screenshot feature.
- Select the visible image or draw a region around it.
- Choose the download option to save the capture as an image file.
- If the result is not JPEG, open it in an editor and export it as JPEG.
A screenshot is a new raster image. It does not retain the original asset’s full resolution, embedded metadata or transparency, and its dimensions are tied to the rendered page or selected region. Use it when access to the source file matters less than capturing what a visitor can see.

Touch and hold the image, then choose the browser’s download, save or share action. Labels differ between mobile browsers and operating systems, so there is no single universal menu name. Check the downloaded file in the device’s Files or Downloads app. If it is WebP or PNG, open it in an editor that can export JPEG; if the page prevents downloading, take a screenshot and crop the image before converting it.
Capture a full webpage or a rendered element
A normal image download targets one asset. If you need a hero section, a card, a chart rendered by JavaScript, or an entire page, a browser capture extension or screenshot service can output a rendered PNG or JPEG. Check an extension’s availability and privacy behavior before installing it. Full-page captures may require the page to finish loading lazy images, and animated or interactive content can differ between captures.

Troubleshooting
The downloaded file is .webp
That is a format issue, not necessarily an error. Open the WebP in an editor and export a new JPEG. Keep the original so you can retry at a different quality level.

There is no Save Image As option
Open the image in a new tab and try again. If the image is drawn by a canvas, supplied as a CSS background or protected by a viewer, use a screenshot and convert the capture if necessary.

The JPEG looks blurry or blocky
You are seeing either screenshot scaling or JPEG recompression. Start from the original file whenever possible, avoid enlarging a screenshot, and select a higher quality setting during export. Keep the source WebP or PNG as your archival copy.
The image has a black or solid background
The source may have transparency that JPEG cannot store. Retain PNG or another transparency-capable format, or place the image on the intended background before exporting a JPEG.
The page is blank or incomplete in a capture
Wait for the page’s content and lazy images to load before capturing. For automated captures, wait for a selector, a delay or network idle; blocking scripts or resources can also remove content required for rendering.
The downloaded image is not yours to reuse
Saving a file does not grant copyright or reuse permission. Follow the image owner’s license and the law that applies to your use and jurisdiction.
