If you mean the entire rendered page, that is a different task: an AVIF is an image, not an offline copy of a webpage. The available guidance does not establish a standard browser command for saving a whole page directly as AVIF.
For a JPEG or PNG you already have, convert the image with Squoosh or the command-line encoder avifenc. For a whole-page picture, capture the page first, then convert the resulting image to AVIF.
First decide what you want to save
A webpage is a document that can contain text, layout, scripts and many image resources. AVIF is an image format. A page may display an AVIF image, but saving that individual image is not the same as saving the rendered page as one picture or preserving the page as an offline document.

Save an AVIF image that is already on the page

Right-click the image, or use the equivalent image context menu on your device, and choose Save image as… where that action is available. The web.dev guide “Serving AVIF Images” demonstrates this workflow for an AVIF image.

Choose a destination and save the file. Inspect the resulting filename and extension. A file ending in
.avifis a useful first check, but if the format matters, verify the file itself with an image viewer or format-inspection tool. -
If you cannot find the image-saving action, or the saved file is not AVIF, use the conversion workflow below if you can obtain the original image. Browser menus, site behavior and format handling vary by browser and version.
A site may offer more than one image source. MDN explains that HTML’s <picture> element can provide alternative image sources and a fallback. Therefore, the file a browser saves is not guaranteed to be the AVIF variant simply because one is available to some visitors. The page’s displayed appearance alone does not establish the downloaded file’s format.

web.dev identifies two conversion options: Squoosh, a visual tool, and avifenc, a command-line program that uses libavif. Its guidance specifically describes converting PNG and JPEG images with avifenc. Choose a visual interface if you prefer to inspect an image while working; choose a command-line tool if it fits an existing image-processing workflow.

Use Squoosh
Open the source image in Squoosh, select AVIF as the output format, review the result, and download the converted file. The resulting AVIF is a converted image, not a snapshot of the webpage where the source image appeared. The cited guidance does not establish a universally best quality setting: inspect the output at the size and detail level that matter for your use.
Use avifenc
Install and consult the version of avifenc available for your system, then follow that version’s command-line help for input, output and encoding options. The web.dev guide identifies it as a PNG/JPEG-to-AVIF converter using libavif, but the exact installation steps and option behavior depend on your operating system and installed version. Do not assume that a command or flag documented for one build applies unchanged to another.

Compare the converted image with the source at the viewing size that matters; encoding choices can affect visual appearance.

Keep the original until you have checked the result. Conversion should not be treated as a way to preserve the source page’s text or layout.

Save an entire rendered page as an AVIF image
For a full-page AVIF, think of the task as two steps: capture the webpage as an image, then encode that image as AVIF. The browser image context-menu workflow described above saves one image resource; it does not capture the page. The cited format guidance does not verify a built-in, browser-wide full-page-to-AVIF procedure, so exact capture controls depend on whichever screenshot workflow you choose.

Use a dedicated screenshot or browser-capture workflow to create an image of the rendered page. Check whether it captures only the visible viewport or the full scrollable page; these are different results.

Save the capture in a format accepted by your chosen AVIF converter, such as PNG or JPEG.

Convert that screenshot image to AVIF with Squoosh or
avifenc, then verify the output.
Before converting, consider whether a single image is really the right deliverable. A screenshot is a fixed visual record: text is generally not retained as page text, links do not remain clickable, and interactive elements are not preserved as working controls. If you need to read or revisit the page offline, choose an archive or document format instead of calling an image file an offline webpage.

AVIF support is version-sensitive. MDN lists the media type as image/avif and cautions that browser support for media types varies; Can I Use maintains a browser- and version-sensitive compatibility table. Check the current compatibility information for the browser and version you actually use rather than relying on a timeless support percentage.

The saved file has another extension: the site may have delivered a fallback image, or the browser may have saved a different available source. Check the actual format and convert an available JPEG or PNG if AVIF is required.

The context menu does not offer “Save image as…”: the browser, device, page or element may not expose that action in the way you expect. The documented web.dev example does not guarantee identical menus everywhere. Use an accessible source image and a converter, or a separate screenshot workflow for a page capture.

The image will not open in another app: the app may not support AVIF. Try a viewer with AVIF support or convert the file to a format the receiving application accepts.

The output is not the whole page: image saving targets an individual image, not the rendered page. Capture the page separately, then convert the captured image.
What AVIF does—and does not—preserve
MDN describes AVIF as an image format that encodes AV1 bitstreams in the HEIF container. It also documents how <picture> can offer alternative image sources and fallbacks. Those format details explain why a webpage can display one image while a browser or site supplies another compatible source; they do not make AVIF a webpage archive format.

Use AVIF when the required output is an image and the people or software receiving it can handle AVIF. Use a screenshot followed by conversion when you need the page’s rendered appearance as one image. Use an archive or document workflow when you need more than pixels—such as selectable page text, links, or a portable record of the document.

Can I convert a PDF of a webpage directly to AVIF?
The cited guidance establishes image conversion from PNG and JPEG, not a PDF-to-AVIF workflow. Export or capture the needed page content to an image format accepted by your converter, then convert that image.
Is AVIF the same thing as AV1?
No. MDN describes AVIF as a format that encodes AV1 bitstreams in the HEIF container; AV1 is the bitstream encoding, not the name of the complete image format.
