Windows: capture with Snipping Tool, choose Save, and select PNG in the file-type menu when it appears. Mac: press Shift-Command-5, set the destination in Options, and on supported macOS Tahoe 26 or later choose SDR (Most Compatible), which saves PNG rather than HDR’s HEIF.
What PNG changes—and what it does not
PNG is a lossless image format commonly used when text, interface edges, or exact pixel detail must remain sharp. Saving a screenshot as PNG does not improve a blurry capture or recover information that was never captured; it determines the format written to disk.
On Windows and macOS, you can create a PNG without installing screenshot hardware. Windows provides Snipping Tool, while macOS provides the Screenshot utility. The important difference is how each system exposes format control: Windows may show PNG in the Save dialog, while newer macOS versions use a dynamic-range choice.
Save a screenshot as PNG on Windows
1. Open Snipping Tool
Open the Start menu, search for Snipping Tool, and launch it. Microsoft’s documented capture modes include Rectangle Capture, Freeform Capture, and Window Capture. (The same protocol documentation also lists screen recording and optional auto-save.)

2. Choose the area to capture
- Rectangle: drag a rectangular region around the content you need.
- Freeform: draw an irregular outline when a rectangle would include unwanted content.
- Window: select a specific application window rather than manually tracing its bounds.
Take the capture. It opens in the Snipping Tool editor, where you can review or mark it up before saving.
3. Save as PNG
- In the Snipping Tool editor, select Save (the save icon) or use the editor’s save command.
- Choose a folder and enter a filename.
- If the Save dialog provides a File type or format menu, select PNG.
- Confirm the save. The resulting file should have a
.pngextension.
If no format menu appears, keep the extension and format offered by Snipping Tool rather than merely renaming the file. Changing .jpg or another extension to .png does not convert the underlying image data.
4. Understand Windows auto-save
Snipping Tool supports an optional auto-save feature. Microsoft documents that an integration requesting auto-save still follows the user’s Snipping Tool settings, so automatic saving may be disabled even when the integration supports it. If a capture appears only in the editor, use Save manually or review Snipping Tool’s settings and enable auto-save there.

2. Select the capture scope
- Capture Entire Screen for the complete display.
- Capture Selected Window for one application window.
- Capture Selected Portion for a custom rectangle.
3. Set the save destination
Select Options in the Screenshot controls, then choose the destination. Apple says the default location is the desktop and that you can change it to another available location. Set this before capturing so you do not have to move the file afterward.
4. Select PNG on macOS Tahoe 26 or later
On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, open Options and choose the dynamic-range setting:

Apple’s Screenshot documentation describes SDR as “standard dynamic range using the PNG image format” and HDR as “high dynamic range using the HEIF image format.” Select SDR (Most Compatible), capture the screen, and macOS saves the PNG in the destination selected under Options.
If your Mac does not show SDR/HDR
The available controls depend on the macOS version and hardware. Apple’s developer documentation describes a screenshot as having a “representation of the screenshot as PNG image data,” but that statement is about the screenshot representation provided by Apple’s frameworks, not a promise that every export dialog has the same controls. If your version offers a format selector, choose PNG; otherwise inspect the file’s actual format after saving instead of relying on the filename alone.

Windows and Mac: which method should you use?

For a one-off image, use the built-in tool on the operating system you are using. For repeatable website captures, an automated browser-based service avoids manually positioning windows and selecting files.
Check that the file is really a PNG
- Confirm the filename ends in
.png, then open the file in an image viewer that displays format or file information. - On Windows, reopen the image from the folder where you saved it and use the file’s properties to inspect its type.
- On macOS, select the file in Finder and use Get Info to check its kind and filename extension.
If the image viewer reports JPEG, HEIF, or another format, renaming the extension is not enough. Re-capture with PNG selected, or use an image conversion application that explicitly exports PNG.
Common problems and fixes
Windows offers no PNG option
The Snipping Tool version or save path may be using a simplified dialog. Save the capture first, inspect the resulting file type, and use an image editor’s explicit Export or Save as PNG command if the original output is not PNG. Do not trust an extension-only rename.
The Windows capture did not save automatically
Auto-save is optional and respects Snipping Tool settings. Open Snipping Tool’s settings and enable the option if available, or save from the editor after every capture.

The Mac file is HEIF instead of PNG
HDR was selected. Reopen Shift-Command-5, choose Options → SDR (Most Compatible), and capture again. HDR intentionally produces HEIF on supported macOS Tahoe 26 or later.
The file is not in the folder you expected
On Windows, the Save dialog determines the destination for that capture. On Mac, Screenshot uses the location selected under Options; if you never changed it, check the desktop first.
The screenshot contains the wrong area
Use Window capture when you need an application window’s bounds, Rectangle or Selected Portion for a precise region, and Full Screen or Entire Screen only when everything visible is required. Repeating a capture with the correct scope is safer than cropping away information later.

- Use a selected-region or window capture when exact dimensions matter; full-screen captures include everything currently visible.
- Set the destination before a batch of Mac captures so files do not scatter across folders.
- For Windows automation, verify auto-save in Snipping Tool settings rather than assuming an integration enabled it.
- For websites, record the response verdict and billing headers so failed or cached requests are distinguishable from clean captures.
- Keep the original capture until you have verified the exported PNG opens correctly in the application that will consume it.

Does changing a screenshot’s extension to .png convert it?
