Yes—a portable power station can run a refrigerator during an outage if its continuous AC output and surge capability meet the refrigerator’s electrical requirements, and its battery has enough usable energy for the changing load. Check both manuals before connecting the appliance, monitor the station while it runs, and verify refrigerator temperature separately: a charged battery does not prove food is safe.
Check that the power station can start and run the refrigerator
A refrigerator’s power draw changes as its compressor cycles on and off. Starting the compressor can require a brief surge beyond the refrigerator’s steady running demand; defrost cycles and opening the door can also change the load. A 2018 U.S. Department of Energy-hosted paper describes these variable load patterns, but its examples do not establish a universal startup multiplier for household refrigerators (DOE-hosted refrigeration paper).
Before connecting the refrigerator, compare its electrical requirements with both power-station ratings:
- Continuous AC output: the amount of power the station can supply on an ongoing basis.
- Surge output: the higher short-term power it can provide for a starting load. Check whether the manufacturer specifies how long the surge rating is supported.
Find the refrigerator’s requirements on its rating label and in its manual; consult the power station’s manual for the AC ratings and operating limits. Include other devices connected to the station in your assessment, since they also draw from its output.

For example, EcoFlow’s DELTA 2 manual lists 1,800 W total pure sine wave AC output and 2,700 W surge (DELTA 2 User Manual). Those figures describe that model only; they do not establish that it will start or run every refrigerator.
If the refrigerator will not start, shuts off, or causes overload protection to activate, stop and consult both manuals. Do not repeatedly force restarts.

Estimate runtime without treating watt-hours as a guarantee
A power station’s capacity in watt-hours (Wh) describes stored energy, not a guaranteed number of hours for a particular refrigerator. Runtime depends on the appliance’s changing load, operating conditions, power-conversion losses, station settings, and any other connected devices. The sources cited here do not support a reliable blanket runtime for an arbitrary household refrigerator.
Use the refrigerator’s energy information and the power-station manufacturer’s runtime guidance, if available, to make an estimate. During an outage, check the station’s displayed battery level regularly. EcoFlow specifically recommends battery checks during continuous refrigerator use in the DELTA 2 manual; follow equivalent guidance from your own station’s manufacturer (DELTA 2 User Manual).

Check timeout settings and follow placement instructions
A station’s energy-saving settings can interrupt power even when the refrigerator still needs it. In the DELTA 2 manual, EcoFlow warns that an intermittent load such as a refrigerator can trigger the AC idle timeout. For continuous refrigerator use, the manual instructs owners to set the AC timeout to “never” in the EcoFlow app and check the battery regularly (DELTA 2 User Manual). This is specific to that model. For another station, check its manual for an equivalent AC timeout or eco setting.
Follow the exact model’s instructions for operating temperature and placement. Keep ventilation areas clear, and do not use wet equipment, damaged cords, or damaged wiring. There is no single clearance or operating-temperature rule established here for every power station.

Monitor food temperature separately from battery level
A power station can help keep a refrigerator running, but its battery indicator cannot tell you whether food stayed cold enough. Keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible and use an appliance thermometer to check the temperature. FDA guidance recommends keeping refrigerator temperatures at or below 40°F; its page also says an unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about four hours during an outage (FDA: Power Outages—Key Tips for Consumers About Food Safety; publication date not stated on the page). FDA also recommends using thermometers and checking temperatures (FDA: Refrigerator Thermometers).
FDA guidance says to discard perishable food that has been above 40°F for two hours or more. Do not use smell or appearance to decide whether food is safe; follow the FDA’s food-safety guidance when temperature history is uncertain (FDA: Power Outages—Key Tips for Consumers About Food Safety).

Prepare a backup if the outage outlasts the battery
If a practical battery estimate will not cover the outage, plan another way to keep food cold rather than relying on the station indefinitely. The FDA recommends preparing coolers, frozen gel packs, and dry ice as appropriate for longer outages. Follow current FDA instructions for handling dry ice and protecting food (FDA: Protect Food and Water During Hurricanes and Other Storms).
What to compare when choosing a power station
Use the refrigerator’s own requirements—not a generic refrigerator wattage—to evaluate a station. Compare the following details in the appliance and station documentation:
