Remove AWS Network Firewall only after you have moved traffic off its endpoints and confirmed the replacement routes. The safe order is to inventory firewall and endpoint-association mappings, record current routes, reroute traffic, remove endpoint route references, remove associations, disable logging, and delete the firewall. Then remove policies, rule groups, or TLS inspection configurations only if no other resource uses them.
Before you delete the firewall
Plan this as a network-routing change first and a resource cleanup second. Deleting the firewall before changing routes can disrupt traffic or remove inspection unexpectedly. Choose the intended replacement path for your network design—such as routing directly to the former destination or through another inspection layer—and account for ingress and egress, Availability Zone coverage, route-table ownership, and monitoring.
AWS’s getting-started tutorial shows one simple internet-gateway architecture; it is not a universal route plan. Record the current route-table configuration so you can compare it with the intended end state. See AWS’s Network Firewall getting-started tutorial and the firewall settings guide.
- Identify firewall subnet mappings and endpoints in every Availability Zone where the firewall is deployed.
- Inventory VPC endpoint associations as well as the firewall in its primary VPC. Associations can create endpoints in other VPCs.
- Record which route tables target each firewall endpoint and determine what each route should target after removal.
- Check who owns each endpoint association and route table; coordinate changes with the owner where needed.
Move traffic off the firewall endpoints
Inspect the relevant route tables across the firewall’s Availability Zones. Replace routes that target firewall endpoint IDs with routes for your chosen replacement path. Validate the intended routing design rather than copying a tutorial’s routes into a differently structured VPC.

For the simple internet-gateway example in AWS’s tutorial, the cleanup restores the internet-gateway and subnet route tables to their pre-firewall configuration and removes the endpoint route-table configuration. AWS’s DeleteFirewall API reference states: “When the route tables no longer use the firewall endpoints, you can remove the firewall safely.” Treat that as the central safety check: no route table should still depend on an endpoint you are about to remove.
Remove VPC endpoint associations
For each association, inspect its subnet mapping and the associated endpoint’s route-table references. Remove those routes before deleting the association. If an association belongs to another account or party, coordinate with its owner; AWS’s DeleteVpcEndpointAssociation API reference directs users to ask the owner to delete an association they do not own.

Do not overlook associations simply because they are in a different VPC from the firewall’s primary VPC. AWS’s firewall deletion procedure covers endpoint associations and their removal.
Disable logging, then delete the firewall
AWS requires logging to be disabled before deletion. In the console, open VPC → Network Firewall → Firewalls, select the firewall, open Firewall details, edit Logging, deselect every configured log type, and save. The documented types are Flow, Alert, and TLS; see Updating a AWS Network Firewall logging configuration.

Once routes no longer point to the firewall endpoints, endpoint associations are removed, and logging is disabled, delete the firewall in the console or through the API. AWS says console deletion can take a few minutes, without specifying an exact duration. For API or CLI deletion, delete protection must be false. The DeleteFirewall operation cannot be reverted, so disable protection only when you are ready to perform the planned deletion. Clean up only resources that are no longer shared
Deleting the firewall does not mean every related policy or rule resource is safe to delete. A firewall policy may be used by other firewalls, and rule groups or TLS inspection configurations may be referenced by policies. Check those references before cleanup and delete only resources confirmed to be unused. AWS usually detects references, but its guidance notes that detection can rarely miss one; consult Deleting a firewall policy and Firewall settings.

Verify the final network state
- Confirm the firewall and intended endpoint associations have been removed.
- Check route tables in every affected Availability Zone against the intended design; no route should still target a removed firewall endpoint.
- Confirm the replacement path provides the inspection and monitoring your network requires.
- Remove only firewall-specific policies, rule groups, or TLS inspection configurations that have no remaining references.
AWS’s tutorial cleanup removes its tutorial-owned firewall and related resources to avoid charges for those tutorial resources, but the cited procedure does not specify a universal billing stop time.
