You can use a PSU with only 6-pin PCIe connectors for a graphics card that needs an 8-pin plug only if the exact GPU and PSU documentation supports that setup and the PSU meets the card’s power requirements. An adapter changes the plug shape; it does not add power capacity. If you cannot verify compatibility, replace the PSU with one that has the required native PCIe connectors.

Check the exact graphics-card requirements first

Connector and power requirements differ among graphics cards, and board-partner versions can differ from a reference design. Find the exact manufacturer and model, then consult that card’s specifications and installation manual for its auxiliary connector type and count, recommended system PSU rating, and any adapter instructions. NVIDIA’s setup guidance says to “Check your power supply,” and its product pages illustrate why requirements must be checked model by model: RTX 4070 family specifications and GeForce graphics card comparison.

Use the specifications for the specific board-partner card you own rather than assuming that a reference-card specification applies to every version.

Check the PSU label and manual

Identify the PSU’s exact model and check its own label and manual. Confirm its native PCIe cable and connector configuration, the rating of the 12 V rail supplying the GPU or adapter, and any relevant PSU or rail limits. Compare those details with the GPU’s connector and system-power requirements. NVIDIA recommends using a PSU with all required connectors and advises checking the supplying 12 V rail and staying within connector limits when adapters are involved: NVIDIA Power Adapters — Power Guidelines for Workstation Products.

Cable Matters 2-Pack 6-Pin to 8-Pin PCIe GPU Power Adapter Cable, 4 Inches
  • 6 Pin to 8 Pin PCIe Adapter: Connect a 6-pin male PCIe power plug from a compatible power supply to the 8-pin PCIe power input on a supported graphics card. Confirm the connector types before ordering
  • For Compatible Low-Power GPUs: Use the PCIe power adapter only when the power supply and its 6-pin PCIe connection provide sufficient power for the graphics card. Check the documented power requirements of the PSU and GPU before installation
  • 8 Pin to 6 Pin PCIe Adapter: The GPU power adapter changes a 6-pin PCIe connection into an 8-pin connector but does not increase the PSU wattage, current capacity, or available power. It is not suitable for bypassing GPU power requirements
  • Secure PCIe Connections: The 8-pin male connector features a locking latch, while the 6-pin female connector uses a keyed housing to support proper alignment and help prevent accidental disconnection
  • Convenient 2-Pack: Use the two PCIe adapter cables with separate compatible systems or keep one as a spare. Compatible with select Gigabyte, Radeon, and Sapphire graphics cards with an 8-pin PCIe power input. Check the GPU power requirements before use. Not compatible with CPU/EPS 8-pin ports

When a dual-6-pin-to-8-pin adapter may be appropriate

NVIDIA’s workstation power guidance describes combining two PCIe 6-pin connectors into one 8-pin connector, with a specific condition: the supplying 12 V rail must be rated at least 18 A. That figure applies to the adapter configuration described in that workstation guidance; it is not a universal compatibility rule for consumer graphics cards or every PSU. See NVIDIA Workstation Power Guidelines.

Use an adapter only if the documentation for the exact GPU and PSU supports the configuration and the PSU can meet the card’s requirements without exceeding its connector or rail limits. The existence of two 6-pin plugs, by itself, does not establish that the PSU or adapter is suitable.

Do not substitute a CPU/EPS cable

CPU/EPS 8-pin and PCIe 8-pin connectors can look similar, but their pin assignments differ. Use the PSU cable specified for the GPU’s PCIe socket; do not force or substitute a CPU/EPS cable based on appearance. NVIDIA documents the distinction in its workstation power guidance.

Connect the card according to its manual

Follow the exact graphics card’s installation instructions and make sure the correct plug is firmly seated. NVIDIA’s RTX Ada Generation professional graphics cards Quick Start Guide specifically instructs users in that product context to use only the included NVIDIA power connector adapter and to firmly plug the dongle into the card: RTX Ada Generation Professional Graphics Cards Quick Start Guide. Do not treat that guide’s included-adapter instruction as a rule for unrelated cards; follow your own card’s documentation.

When to replace the PSU

Choose a suitably specified PSU rather than relying on an unsupported conversion if the card manual requires connectors your PSU does not provide, the PSU cannot meet the card’s recommended system-power requirement, or its rail and connector limits do not support the proposed adapter. Compare the options against the same four requirements:

  • Connectors and connector count required by the exact GPU.
  • Native PCIe connector count provided by the PSU.
  • Supplying 12 V rail rating and PSU limits.
  • System power recommended by the GPU manufacturer.

NVIDIA’s power-adapter guidance recommends a PSU with all required connectors. A replacement should be selected against the exact GPU and system requirements, not merely because it has an 8-pin plug.
