Compressed air is safe only for specific jobs that a manufacturer explicitly allows. Dell supports it for computer air vents, and Microsoft supports it for dust and debris between keys on its keyboards. Apple says not to use it on iPhone, and Dell says not to use it on the monitor families covered by its monitor guidance. Before you clean anything, find your exact device in the manufacturer’s documentation, confirm that compressed air is permitted for that part, and then follow the steps for that device.
Check the manufacturer’s rule for your device first
Manufacturer guidance differs by product and by part. The table below lists only the rules stated in the manufacturer pages cited in this article. Where a manufacturer’s page does not address a step, the table says so.
| Device or component | Manufacturer | Compressed air | Power or battery step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer air vents | Dell | Permitted for vents | Turn off, unplug, disconnect cables, remove applicable batteries |
| Keyboard surface and gaps between keys | Microsoft | Permitted between keys | Disconnect the keyboard or remove its batteries |
| iPhone | Apple | Prohibited | Not stated on Apple’s cleaning page |
| Dell and Alienware monitor families covered by Dell’s monitor article | Dell | Prohibited | Not stated in Dell’s monitor article |
Computer vents: the Dell procedure
Dell’s general maintenance guidance says blocked vents restrict airflow and can cause overheating. It does not give a numeric threshold for how much blockage is harmful, so treat clean vents as routine maintenance rather than a fix for a specific temperature problem.
- Turn off the computer and unplug it.
- Disconnect all cables and peripherals.
- Remove batteries from any device that has them and that Dell’s instructions identify as applicable.
- Hold the can at a 90-degree angle, 6 to 8 inches from the vents. This distance comes from Dell’s vent-cleaning video for Dell computers. It is not a universal distance for other products or other brands of can.
- Direct the air only at the designated vents, not at the rest of the case or at ports.
Keyboards: the Microsoft procedure
Microsoft’s keyboard guidance covers the keyboard surface and the gaps between keys. It treats compressed air as a targeted tool for debris between keys, and it names a dusting-brush vacuum as its alternative.

Devices where compressed air is off limits
Two manufacturer rules are explicit prohibitions, and they apply regardless of how careful you are with the can.
- iPhone. Apple says not to use compressed air. Apple recommends a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth for cleaning.
- Dell and Alienware monitors covered by Dell’s monitor article. Dell says not to use compressed air. Dell recommends a soft cloth that is only lightly dampened with water.
For any surface where the maker calls for a cloth, keep moisture out of openings and never spray liquid directly onto the equipment.

When to stop and choose another method
- The manual does not mention compressed air for the part you are cleaning. Do not use it.
- The device is a phone or a display. Follow the cloth instruction from the maker, not a compressed-air method.
- The device is still powered, connected, or has batteries that the manual says to remove. Stop and complete the power or battery step first.
- The task is outside the one the maker describes, such as cleaning ports or openings the instructions do not name. The sources cited here do not support using compressed air in those places.
