Yes—you can charge a laptop and phone at the same time with one charger if it has two compatible outputs and supplies enough power to each device while both are connected. Check your laptop’s charging requirements, the charger’s two-device output, and the cables before plugging in; a USB-C connector alone does not guarantee USB Power Delivery or a particular charging speed.
Check whether both devices can charge from the same charger
Start with the laptop, since its power requirements are usually the limiting factor. Look up the exact model’s charging method and minimum recommended adapter wattage in the manufacturer’s guidance. Not every laptop accepts charging through every USB-C port. If yours uses a proprietary connector or a manufacturer-specific charging method, follow its instructions rather than assuming a USB-C charger will work.
Then confirm that the charger has two outputs compatible with your laptop and phone. Both devices must support the charger’s connectors and charging protocol. USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is designed to manage power delivery across compatible devices, but the USB-C connector shape by itself does not establish USB PD support or a particular power level. Check the power available when both ports are in use
Read the charger’s specifications for its total output and the output available to each port when two devices are connected. Multi-port chargers can share a pool of power, so the figure printed prominently on the charger may describe a maximum that is not available to the laptop during simultaneous charging. USB-IF’s shared-capacity charger test specification describes how connecting another device can change the power contract on a port: USB Power Delivery Compliance Test Specification.

Apple’s 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter is one documented example: Apple says it automatically shares power and, when used with a Mac laptop and an iPhone or iPad, supplies up to 17.5W to each device. That illustrates power sharing; it is not a universal laptop-and-phone recommendation and may be too little for some laptops or workloads. Check Apple’s 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter guidance for the specific configuration.
USB PD Revision 3.1 supports up to 240W with a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. USB-IF describes the revision’s 28V, 36V, and 48V fixed-voltage levels, corresponding to up to 140W, 180W, and 240W; earlier USB PD arrangements were limited to 100W. These are capabilities of the standard, not evidence that a particular charger, cable, laptop, or port supports those levels.

Choose cables that support charging
Use cables compatible with the devices and capable of carrying the power your setup requires. USB-C is a connector type, not a guarantee of USB PD support or a cable’s power capability. Some USB-C cables transfer data but do not charge a Mac, as Apple notes in its Mac power-adapter and charging guidance. Check the laptop and charger makers’ specifications for the cable requirements.

- Identify the laptop’s exact model and confirm its supported charging method and minimum recommended adapter wattage.
- Choose a charger with two compatible outputs, then verify the output available to each port with both devices attached.
- Connect each device with a suitable charging cable. If the charger specifies a higher-output port, connect the laptop there.
- Check the laptop’s battery or power status for a slow-charging warning or other indication that the supplied power is insufficient. Apple says a Mac may display “Slow Charger” when the wattage is too low.
- If the laptop charges too slowly for your needs, use a compatible higher-capacity charger or charge the phone separately.
For a USB-C iPhone, Apple says a 20W or higher USB-C adapter can charge the phone, including for faster charging. That phone guidance does not determine the wattage required by a laptop; check the laptop’s model-specific requirements separately. See Apple’s iPhone charging guidance.

Follow basic charging safety practices
- Use compatible, standards-compliant chargers and cables in good condition.
- Do not use frayed, damaged, wet, or otherwise compromised equipment. Apple warns that damaged chargers or cables, or charging while moisture is present, can cause fire, electric shock, injury, or device damage.
- Keep the charger and devices ventilated. Do not cover them with bedding or place them under a pillow or your body while charging.
- If equipment becomes unusually hot, is damaged, or behaves erratically, disconnect it safely and follow the device manufacturer’s guidance.
