Choose a public, well-lit place where other people are present, agree on it before you travel, and tell someone you trust the time and location. These precautions can make an in-person Facebook Marketplace pickup safer, but no public venue guarantees safety.
Choose and agree on a suitable meeting place
Settle the location in advance rather than deciding on the spot. Look for a place that is public, well-lit, and likely to have other people around at the time of the exchange. Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs recommends a public, well-lit area for in-person Marketplace meetings in its guidance for Singapore.
Compare possible venues by whether they are public and occupied, how well lit they are, and whether they will be available when you plan to meet. A busy public setting is a precaution, not a guarantee that an exchange will be safe.

Check for a designated exchange site in your area
Some police services provide designated locations for in-person exchanges, but do not assume that every police station has one. If you are in Victoria, Australia, check the current Victoria Police Safer Exchange Sites information before choosing a site. Victoria Police reports 35 such sites outside police stations, with signage, 24-hour CCTV, and lighting; the program is stated to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These details apply to Victoria’s program, not to police stations or exchange locations elsewhere.

Outside Victoria, check your local police service or municipal resources to see whether a designated exchange location exists and confirm its features and availability. If no suitable site is available, choose another public, well-lit place where people are present.
Share the plan and consider bringing someone
- Tell a trusted person. Share the agreed venue and meeting time with a friend or family member. Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs also recommends sharing the meeting plan through Messenger when that feature is available.
- Consider taking a companion. Victoria Police advises bringing someone along where possible. This is a precaution, not a requirement.

Reassess if the meetup location changes
If the other person proposes a new venue, pause before agreeing. Check whether it is still public, well-lit, and likely to have other people present at the planned time. If it does not feel suitable, decline the change and suggest another public location or do not proceed with the pickup. This is a practical way to apply the location-focused safety guidance, not a quoted rule from Facebook or a police service.
