Both require Docker and a valid Wowza license or trial key; the direct guide also supports Trial mode when a key is missing or invalid.
Choose a Docker setup
| Option | Best suited to | What starts | License | Persistence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Linux container | Operators who want to set container flags and environment variables themselves | The Wowza Streaming Engine image; Manager access depends on published ports and configuration | Bring your own subscription or perpetual key. Without a valid key, the guide says Engine operates in Trial mode. | Bind a host directory for logs; add other mounts as needed. |
| Docker Compose trial | Getting started with a preconfigured two-service stack | Separate Engine and browser-based Manager services | Use a trial key or a paid key. | Optionally mount configuration, applications, and content to retain them beyond the container lifecycle. |
Wowza documents both methods in its direct Docker setup guide and Docker Compose guide, updated October 2, 2026. Pick one path rather than mixing commands from the two examples.
Check prerequisites and choose an image
- Install Docker on the host, then run
docker versionto confirm the client and daemon are available. - Have a Wowza license key for the direct BYOL setup, or a trial key or paid key for Compose. Treat any fallback to Trial mode as a license state, not as a substitute for confirming your intended usage is covered.
- Choose an image architecture supported by your machine. Wowza documents AMD64 (x86_64) and ARM64 (aarch64) image variants.
- Check that host ports required by your intended management and streaming protocols are free and reachable through any host firewall or network rules.
The Docker Hub repository is wowza/wowza-streaming-engine. Wowza’s setup pages identify WSE 4.12.0 as the latest software image in their October 2, 2026 update. Tags change: use an explicit version tag when you need repeatable deployments. The direct guide cautions that the repository’s latest tag is defined by its owner and is not guaranteed to track the newest software release. On Apple Silicon, use the ARM image and do not configure Docker to use Rosetta 2 for Intel emulation with that ARM image.
Run the direct Linux container
Pull and start the image
Replace bracketed placeholders below with your chosen image tag and container name. The documented basic form is:

docker run -it --name [container-name] --entrypoint /sbin/entrypoint.sh [repository]:[version]
For Wowza’s image, the repository is wowza/wowza-streaming-engine. The -it flags keep an attached pseudo-terminal; use -d instead when you want the container to run in the background. Naming it makes later stop and start commands easier.
Publish ports, set credentials, and mount logs
The expanded direct example uses ports 1935, 8086, 8087, and 8088, a restart policy, a log bind mount, and these environment variables: WSE_MGR_USER, WSE_MGR_PASS, WSE_LIC, and WSE_IP_PARAM. The structure is:

-v [host-log-directory]:[container-log-directory]
-e WSE_MGR_USER=[manager-user]
-e WSE_MGR_PASS=[manager-password]
-e WSE_LIC=[wowza-license-key]
-e WSE_IP_PARAM=[ipv4-address]
--entrypoint /sbin/entrypoint.sh wowza/wowza-streaming-engine:[version]
This is a parameter pattern, not a ready-to-run credential set: substitute values appropriate to your host, license, and chosen tag. Confirm the exact container log path and host directory against the image documentation before running it. The published port list is Wowza’s example; expose only the ports your protocols and management access require, and ensure they are permitted on the host and network.
Wowza documents wowza as the default Manager username and password if the Manager variables are omitted. Set your own values rather than relying on these defaults, especially on a network-accessible host. If WSE_LIC is absent or invalid, the guide says the software runs in Trial mode. If no WSE_IP_PARAM is given, the default is localhost. This configuration does not support IPv6 addresses; provide IPv4.

Publishing ports matters: Wowza warns that Manager will not be accessible if its ports are not exposed. Port publication makes a container port available through Docker; it does not by itself configure external firewalls, routing, or protocol availability.
Open Manager and verify the deployment
After the container starts, use the Manager address and host mapping appropriate to your deployment. Check container logs and confirm the Manager port is published and reachable from the browser you are using. Keep the Manager credentials private and avoid exposing management access more broadly than needed.

For the Compose sample, Wowza gives this Manager URL: http://localhost:8088/login.htm?host=http://wse.docker:8087. It is a sample for the documented Compose arrangement, not a universal URL for the direct container or a remote host.
Use the Docker Compose trial stack instead
- Sign up for a Wowza trial to obtain a trial license key, or prepare a paid key.
- Download or create the YAML configuration following Wowza’s Compose setup instructions. Configure the Engine and Manager image tags, license, and optional Manager credentials.
- Review the example port mappings and check that needed host ports are available. The sample includes mappings for REST API, web delivery, secure streaming, RTMP-family protocols, and SRT over UDP. These mappings do not guarantee each protocol is enabled or reachable through your host and network.
- Configure optional mounts for configuration, applications, and content you need to preserve beyond a container lifecycle.
- From the directory containing the YAML file, run
docker compose up. Follow the guide’s sample Manager URL or the address configured for your deployment.
Stop, restart, and preserve data

docker stop [container-name]
docker start [container-name]
Wowza says logs and libraries persist when a stopped container is started again. A container’s lifecycle is different from a stop/start cycle: use host bind mounts or Compose volumes for logs, configuration, applications, and content that must remain available beyond the container lifecycle. Mounting logs also helps prevent them from filling the container’s primary disk.
Troubleshoot common startup and access problems
- Image pull or startup fails: Check that the tag exists and matches the host architecture (AMD64 or ARM64). On Apple Silicon with the ARM image, do not enable Rosetta 2 Intel emulation for this setup.
- Manager page does not open: Confirm Manager ports are published, not already occupied on the host, and permitted by local or network firewalls. The direct guide explicitly warns that Manager is inaccessible without exposed ports.
- Another service already uses a port: Check host port availability before starting; adjust the host-side mapping and use the corresponding address and port when connecting.
- Engine enters Trial mode: Check that
WSE_LICcontains the correct valid key, or use the trial-key workflow for Compose. An absent or invalid key leads to Trial mode in the direct guide. - Manager login is rejected: Verify the configured
WSE_MGR_USERandWSE_MGR_PASS. If omitted, both default towowza; explicit credentials avoid depending on that default. - Address binding does not work: Supply an IPv4 address to
WSE_IP_PARAM; this Docker configuration does not support IPv6, and an omitted value defaults to localhost. - Logs or app data disappear or fill storage: Ensure the intended host-to-container mounts are present and point to the correct directories. Mount logs to avoid filling the container’s primary disk, and mount persistent configuration, applications, or content where required.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different use case—keeping a pre-recorded YouTube channel live around the clock—StreamNeo is a cloud service, not a Wowza Docker deployment. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. The same service is available at StreamNeo; it streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
