To run visual tests with Python in Test Automation University (TAU), use Selenium to drive a web app to a meaningful state, then add an Applitools Eyes visual checkpoint to compare that rendering with an approved baseline. Keep functional assertions too: they check behavior, while visual tests flag rendered changes that behavior checks may miss.
What TAU means in this guide
TAU here means Test Automation University, whose Python visual-testing course uses Selenium and the Applitools Python SDK. It does not mean the University of Oregon’s Tuning and Analysis Utilities performance-profiling toolkit; that toolkit is unrelated to screenshot-based visual regression testing.
The course review describing setup was published in 2020. Use it to understand the workflow and topics, not as current package-installation guidance. The course’s official integration lesson confirms the Python, Selenium, and Applitools SDK combination, but the available material does not establish current installation commands, method signatures, or Python/browser compatibility. Check the current course and vendor documentation before using specific setup commands or APIs.
How a Python visual test works
- Set up a repeatable test context. Install a supported Python version, configure Selenium and a browser driver, and add the visual testing SDK according to current official instructions.
- Drive a meaningful user journey. Use Selenium to open the application and perform the actions that lead to the state you want to validate. The course review describes a bookstore example that navigates to a results page.
- Keep functional assertions. Assert important behavior—such as expected text or navigation—separately from the visual checkpoint. A page can pass a functional assertion while its colors, spacing, or other rendered details have changed.
- Add a visual checkpoint at the state of interest. The checkpoint captures the rendered state and compares subsequent runs with an accepted baseline. Follow the current Applitools Python SDK documentation for the exact call and lifecycle; do not assume method names from older examples remain valid.
- Inspect mismatches before accepting a new baseline. Decide whether each difference is an unintended regression or an expected product change. Update the baseline only after confirming the new appearance is correct.
The course review uses a bookstore color change to illustrate why this matters: a text-oriented check may still pass even though the interface looks different.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a visual comparison mode
The course review describes four Applitools comparison modes. Their trade-offs are different; select one based on what the test needs to notice, rather than treating any mode as universally best.
| Mode | What it emphasizes | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Exact | Pixel-level equality | Use when even a small pixel change matters and the rendering environment is controlled. |
| Strict | Visually meaningful differences using visual AI | Use when the goal is to catch meaningful appearance changes without requiring every pixel to match. The review says this was the course’s typical choice; that is course guidance, not a universal current rule. |
| Content | Content while tolerating color differences | Consider it when text or content changes matter more than color variation. |
| Layout | Structure and layout, including dynamic content scenarios | Consider it when content is expected to vary but structural shifts should be detected. |
Rendering noise, fonts, animations, dynamic data, browser versions, and viewport differences can all affect comparisons. Stabilize the test environment where possible, and choose the checkpoint scope deliberately: the course review describes whole-page captures, selected regions, regions inside iframes, and PDF visual validation. Verify support and exact APIs in current documentation before adding those cases.

Reviewing and maintaining baselines
- Investigate the changed area. Compare the new image with the accepted baseline and identify whether the cause is a code change, dynamic content, timing, environment drift, or an actual defect.
- Retain expected product changes. If the change is intentional and approved, update the baseline through the current review workflow. Avoid accepting all differences automatically.
- Group related checks thoughtfully. The course review covers grouping checks into batches and analyzing results. Use grouping to make related failures easier to review, but follow current product documentation for implementation details.
- Expand beyond a single screenshot when needed. The review also describes selected regions, iframe regions, PDFs, and integrations. These are possible coverage areas, not claims that every configuration or current SDK version supports them identically.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot of a URL rather than an integrated regression test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. This does not replace Selenium-driven user journeys or an approved visual-baseline review, but it can avoid setting up a browser just to capture a page.

Troubleshooting visual-test failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Many differences appear between runs | Unstable content, timing, browser configuration, or viewport | Make test data and browser settings repeatable, wait for the relevant state to settle, and use a comparison mode appropriate to expected variation. |
| A checkpoint fails after an intentional design update | The accepted baseline still reflects the previous appearance | Review the difference, confirm the new design is expected, then update the baseline through the current Applitools workflow. |
| Functional checks pass but the page looks wrong | Behavior assertions do not cover all rendered details | Add a visual checkpoint around the affected state and inspect the comparison result. |
| Current sample code does not run | Older course material may not match current SDK, Python, browser, or driver APIs | Use current official installation and API documentation for compatible versions and method signatures; the 2020 review is not a current setup reference. |
| A region or PDF check cannot be configured from an example | The exact feature or API may differ by SDK version or configuration | Confirm current support and syntax in vendor documentation before building the test around it. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does TAU mean the University of Oregon profiling toolkit here?
No. This article uses TAU to mean Test Automation University; the University of Oregon toolkit is a separate performance-profiling project.
Can ScreenshotNeo replace a Selenium visual regression test?
No. It captures a URL, while a Selenium visual regression test drives a user journey and compares its state against a reviewed baseline.
