Run visual checks on both your shared integration branch and pull requests, but decide what each check is meant to prove. A branch’s approved visual baseline may not automatically absorb later changes on main, and a pull-request comparison against its merge base is not the same as a regression test against an approved baseline. Keep screenshot generation reproducible, review intentional changes before accepting them, and regularly merge or rebase main into active feature branches.

Choose the comparison your team needs

Visual checks answer two different questions: “What changed from the approved visual state?” and “What does this pull request introduce compared with its base?” Treat those as separate checks rather than assuming one green result proves both.

Check What it compares Where the baseline or approval lives Useful for
Playwright native screenshot assertions The current screenshot against a golden image in the test snapshot directory. Snapshot files can be committed to Git alongside tests. Repository-owned baselines, platform consistency, and review of image updates.
Chromatic UI Tests A build against the accepted baseline associated with that branch. Accepted snapshots are associated with branch and build history. Branch-scoped regression checks and hosted snapshot review.
Chromatic UI Review The pull-request head against its merge base. Produces a changeset; it does not use UI Test baselines. Reviewing what the pull request changes relative to its base.
Percy Git A build against a base-branch build selected through Git history. Approval applies to an entire build. Teams that want build-level approval and Git-history-based comparison.
Percy Visual Git A build against the latest approved snapshots on each branch. Snapshots can be approved individually. Teams that need snapshot-level approval.

Tool behavior and configuration can change; consult the relevant official documentation when choosing settings. Chromatic explains branch baselines and Git history, while BrowserStack documents Percy baseline management.

Set a baseline policy before branches diverge

Pick stable, representative states

Write screenshot checks for meaningful component and page states rather than capturing every possible state indiscriminately. Use deliberate snapshot names, and select the browsers and viewports that matter to the product. Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() uses browser and platform context in snapshot naming, which matters because renderings can differ across environments. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Decide who can approve visual changes

Choose whether a visual change requires review and approval, and whether approval applies to an entire build or to individual snapshots. Do not let a successful test silently redefine the expected appearance. A reviewer should inspect the diff and accept it only when the UI change is intentional.

Keep shared-branch baselines current

Test the shared integration branch, usually main, and keep it clean so that its visual state can serve as a meaningful reference. Chromatic recommends testing main and documents controls including autoAcceptChanges for accepting incoming changes on main in certain squash or rebase workflows, and ignoreLastBuildOnBranch when the target branch’s latest build should be ignored. Use these settings only after confirming that they match your approval policy. The details are in Chromatic’s GitHub Actions guide.

Build a predictable branch workflow

  1. Create and approve the initial baseline. With Playwright native assertions, the first run creates a missing snapshot file. Inspect the generated image, then commit it with the test. With a hosted service, establish the approved baseline using its documented workflow.
  2. Run checks on both main and pull requests. Configure CI triggers for pushes to the shared branch and for pull requests. Install the matching Playwright browser binaries when using Playwright, and retain reports or artifacts that help reviewers understand a failure. Playwright documents CI setup and sharding.
  3. Make each pull-request check explicit. Use a regression check to detect changes from the approved visual state. If you also need to show what a PR introduces relative to its base, run a merge-base review separately; in Chromatic, UI Review serves that purpose, while UI Tests compare against branch baselines.
  4. Sync long-lived feature branches with main. Merge or rebase main into a feature branch periodically, then rerun visual checks. Branch-scoped accepted baselines do not necessarily inherit later approvals made on main.
  5. Review and accept intentional changes. For native Playwright snapshots, update images deliberately with npx playwright test --update-snapshots, inspect the changed files, and commit them. For hosted checks, approve the appropriate build or snapshots after review.
  6. Preserve Git metadata in CI. Chromatic uses Git to associate commits with pull requests and baselines. Its Playwright integration requires Git to be available in the CI environment. Ensure checkout depth and repository history meet the needs of the behavior you use. See Chromatic’s Playwright setup guide.

Keep screenshot output reproducible

A visual test is useful only when ordinary rendering variation does not overwhelm meaningful changes. Playwright warns that host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect screenshots. Its guidance is direct: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” Playwright visual comparisons.

  • Use the same browser version and OS or container image for baseline generation and CI comparison where practical.
  • Keep viewport dimensions, device scale, fonts, and headless settings consistent.
  • Control animations and dynamic content that would otherwise change between runs.
  • Mask volatile regions with a stylesheet or use a considered diff threshold where appropriate; avoid thresholds broad enough to hide real defects.
  • Retain the failed comparison output so reviewers can distinguish a rendering-environment problem from a genuine UI regression.

Understand what happens when main changes

In Chromatic, each branch has its own accepted baseline. A newly created branch inherits a baseline from its branch point, but later accepted changes on main do not automatically rewrite that feature branch’s baseline. As a result, a feature branch may report differences that were already accepted on main. Sync main into the feature branch and rerun to bring its code and visual state forward.

For a PR-to-merge-base review, the question is instead what the PR head changes relative to its base. That review is useful for understanding the changes that would land, but it does not establish that the branch is current against an approved regression baseline. Chromatic describes these branch and comparison semantics in its branching and baselines documentation.

A pull-request diff contains surprising base-branch work

Check whether the CI pull-request event tests a synthetic merge commit and how the tool calculates the comparison. Chromatic’s GitHub Actions guidance discusses this issue and relevant branch and baseline configuration.

An update becomes the new expected result without meaningful review

Separate change detection from approval. For Playwright, review the image changes produced by npx playwright test --update-snapshots before committing them. For hosted baselines, approve only the build or snapshots whose changes are intentional.
