A practical setup is Maestro for automating React Native Storybook on iOS and Android, plus a screenshot comparison and review workflow. Detox is an option when you want captures inside existing end-to-end tests; Percy documents a Storybook-based hosted workflow using Appium. Jest snapshots are useful for serialized component output, but they do not compare rendered screenshots.
What visual regression testing checks
A visual regression test asks whether a rendered screen has changed from an approved image. The test captures a screen or component state, compares that image with a baseline, and presents differences for review. A changed image is a signal to investigate—not, by itself, proof of a defect. The change may be an intentional redesign, an unstable test state, or an unintended layout or styling regression.
This differs from a normal Jest snapshot test. Jest’s snapshot mechanism serializes values to text; it does not capture the pixels a user sees. Keep Jest snapshots for the kinds of output they cover, and use rendered screenshots when the concern is visual appearance. Jest snapshot testing documentation
React Native Storybook’s testing guide says visual testing is not built in for its setup and demonstrates using a UI automation tool such as Maestro to visit stories and capture screenshots. That makes a Storybook-driven suite a useful starting point for component libraries, while app-level tests can cover navigation and screen composition. React Native Storybook testing guide

Choose the states worth protecting
Start with a deliberate set of representative states rather than trying to capture every possible combination. For a component library, choose stories for states such as default, loading, error, and disabled, plus long text or important theme and accessibility variants. For an application, prioritize screens and navigation states where layout or content changes would matter.
- Use isolated stories when you want focused component coverage and quick diagnosis.
- Use full-screen app captures when surrounding layout, overlap, navigation, or system-bar context matters.
- Record which platform and rendering configuration each baseline represents; an iOS image and an Android image should not be treated as interchangeable baselines.
This selection is a practical test-design choice, not a prescribed suite size. The cited documentation describes story-driven capture but does not set a required number of stories or screens.
Make the render deterministic before capturing
Visual comparison is useful only when the same intended state produces a sufficiently consistent image. Stabilize the inputs the app can control, then normalize device details that are irrelevant to the screen being tested.
Control content and rendering
- Use fixed or seeded test data so text, dates, and list contents do not vary between runs.
- Keep locale, theme, appearance, font scale, simulator or emulator model, operating-system version, and resolution consistent with the baseline.
- Control animation and network behavior where the app permits it. Wait for the story or screen to appear, animations to finish, and asynchronous images or other content to settle before capture.
- Use stable identifiers such as
testIDfor automation targets. Maestro notes that visible text can change or be translated, making text-based targeting brittle. Maestro’s React Native support guide
Normalize system UI
The device clock, battery, network indicators, and notifications can create screenshot differences unrelated to your app. Detox documents simulator or emulator demo mode as a way to control items such as status-bar time, battery, network, and notifications. Use consistent device settings for baseline and candidate captures; normalization reduces irrelevant variation but does not guarantee identical rendering across different OS versions or hardware. Capture React Native Storybook stories with Maestro
Maestro documents React Native support on both Android and iOS. The Storybook testing guide’s flow is to install Maestro, start the app with Storybook, open a story by its story ID, wait for animation, assert that the story is visible, and capture a screenshot. The guide also demonstrates waiting for animation to end. Its Expo deep-link example must be adapted to your app’s own identifier and URI. React Native Storybook testing guide Maestro React Native guide
- Start the Storybook-enabled app. Use the startup path appropriate to your project and platform. The precise launch target depends on whether you are using Expo Go, a development build, or a standalone app.
- Open the intended story. Navigate using the story ID or deep link used by your Storybook setup, replacing example app IDs and URIs with your project’s values.
- Wait for a stable render. Wait for the expected story to appear, animations to end, and asynchronous assets to load before taking the image.
- Capture the screenshot. Save it as a test artifact that can be compared with the approved baseline for that platform and configuration.
- Check the framing. If Storybook’s on-device interface obscures the content you want to test, disable that UI as the guide recommends.
Maestro’s launch method depends on the app type: its guide says Expo Go should use openLink with a development URL rather than launchApp with a custom app ID; standalone apps and EAS builds use their bundle or package identity. Consult the guide for the current setup details for your build type rather than copying an example identity literally. Maestro’s React Native support guide
Capture during app-level tests with Detox
Detox can capture either the whole device screen or a selected element. Choose the boundary that matches the defect you want to catch:
- Whole-device screenshot: use this when the test needs to catch composition, surrounding layout, overlap, or status-bar context.
- Element screenshot: use this for a focused component when a smaller capture makes the test easier to stabilize. Check that the crop does not hide a neighboring element covering or crowding the component.
Detox specifically warns that capturing only a selected element can miss an obstruction outside its captured boundary. A small crop can make a focused component comparison more manageable, but it is not a replacement for full-screen coverage where the surrounding arrangement matters. Detox screenshot guide

Compare captures and review baselines
For every intended platform and device configuration, keep a known-good baseline. On a later run, generate a comparison or diff between the candidate capture and that baseline. Inspect the changed areas rather than treating any non-identical image as an automatic failure: differences can point to a genuine UI issue, changed test data, unsettled rendering, or volatile system UI.
- Review the candidate screenshot alongside the baseline and its diff.
- If the change is unintended, fix the interface or stabilize the test setup, then rerun.
- If the change is intentional, approve the new image as the baseline through your team’s review process.
- Keep the platform and rendering configuration associated with each baseline so later comparisons use the right reference.
Storybook’s visual-testing documentation describes reviewing changed pixels and accepting intentional visual changes. The React Native Storybook guide includes a local screenshot-comparison example; Percy documents a managed baseline-approval and CI workflow. Run visual checks in CI
Run capture and comparison on pull requests or before merge, using the same simulator or emulator and rendering settings as the approved baseline. Make screenshots and diffs available as review artifacts so a maintainer can decide whether to fix the UI or accept an intentional change. Storybook recommends visual testing during development and in CI before merge; Percy documents CI integration and pull-request status checks. Storybook visual testing documentation Percy React Native Storybook setup
A useful CI result should make the decision legible: which state was captured, which baseline was used, what changed, and where a reviewer can inspect both images. Avoid approving a new baseline simply to clear a failed job; first determine whether the difference is an intended product change or a test-stability problem.

Check whether time, battery, network indicators, or notifications vary between runs. Use consistent simulator or emulator settings; Detox’s documented demo-mode approach can normalize several of these system details.
The automation cannot find a story or control
Prefer a stable testID over visible text that may change or be translated. Confirm that the target story is open and visible before capture. For Maestro with Expo Go, check that you are using the development-URL openLink path described in its React Native guide, not a custom app ID with launchApp.

A component capture passes while the screen still looks wrong
Inspect the element crop. It may exclude neighboring layout or an overlay that affects the user-visible result. Add a whole-device capture for cases where composition and surrounding context are part of what you need to protect.
The baseline differs across machines or platforms
Verify that the candidate is being compared with a baseline for the same platform and rendering configuration. Keep simulator or emulator model, OS version, resolution, font scale, locale, and theme consistent. These checks improve repeatability; they cannot establish that different devices render identically.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a native React Native simulator or device-test replacement. It can help when the visual state you need is available as a web page—for example, a web-rendered companion or a webpage in a broader visual workflow. It does not capture native iOS or Android UI. The native workflow above remains the right fit for native screens. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.
For a web page, one GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, cURL:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
