Run two independent FFmpeg processes on one Linode: give each process its own prerecorded video, YouTube Live event URL, and matching stream key. This is the simplest architecture for sending two different looping videos to two YouTube events. You must size the server for both outbound streams, supervise each process separately, and test the pair under sustained load; published guidance does not establish a guaranteed Linode size for this exact workload.

How the two-stream setup works

Each FFmpeg process reads and loops one video, then sends it directly to YouTube. The two processes can share a Linode, but each needs its own input and the credentials for its corresponding YouTube event. If one process exits, the other need not stop with it—provided you configure and verify separate supervision and health checks.

This is a practical architecture based on YouTube’s encoder workflow and FFmpeg’s loop options; it is not a reported hands-on test of two concurrent loop encoders on a particular Linode plan. Confirm that the channel and events you intend to use support your planned broadcasts.

Prepare YouTube events and stream credentials

  1. Create or select both broadcasts. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream for each broadcast.
  2. Copy the matching ingest details. For each event, copy its server URL and stream key into that event’s FFmpeg configuration. Do not swap keys between processes. Treat stream keys like passwords: keep them out of public scripts, logs, screenshots, and repositories, and replace a key in YouTube if it is exposed.
  3. Choose ingest settings. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Configure a format and bitrate supported by the selected event and your source media.

Prepare inputs and choose whether to copy or encode

Have both source videos available to the server, and check their video and audio streams, resolution, frame rate, and container before starting. A looping command can use FFmpeg’s -re to read at native playback speed and -stream_loop -1 to repeat the input indefinitely. Stream copy (-c copy) avoids re-encoding, but is suitable only when the source streams and container fit the output YouTube accepts. It is not a universal setting for every file.

If the source does not match the intended output, configure a transcode instead and account for the additional CPU load. The exact codec and bitrate options depend on the media and desired resolution; validate the resulting stream in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming that a command will work unchanged for every input.

Set YouTube-compatible video and audio

YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked on October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and CBR rate control. It recommends stereo audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Recheck the official YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when configuring a stream because specifications can change.

H.264 video bitrate 8 Mbps 14 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 video bitrate 6 Mbps 10 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates for the listed codec and format, not a claim that every source requires precisely that rate or that a server can sustain it. The full YouTube bitrate table varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s guidance says: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” Apply that interval to each encoded stream.

YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewers. Test each event using representative motion and audio, then check Live Control Room’s stream health before relying on the broadcast.

Run and supervise both FFmpeg processes

  1. Configure one process per event. Give each process its own input path, output settings, YouTube server URL, and corresponding stream key. Keep the processes’ logs and restart policies distinguishable.
  2. Start one stream, then the other. Confirm that the first appears correctly in its event before launching the second. This helps isolate a bad input, key, or output configuration.
  3. Check each event in Live Control Room. Verify that video and audio arrive and that stream health is acceptable. Watch both events during the test rather than assuming the second will behave like the first.
  4. Use process supervision and alerting. Arrange independent restart behavior and an alert if either process exits or stops delivering. The cited guidance does not establish a particular supervisor setup or an uptime guarantee for this two-stream design.
  5. Test recovery deliberately. In a non-critical test, observe what happens after a process exit or network interruption, and confirm that the correct process restarts and returns to the intended event. Also verify that the second stream remains unaffected.

Estimate bandwidth, transfer, and server capacity

Outbound bandwidth

Plan for the two video bitrates added together, plus audio and protocol overhead. For example, two H.264 720p30 streams at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps each mean about 16 Mbps combined video bitrate; two H.264 1080p30 streams at 14 Mbps each mean about 28 Mbps. Leave room above those sums for overhead and other traffic.

To estimate monthly decimal gigabytes of transfer, use combined Mbps × 0.45 × hours streamed. Treat the result as a planning estimate: allow for audio, protocol overhead, restarts, and other account traffic. Check the selected Linode plan’s current transfer allowance and billing terms before choosing resolution or committing to continuous streaming.

CPU and memory

Linode’s RTMP guide says a single stream may fit a 1 GB instance and suggests at least 4 GB for retransmitting to several sites or converting formats. That is broad guidance, not a current benchmark or guarantee for two separate loop encoders. Copying already-compatible streams should use less CPU than transcoding, but actual demand depends on the inputs, output settings, and instance.

Run both streams together for a sustained test and observe CPU, memory, dropped frames, and network use. Do not choose an instance based only on the single-stream guidance or on the assumption that stream copy eliminates all server load.

Interpret anecdotal measurements cautiously

A Linode Community respondent, mauterson, reported about 10 Mbps outbound for one 4K stream and about 20 Mbps after adding a second, then about 4.03 Mbps combined after lowering both inputs to 480p. This is one operator’s report, not a controlled benchmark for your source files or instance. The same response quoted transfer limits and overage prices from roughly four years before October 3, 2026; those are not current plan terms. Measure your own concurrent outputs and check current Linode billing details.

Choose between direct FFmpeg, an RTMP relay, or a managed service

Approach Best fit Main trade-off
Two direct FFmpeg processes on one Linode Two different loop videos sent to two YouTube events You control the setup, but must maintain inputs, processes, monitoring, server capacity, updates, and egress.
RTMP relay Redistributing one incoming feed to multiple destinations The relay can reduce the source location’s uplink demand, but it still sends a copy to each endpoint and may need more resources for transcoding. Linode’s 4 GB suggestion is general guide advice, not a two-loop benchmark.
StreamNeo cloud looping Keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube without operating a server process at home It shifts server operations to a managed service; check that its storage and plan fit your use.

For two distinct loop videos and two YouTube events, two direct FFmpeg outputs are simpler than an RTMP relay; the cited relay guidance concerns forwarding an incoming stream. OBS is another option when desktop controls and a graphical session are useful, but requires a computer session to remain available. Compare approaches by automation and recovery, simultaneous outputs, resolution and bitrate, storage, transfer limits, and how much maintenance you want to own.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is an optional way to loop uploaded videos to YouTube without keeping a Linode process or home computer running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running; it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • An event does not receive video: Check that the process uses that event’s server URL and matching key, that the event is ready in Live Control Room, and that FFmpeg has not exited. Confirm the key has not been revoked or exposed.
  • The stream starts but reports poor health: Compare the configured codec, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance. Check server CPU and outbound network use while both processes run.
  • One stream works and the other fails: Inspect the second process’s input path, media streams, credentials, and logs independently. Two processes do not share event credentials.
  • Frames drop or output becomes unstable under load: Observe CPU, memory, and network use with both streams active. Test a lower resolution or bitrate, or reduce transcoding work if the source is compatible with stream copy; repeat the sustained test after changes.
  • The stream ends after an interruption: Check the process supervisor and alerting, then verify the restart returns to the correct event with the intended key. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; restarting the local process alone does not prove that the event recovered.
  • Audio is missing or unsuitable: Confirm the input has an audio stream and that its selected codec and stereo settings match YouTube’s current guidance. Test with representative sound before broadcast.

Copyright and reused-content checks

Looping a file does not grant permission to broadcast it. Before going live, confirm you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s current rules for live content and monetization. Repeating prerecorded material can also raise reused-content questions for monetization; technical ability to stream a loop is not a guarantee that YouTube will approve a channel or video for monetization. Use YouTube’s policies and the channel’s own notices to assess eligibility.
