To run Selenium tests in GitHub Actions, add a workflow YAML file under .github/workflows, choose the events and runner, install the project’s pinned dependencies, run its existing test command, and upload reports or failure screenshots as artifacts. The exact setup depends on your language, test framework, browser, and runner image; the workflow below is an adaptable starting point, not a universal copy-and-paste configuration.

How a Selenium workflow fits together

GitHub Actions workflows are YAML files in .github/workflows. A workflow responds to repository events, a manual dispatch, or a schedule; it contains one or more jobs, and each job has steps that run scripts or actions. GitHub’s workflow documentation describes this model.

For browser tests, the essential sequence is: choose when to run, select an operating system and browser environment, check out the repository, configure the language runtime, install the dependencies your project pins, run its Selenium test command, then retain useful results and diagnostics.

Choose triggers and a runner

Run tests at the right times

Pull-request runs provide feedback on proposed changes; push runs can check integration on a branch such as main. A manual run or scheduled check can serve separate operational needs. GitHub supports event, manual, and scheduled triggers. A schedule is not a replacement for change-triggered checks, and scheduled workflows have lifecycle behavior: for example, GitHub documents that a deactivated scheduled workflow can be reactivated when a user with write permission changes its cron schedule. See workflow events and the schedule event.

Match the OS and browser to your test target

GitHub documents Linux, Windows, and macOS virtual-machine runners, and each job runs in its own virtual machine or container. Selenium WebDriver controls a browser through the WebDriver interface; Selenium’s documentation describes it as “an interface to write instruction sets that can be run interchangeably in many browsers.” Browser support does not mean every browser is already installed on every hosted runner image. Check the current image contents and select the OS/browser combination your application needs. Sources: GitHub-hosted runners and Selenium WebDriver.

Adapt this workflow to your repository

This illustrative outline demonstrates the workflow shape. Add the setup action, runtime version, dependency-install command, test invocation, report paths, and failure conditions used by your project. Confirm action versions and runner image details in current documentation before adopting them.

name: Selenium tests
on:
  pull_request:
  push:
    branches: [main]
jobs:
  selenium:
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v4
      # Set up the language runtime and version used by this repository.
      # Install the pinned project dependencies.
      # Run the repository's Selenium test command.
      # Upload reports and failure screenshots even if tests fail.

Fill in project-specific setup and test commands

There is no single install or test command for all Selenium projects. Use the repository’s lockfile and documented test runner so CI installs the same dependency versions the project expects. Keep the test command explicit, and make sure the browser test process exits unsuccessfully when a test fails; otherwise the workflow may appear green despite a failed test.

Python and Selenium Manager

For modern Selenium Python bindings, Selenium Manager is the documented browser and driver management path for standard WebDriver creation. A basic launch can use webdriver.Chrome(), but it does not eliminate every environment concern: network restrictions, custom browser versions, unsupported platforms, or strict reproducibility needs may call for explicit browser and driver provisioning. See the Selenium Manager documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, once Python, the pinned Selenium dependency, and a compatible browser environment are available, a minimal test script can create and close a driver as follows:

from selenium import webdriver

 driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    assert "Example Domain" in driver.title
finally:
    driver.quit()

Remove the leading space before driver = if copying this block into a Python file; it should align with the statement below the import. Replace the example URL and assertion with the application and checks your tests actually require.

Runner host or job container?

With no job-level container configured, steps run on the selected runner host unless an action itself runs in a container. GitHub also allows a job container through jobs.<job_id>.container. A container can standardize dependencies, but its image must include or obtain a compatible browser and required system libraries. This is a trade-off rather than an automatic improvement: host execution uses the runner’s environment, while a container makes you responsible for its browser and library setup. See running jobs in a container.

Keep test evidence when a run fails

Reports, logs, and screenshots help explain browser-test failures after the runner has finished. GitHub defines an artifact as “a file or collection of files produced during a workflow run”; its artifact guidance names test results, failures, and screenshots as common examples, and notes that artifacts remain available after a job subject to retention settings. See storing workflow data as artifacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Configure tests to save reports and capture a screenshot when an assertion or browser step fails.
  • Upload the relevant files with failure-tolerant workflow conditions, using the current Actions syntax and an artifact action version verified for your repository.
  • Check the artifact retention setting that applies to the repository so the evidence remains available for the period your team needs.

Do not rely on a dependency cache to preserve diagnostics. Cache reusable dependencies or intermediate files; artifacts are for outputs you need to inspect after a run.

Troubleshoot common failures

The browser or driver cannot be found

Check which browser binaries are actually present on the selected runner image and whether the Selenium binding can obtain a compatible driver. For Python, Selenium Manager handles the common management path, but restricted network access or a custom browser setup can prevent automatic provisioning. Choose an explicit provisioning approach if the environment requires it.

Tests pass locally but fail in CI

Compare the OS, browser version, runtime, and pinned dependencies used locally with those in the workflow. Verify that the application is reachable from the runner and that tests do not depend on local files, interactive login, or timing assumptions absent from CI. Capture browser logs, test reports, and failure screenshots so the next run provides evidence rather than only a failed status.

The workflow is green but tests failed

Ensure the invoked test command returns a nonzero exit status on failure and that the workflow does not mask that status. Keep diagnostic upload steps failure-tolerant without making the test step itself appear successful.

The scheduled run does not happen

Confirm the workflow’s schedule and repository state, and review GitHub’s documented scheduled-workflow lifecycle rules. Keep pull-request or push triggers enabled for the change feedback your team needs.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

There is no universal runtime or reliability figure for Selenium workflows: outcomes depend on the suite, runner and browser environment, dependency setup, and application under test. For repeatability, pin project dependencies and make browser provisioning explicit when the default environment is insufficient. For useful failure diagnosis, preserve artifacts. For feedback timing and CI usage, choose triggers deliberately rather than running every suite on every possible event without need.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a screenshot of a page rather than interactive Selenium assertions, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its options also include full-page capture, element selection, and browser settings. It is not a replacement for a Selenium test suite that must interact with and assert on your application.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use GitHub Actions for Selenium tests in languages other than Python?

Yes. Configure the runtime, dependencies, and test command for the language and test framework used by your repository; the workflow structure is language-neutral.

Does using ScreenshotNeo run my Selenium assertions?

No. It captures page screenshots or PDFs; use Selenium when your tests need to control a browser and verify application behavior.
