To run Selenium-backed SpecFlow tests concurrently, enable NUnit parallel execution at the feature-fixture level, cap the number of workers, and give every scenario its own WebDriver and isolated test data. Start conservatively: the NUnit attributes determine which tests may overlap, while the worker cap limits concurrency. Verify how your installed SpecFlow version generates NUnit tests before applying attributes, and do not assume scenarios within one feature are safe to run in parallel.

Check your versions and generated tests first

There is no single configuration that is safe to copy into every SpecFlow project. Parallel behavior depends on the NUnit and SpecFlow versions, the NUnit adapter or runner, the target framework, and the test structure NUnit actually discovers.

  1. Record the target framework and the installed versions of NUnit, SpecFlow, the NUnit adapter or runner, and Selenium WebDriver.
  2. Inspect the generated NUnit tests or fixtures. Confirm whether a feature maps to a fixture and whether the runner discovers the tests together in the same assembly.
  3. Check the documentation for those exact versions before choosing the attribute scope. The SpecFlow guidance cited here is an indexed copy of documentation hosted on Scribd; treat it as version-dependent and verify it against your installed SpecFlow release: SpecFlow documentation copy.

This matters because an attribute only affects the test nodes to which NUnit applies it. A setting on an assembly, fixture, or test method can produce different scheduling depending on the generated hierarchy.

Enable NUnit parallelism with a worker limit

NUnit framework-level parallel execution is off by default. The Parallelizable attribute marks tests or fixtures as eligible; LevelOfParallelism caps worker threads but does not, by itself, make any tests eligible. See the NUnit framework execution guide, Parallelizable attribute reference, and LevelOfParallelism reference.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a SpecFlow suite, the cited documentation copy recommends assembly-level NUnit configuration and feature-level scheduling. A schematic starting point is:

using NUnit.Framework;

[assembly: LevelOfParallelism(4)]
[assembly: Parallelizable(ParallelScope.Fixtures)]

This is an example, not a universally verified configuration. Check whether your generated fixtures and installed SpecFlow/NUnit versions give these assembly attributes the intended scope. The value 4 is illustrative, not a performance recommendation. Set the cap according to the available browser capacity, application limits, and test-data design; a runner command-line option can override the configured cap.

NUnit documents a default worker count of Environment.ProcessorCount or 2, whichever is greater. That is a framework default, not a sensible assumed capacity for browser tests. Actual concurrency may also be lower because of the test hierarchy and attributes.

Keep scenario state isolated

Do not put scenario-specific state in static fields or static SpecFlow context accessors. The SpecFlow documentation copy recommends constructor injection for scenario and feature context in binding classes during parallel execution. Keep injected context and scenario-specific services scoped to the scenario, and check that any shared service has an intentional lifetime and thread-safety design.

For example, a small injected object can hold the WebDriver for one scenario. SpecFlow context injection and hook APIs vary by version, so confirm the exact binding and registration conventions in your project before using this sketch:

using OpenQA.Selenium;
using OpenQA.Selenium.Chrome;
using TechTalk.SpecFlow;

public sealed class BrowserContext
{
    public IWebDriver Driver { get; set; }
}

[Binding]
public sealed class BrowserHooks
{
    private readonly BrowserContext _browser;

    public BrowserHooks(BrowserContext browser)
    {
        _browser = browser;
    }

    [BeforeScenario]
    public void StartBrowser()
    {
        _browser.Driver = new ChromeDriver();
    }

    [AfterScenario]
    public void StopBrowser()
    {
        if (_browser.Driver == null) return;

        try
        {
            _browser.Driver.Quit();
        }
        finally
        {
            _browser.Driver.Dispose();
            _browser.Driver = null;
        }
    }
}

Bindings that need the browser should receive the same scenario-scoped BrowserContext through injection rather than reading a static driver. The code assumes the Chrome browser and a compatible driver are available in the environment; driver provisioning and SpecFlow’s exact injection behavior depend on your project setup. Selenium’s guidance is to create a new WebDriver instance per test and avoid sharing state.

Give each scenario its own browser and test data

Start a new WebDriver in scenario setup and quit it in cleanup, including when a scenario fails. A SpecFlow BeforeScenario/AfterScenario hook pair is a natural lifecycle location if the driver is stored in scenario-scoped injected state.

  • Use a separate browser session for every scenario; do not share a driver across tests running concurrently.
  • Create unique records or deterministic per-test data so scenarios cannot overwrite or select one another’s records.
  • Clean up test data and stale records. A fresh browser alone does not isolate a shared database, account, file, or external service.
  • Review fixture fields and properties for mutation. NUnit warns that parallel tests can interfere when they share fixture state without synchronization; see its Parallelizable attribute guidance.

Keep unsafe tests out of the parallel pool

When a test or fixture must use a shared resource that cannot be made safe, NUnit’s NonParallelizable attribute can prevent it from overlapping with parallel-eligible work. Apply it narrowly, and document which resource requires serialization. The NonParallelizable reference explains the attribute. If the application, database, browser hosts, or test data cannot support the current worker cap, lower it rather than accepting intermittent collisions.

Choose the concurrency layer that fits your suite

These options operate at different levels and can be combined where appropriate. NUnit framework parallelism is not the same as NUnit engine parallelism, and neither substitutes for safe test design.

Choice What runs concurrently When it helps Main trade-off
NUnit framework parallelism Eligible tests or fixtures in one assembly, using worker threads Running independent SpecFlow feature fixtures together Tests share a process, so static state, fixture state, and other shared resources need care. The cited SpecFlow documentation copy warns against scenario-level parallelization within one feature.
NUnit engine parallelism Separate test assemblies, in separate processes Running a suite already divided across assemblies Processes add startup and resource costs; external files, databases, and services can still collide.
Selenium Grid Remote WebDriver sessions across nodes, machines, or browser/platform combinations Adding remote browser capacity or distributed browser coverage Requires Grid infrastructure and available session capacity. It does not isolate test data or make unsafe tests safe.

See the NUnit references for framework execution and engine execution. Selenium describes Grid’s role in its overview. Selenium Server is required for remote WebDriver/Grid use; consult the Selenium downloads page for the current server distribution. Grid setup and topology depend on the release and deployment environment.

Increase concurrency gradually

  1. Run the suite sequentially and record elapsed time and failures as a baseline.
  2. Enable fixture-level parallelism with a small worker cap, then run representative features repeatedly.
  3. Inspect failures for shared-data collisions, race conditions, browser startup problems, Grid capacity limits, and ordinary application/test failures.
  4. Raise the cap only while runs remain stable and browser, application, and test-data capacity can support more simultaneous scenarios.

There is no sourced speedup figure for this particular stack. Concurrency can improve throughput when independent work has spare capacity, but it can also expose races or increase contention.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • Tests still run one at a time: Confirm that the runner uses the expected NUnit adapter, that the tests are discovered in the same assembly, and that the generated fixtures have the parallel eligibility attribute at the intended scope. A worker limit alone does not opt tests into parallel execution.
  • Scenarios within a feature collide or fail intermittently: Verify the installed SpecFlow version’s support before enabling that scope. The available SpecFlow documentation copy recommends parallelizing features rather than scenarios within one feature. Keep scenario-specific state and browsers isolated.
  • Tests overwrite records or select the wrong account: The browser sessions may be separate while test data is shared. Give each scenario unique data and clean it up reliably.
  • Browser creation fails: Check that the browser is installed and that the local driver or Selenium Manager setup is compatible with the Selenium version and execution environment. This setup is separate from NUnit scheduling.
  • Remote sessions are refused or queued: Check Grid availability and session capacity, then lower the NUnit worker cap to fit the available slots. Grid deployment details vary by Selenium Server version and environment.
  • Failures appear only under load: Look for shared fixture fields, static data, rate limits, database contention, and external service limits. Reduce concurrency or serialize only the tests that depend on the unsafe resource.
