For a Playwright project, run visual tests in GitHub Actions by checking out the repository, installing the project’s locked dependencies and Playwright browsers, running npx playwright test, and saving the report and failure images as workflow artifacts. Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion compares each new screenshot with a reviewed baseline; matching the environment used to create those baselines is key to reliable results.
Set up a GitHub Actions workflow for Playwright visual tests
Create a workflow file such as .github/workflows/playwright.yml. The example below follows Playwright’s documented CI sequence: check out the code, set up Node.js, install dependencies, install browsers and required operating-system packages, run tests, and upload the report. See the Playwright CI guide for its current example and requirements.
name: Playwright Tests
on:
push:
branches: [main]
pull_request:
branches: [main]
jobs:
test:
timeout-minutes: 60
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@<reviewed-ref>
- uses: actions/setup-node@<reviewed-ref>
with:
node-version: lts/*
- run: npm ci
- run: npx playwright install --with-deps
- run: npx playwright test
- uses: actions/upload-artifact@<reviewed-ref>
if: ${{ !cancelled() }}
with:
name: playwright-report
path: playwright-report/
retention-days: 30
Replace each <reviewed-ref> with a reviewed version or commit reference for that action; those placeholders are not valid refs to leave in a working workflow. GitHub action references use an owner, repository, and ref, and GitHub recommends choosing a stable version reference to control updates. Review external actions before adding them. See GitHub’s security hardening guidance.
Adjust branch filters, the Node.js version, and install commands to match your repository. npm ci expects a lockfile and installs from it, making it suitable for a CI job that should use the dependency versions committed by the project. The workflow triggers on pushes and pull requests to main; change those filters if your team uses different branches or trigger rules.

Create, review, and update screenshot baselines
Generate a baseline
In a Playwright test, navigate to the page and assert its appearance:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
On its first run, Playwright generates a reference screenshot. Review that image before committing it: an automatically created baseline is only useful if it represents the appearance you intend to preserve. Later runs compare newly captured output against the committed reference. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.
Accept an intentional visual change
When a deliberate interface change should become the new expected appearance, run npx playwright test --update-snapshots. Inspect the resulting image changes, keep only the baselines that reflect approved product changes, and commit them with the code change. Do not update snapshots simply to make a failing build green; first determine whether the difference is intended.

Set comparison tolerance carefully
Playwright offers options such as maxDiffPixels to set how much pixel difference an assertion accepts. Keep any tolerance narrow enough to catch meaningful regressions. A broad threshold can hide them. If a page contains unstable regions, use a targeted stylesheet or other appropriate stabilization rather than weakening every comparison. See Playwright’s visual comparison options.

Screenshot output can change with the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, and headless mode. For dependable comparisons, create and check baselines in the same environment as CI. A CI container can help keep the dependencies and rendering environment consistent; Playwright also documents using its Docker image in CI. See the Playwright CI guide.
If developers generate baselines on one operating system while CI runs on another, platform-specific rendering differences may cause failures. Playwright snapshot names include browser and platform information, and separate platform-specific baselines may be necessary when the environments intentionally differ. Avoid mixing reference images from one environment with comparisons from another without reviewing the impact.

Control dynamic content at its source
Common sources of noisy diffs include timestamps, animations, rotating images, and content that changes between requests. Stabilize or mask only the regions that genuinely cannot be deterministic, and document why. A changing element that is central to the design should generally remain under test rather than be hidden indiscriminately.
Keep reports and screenshots when a run fails
Workflow artifacts preserve files produced during a run after the job has completed. Upload Playwright’s HTML report and, where useful, the expected image, actual image, and comparison diff. The report and image files let reviewers inspect what failed instead of relying on a red status alone. GitHub describes artifacts as a way to share workflow outputs such as test results, failures, and screenshots; they are distinct from dependency caches. See GitHub’s artifact documentation.
The example uses if: ${{ !cancelled() }} so the upload step can run after test failures but not after a cancelled run. Choose retention according to how long reviewers need the evidence and your repository’s policies. Be mindful of sensitive data in reports or screenshots, and do not upload secrets or private page content unintentionally.

Debug visual test failures in GitHub Actions
- Confirm the workflow ran for the change. Check the
pushandpull_requesttriggers and branch filters against the branch involved. - Read the failed step’s log. Check dependency installation, browser downloads, missing OS libraries, and the precise visual assertion that failed. GitHub exposes logs for individual workflow steps; see GitHub’s workflow log guide.
- Download the report and image artifacts. Compare expected, actual, and diff images before deciding whether to change code or a baseline.
- Compare the rendering environments. Check the browser, operating system, fonts, browser settings, and headless mode used locally and in CI. Make them consistent where possible.
- Find unstable page regions. Look for timestamps, animation, or rotating content. Stabilize or mask only the relevant area before considering a comparison threshold change.
- Update snapshots only for reviewed changes. Regenerate, inspect, and commit new baselines when the changed appearance is intentional.
Native Playwright snapshots or hosted visual review?
Playwright’s native screenshot assertions keep reference images in the project and run comparisons as part of the test suite. Percy documents a Playwright client that uploads screenshots for hosted visual testing when configured with a project token. A hosted service is optional; GitHub Actions and Playwright can compare snapshots without one. See Playwright snapshots and Percy’s Playwright integration documentation.
Choose based on where your team wants comparisons and approvals to happen, whether external credentials and screenshot uploads fit your data-handling requirements, and how much setup your review process can support. Current pricing and suitability depend on service terms and team needs; the documentation linked here does not establish a universal cost comparison.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean screenshot as an API result rather than a committed Playwright baseline, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF. Its documented API options include full-page capture, element capture, device and viewport settings, dark mode, PDF output, custom CSS and JavaScript, and more; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does GitHub Actions require a hosted visual-testing service to compare Playwright screenshots?
No. Playwright’s native screenshot assertions compare against local baseline files. A hosted integration is an optional route for teams that want hosted review.
Why can a screenshot test pass on my computer but fail in CI?
The page may be rendered with a different operating system, browser version, fonts, browser settings, hardware, or headless mode. Compare those environments and inspect the actual, expected, and diff images.
