To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an Indian cloud server, create a YouTube live event, copy its stream URL and private stream key into an FFmpeg command on a cloud VM, then send the video as a real-time RTMPS feed. FFmpeg’s -re option paces playback, while -stream_loop -1 repeats the file indefinitely. You still need a verified, eligible YouTube channel, compatible encoder settings, and a test of the actual VM and video before relying on the stream.

Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the event

Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its eligibility guidance also states that users must be at least 16 to live stream. Review the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before setting up the server.

Create the live event and get its stream details

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or configure the event you intend to use.
  2. Choose the encoder option and retrieve the stream URL and stream key associated with that stream. YouTube’s stream settings help explains these values and related settings, including DVR and latency.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your live stream. Do not put a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot, or article.

Use the URL and key shown for your event rather than assuming a universal YouTube ingest address. YouTube’s RTMPS setup documentation describes the required endpoint and application path; the values for your stream are supplied by YouTube.

Choose an Indian cloud VM and plan the route

The VM’s job is to read the video, encode it at real-time pace, and maintain an outbound connection to YouTube. AWS lists its Mumbai region as ap-south-1, and Google Cloud lists Mumbai as asia-south1. These regional names do not guarantee that every VM type, service, or capacity is available there; check the exact compute SKU and current availability with the provider.

Compare candidate hosts by region availability, sustained CPU capacity for your chosen encoding settings, outbound bandwidth and data-transfer charges, storage location, and how you will recover if the VM or connection fails. No particular VM size, provider price, egress rate, or service level is established here, so test your own file and settings on the actual candidate VM before committing. Google Cloud’s location guidance discusses latency, cost, resiliency, and storage proximity; its recommendations concern its managed Live Stream API architecture, so treat them as general location considerations—not VM requirements. See AWS regional information and Google Cloud location guidance.

Use compatible YouTube encoder settings

For a typical prerecorded broadcast, RTMPS is a sensible protocol to evaluate. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL and specifies port 443; use the rtmps scheme and the valid host and application path associated with the stream. YouTube also supports HLS and DASH ingestion, but those protocols have different requirements and trade-offs. Its protocol comparison describes RTMP/RTMPS for normal, low, or ultra-low latency and HLS/DASH as encrypted alternatives more suited to some high-resolution use cases, generally with higher latency. Do not switch protocols without matching the encoder configuration to YouTube’s instructions.

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 among its general video codec options, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Codec compatibility can depend on the selected ingestion protocol, so do not assume every generally listed codec works with every protocol. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your VM can encode and sustain on upload; YouTube advises testing the stream and selecting quality based on a reliable upload bitrate.

Install FFmpeg and send the looping file

Place the media on the VM

Make the video file available at a stable path on the cloud host, either by uploading it or fetching it from storage. Confirm that the VM can read the file and that the FFmpeg build includes the encoders and RTMPS transport you plan to use. If the file is remote, account for transfer time and storage/network costs before starting the event.

Start a real-time loop to YouTube

This illustrative command shows the shape of the workflow; it is not a tested or provider-verified recipe. Replace the placeholders with the exact YouTube stream URL and key, and tune encoding options to the source file and selected YouTube profile.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv
  'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_HOST/YOUTUBE_APP/YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY'
  • -re reads the input at its intended real-time rate instead of sending the file as fast as possible.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. Omit or change looping behavior if the event should end when the video finishes.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac select H.264 video and AAC audio for this example; verify compatibility with the protocol and current YouTube requirements.
  • -f flv selects the output container used in this RTMP-style command shape. The destination must use the RTMPS endpoint details YouTube provides for your stream.

The pattern of reading a recording with -re, looping it, encoding H.264/AAC, and sending an RTMPS output is also shown in an AWS example for Amazon IVS. That example’s destination is Amazon IVS-specific, not YouTube; do not copy its endpoint or key into a YouTube command.

For production use, add and verify explicit output settings appropriate to your source and target profile: resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, CBR behavior, GOP/keyframe interval, audio bitrate, and any pixel-format conversion needed by the input. The sample command intentionally does not invent values for those settings. Store the real key in a protected configuration or secrets mechanism rather than embedding it in a public script or command history.

Preview, monitor, and handle failures

  1. Start the encoder ahead of the intended broadcast where practical, then check the event’s preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room before making it public.
  2. Verify that video and audio play cleanly, the expected resolution and frame rate arrive, and the stream remains stable over a representative test period.
  3. Keep monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast. YouTube’s stream operations guidance covers preparation, preview, failover testing where applicable, and archive checks when recording locally.
  4. Plan how to restart or recover the encoder if the VM or outbound connection stops. A cloud region name alone does not prove that throughput, capacity, or viewer latency will meet your needs.

Common problems and fixes

  • RTMPS connection fails: Check that the destination uses rtmps, port 443, and the exact valid YouTube host and application path for this stream. Check SSL/transport support in the FFmpeg build and confirm the key is current. YouTube’s RTMPS guide identifies host, port, and SSL setup as connection-error causes.
  • YouTube flags stream health or encoder settings: Compare the actual output with the selected profile. Check codec/protocol compatibility, CBR, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, and resolution; use Live Control Room preview and health status alongside YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
  • The picture stops at the end of the video: The file may have ended without looping. Use -stream_loop -1 when the intended behavior is continuous repetition, and confirm that the input path remains readable.
  • The stream stutters or drops: Measure the actual VM’s CPU and outbound performance with the chosen file and settings. Reduce the encoding load or output bitrate if the host cannot sustain it, and check current network and data-transfer limits with the provider; a Mumbai location by itself is not a performance guarantee.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream without maintaining your own VM and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an AWS FFmpeg command destination from its IVS guide for YouTube?

No. The AWS example’s endpoint is for Amazon IVS. Use the stream-specific URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room.

Does choosing a Mumbai cloud region guarantee the stream will work reliably?

No. Test the actual VM, file, encoding load, and outbound connection; regional availability alone does not establish capacity or performance.
