Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can run Playwright tests in an Azure Pipelines job and publish their results so they appear in the pipeline’s Tests view. That is different from launching a Playwright test directly from an Azure Test Plans test case: the latter depends on test-case association and framework support, and Microsoft’s documented framework lists name Jest rather than Playwright. Start with pipeline execution and result publication; verify current Playwright support in your Azure DevOps project before making plan-triggered execution part of your workflow.
Choose the outcome you need
“Run Playwright with Azure Test Plans” can mean two different workflows. They have different prerequisites and should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Workflow | What happens | Best fit | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Azure Pipelines run plus result publication | Your pipeline runs the Playwright command and publishes a supported test-result file for the pipeline Tests view. | Continuous integration, pass/fail visibility, and reviewing test runs. | Playwright must produce a format supported by the publishing task. |
| Test-case association and Azure Test Plans task | An automated test is associated with a test case, enabling traceability and potentially plan-based execution for supported frameworks. | Connecting automation outcomes to test cases or selecting supported tests from a plan or run. | Microsoft’s reviewed support lists name JavaScript Jest, not JavaScript Playwright; verify current support before relying on it. |
| Playwright Workspaces | Tests run in cloud-hosted browsers through a CI workflow. | Teams that need hosted-browser execution rather than browsers on their own agents. | Optional service; Microsoft says charges depend on total test minutes. |
Microsoft describes both pipeline execution and plan-based on-demand execution in its automated testing overview. The generic pipeline route is the dependable starting point when your immediate goal is to run Playwright and see results.
Run Playwright in Azure Pipelines and publish results
Use the Playwright version, package manager, and test command already defined by your repository. Configure the test runner to write a result file in a format accepted by Microsoft’s Publish Test Results@2 task, then publish that file after the tests finish.

The task documents CTest, JUnit (including PHPUnit), NUnit 2 and 3, Visual Studio Test/TRX, and xUnit 2 formats. The example below uses JUnit as the result format; it is a pipeline pattern, not a claim that every Playwright version or project is configured to emit that file by default. Confirm the reporter configuration against the Playwright version and package setup in your repository.
Example pipeline job
Adapt the install and test commands to your project. This example assumes a Node.js project with an existing lockfile and a Playwright test command in package.json. It also assumes the tests write JUnit results under test-results; configure the reporter to match that path before using the publishing step.
steps:
- task: NodeTool@0
inputs:
versionSpec: '20.x'
displayName: 'Use Node.js'
- script: npm ci
displayName: 'Install dependencies'
- script: npx playwright install --with-deps
displayName: 'Install Playwright browsers'
- script: npm test
displayName: 'Run Playwright tests'
continueOnError: true
- task: PublishTestResults@2
inputs:
testResultsFormat: 'JUnit'
testResultsFiles: 'test-results/**/*.xml'
failTaskOnFailedTests: true
failTaskOnMissingResultsFile: true
publishRunAttachments: true
displayName: 'Publish test results'
For a production pipeline, select a Node.js version supported by your project and agent image, and ensure the browser installation step matches the operating system and browsers your suite uses. If your repository’s npm test script does not run Playwright, replace it with the project’s actual test command. If tests write results to another directory, update testResultsFiles accordingly.
continueOnError: true allows the publishing step to run after a failing test command, so failures can still be reported. The publishing task’s failTaskOnFailedTests input can make the task fail the job when results contain failures. Choose failure behavior deliberately for your pipeline and confirm the final job status matches your team’s policy.

Configure the result file deliberately
The key integration point is not a special Azure Test Plans Playwright command; it is the result file. Set up your Playwright reporting so it creates a supported format, then make the publishing task’s format and file glob match the actual output. Avoid assuming that a Playwright HTML report or a folder of screenshots is automatically a test-result file accepted by Publish Test Results@2.
If you use a different supported result format, set testResultsFormat to the matching format and adjust the file pattern. If the suite produces one file per worker or project, use a glob that includes each result file without accidentally collecting stale output from a previous run. Clean or recreate the output directory before testing the configuration so you can identify which files the current run generated.
Verify the pipeline results
- Run the pipeline on a branch or commit that executes the Playwright suite.
- Open the completed pipeline run and select its Tests tab.
- Check that the expected test cases, outcomes, and failures appear, and compare the reported totals with the run’s result files.
- If results are missing or incomplete, inspect the publishing task log and verify the file format, output path, and glob against files created in that job.
Microsoft’s overview of automated testing describes pipeline test results appearing on the Tests tab and reviewing results in the pipeline and Test Run Hub. A successful Playwright command alone does not prove results were published: the result file must exist and the publishing step must find it.
Associate an automated test with a test case
Association is a separate step from publishing results. Microsoft’s association guidance says an automated test must have run at least once before it is available for association from pipeline results. For supported frameworks, the documented flow is to select a pipeline run, open Tests, choose the test, and associate it with a test case. The test case then shows an Associated Automation tab.

- Run the automated test through a pipeline and publish its results.
- Open the relevant pipeline run and go to Tests.
- Select the test result and use the association action to connect it to the intended test case.
- Open that test case and inspect its Associated Automation tab to confirm the link.
Association can support requirement-level traceability when the test case is linked to a requirement. Microsoft’s automated-testing overview also says a test method may be associated with multiple test cases, while a test case can have only one associated test method. Consult the current test association guide for the current UI and supported framework details.
Can Azure Test Plans launch Playwright tests?
Do not infer plan-triggered Playwright support from the fact that Azure Pipelines can run Playwright or publish its results. These are separate capabilities. The current Microsoft association guide and FAQ list JavaScript Jest, and the Azure Test Plan task reference lists JavaScript Jest along with Python PyTest and Java Maven or Gradle inputs; the reviewed lists do not name JavaScript Playwright.
Microsoft’s roadmap entry, last updated April 22, 2025, said the supported framework list would be expanded to allow linking and executing JavaScript Playwright tests. That dated roadmap wording establishes that support was planned at that point; it does not establish whether the capability has shipped since. Before designing a workflow around selecting Playwright tests from a plan or triggering them from test cases, check the current task and association experience in your organization.
At the time of the cited Microsoft task reference, AzureTestPlan@0 was labeled Public Preview. Its documented inputs select tests from a plan or test run, using plan, suite, and configuration, and include behavior for failures and missing result files. Preview status and supported framework lists can change; check the current Azure Test Plan task reference before adopting it.

Check the current licensing terms for your organization before treating those requirements as permanent.
Use Playwright Workspaces only if you need hosted browsers
Microsoft’s Playwright Workspaces quickstart documents running tests against cloud-hosted browsers in a CI workflow and publishing results in the Azure portal. This is an optional browser-execution route, not a prerequisite for publishing ordinary Azure Pipelines test results. The quickstart warns that charges depend on total test minutes consumed; check the service’s current availability and pricing details before relying on it.
Troubleshoot missing or misleading results
The pipeline passes, but the Tests tab is empty
- Cause: The test command ran, but no supported result file was created or published.
- Fix: Confirm the reporter creates a supported format, inspect the job workspace for the output, and make
testResultsFilesmatch its path and extension.
The publishing task reports no files found
- Cause: The configured glob points to the wrong directory, the reporter writes elsewhere, or the test step did not produce results.
- Fix: Compare the task’s file pattern with the files created during the current run. Adjust the path or reporter output and avoid matching only a local-development directory that is not present on the agent.
Some tests appear, but others are missing
- Cause: The pattern may collect only one result file when the suite produces several, or it may exclude a project or worker’s output.
- Fix: Check all result files produced by the job and use a pattern that includes the intended files. Clear output from prior runs so old files do not make a partial pattern appear successful.
A failed test does not fail the pipeline, or results vanish after failure
- Cause: Pipeline failure behavior and result-publication behavior have not been configured together.
- Fix: Decide whether publishing should run after the test command fails, then configure step continuation and the publishing task’s
failTaskOnFailedTestssetting accordingly. Inspect the completed run to confirm it both reports the failure and returns the intended overall status.
Playwright tests cannot be selected from a plan
- Cause: Publishing pipeline results does not itself provide test-case association or plan-triggered execution, and the current framework support may not include Playwright.
- Fix: Confirm the current Azure Test Plan task and association guide support your framework. Keep CI execution and result reporting in Azure Pipelines while verifying the separate plan workflow in your tenant.
Make the workflow reliable and affordable
For ordinary CI, the most controllable setup is to execute browsers on your chosen pipeline agents, install the browser dependencies needed by the job, and publish results from files created during that same run. This keeps the test command, browser environment, output format, and pipeline status in one traceable job. Hosted browsers can reduce the need to manage browser execution infrastructure, but introduce a service dependency and usage charges based on minutes for Playwright Workspaces.
Keep result paths and reporter configuration under version control. Test the pipeline when changing Playwright, Node.js, the agent image, or reporter settings, because those changes can affect browser installation and output files. Use the Tests view to confirm reporting, not merely the shell exit code. For test-case traceability or plan-based selection, validate association and framework support independently rather than assuming that a published result creates a test-case link.

Or skip the browser setup
If the task is to capture a website screenshot rather than execute an end-to-end Playwright test suite, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Its API accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the endpoint can be used without setting up a browser in your pipeline.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does publishing Playwright results automatically associate tests with Azure Test Plans cases?
No. Result publication and test-case association are separate steps; association requires supported framework integration.
Is Playwright Workspaces required to use Azure Pipelines with Playwright?
No. It is an optional route for cloud-hosted browsers; Azure Pipelines can run tests on your own agents.
