To run Playwright tests on Google Cloud Compute Engine, create a Linux VM, connect to it, install your project’s runtime and locked dependencies, install the browser build and Linux packages that match your Playwright version, then run the tests headlessly. For a Node.js project using Chromium, the key browser setup command is npx playwright install --with-deps chromium. Playwright runs headlessly by default, so routine tests do not need a desktop environment.
1. Create a Linux Compute Engine VM
In the Google Cloud console, open Compute Engine > VM instances, choose Create instance, and configure the instance’s region and zone, operating system image, machine type, boot disk, and access method. Follow your organization’s network and identity policies; avoid exposing SSH broadly to the internet. Google Cloud also supports creating instances with gcloud compute instances create, including custom configurations. See the Google Cloud instance creation guide for current console and CLI steps.
There is no universally correct machine type for Playwright. Choose based on how many tests and browser processes will run concurrently, the number of browser engines, available memory per worker, run duration, and whether the VM stays on between jobs. Google describes E2 as a cost-optimized general-purpose family; its shared-core types time-share physical CPU, so they are not automatically a good fit for parallel browser workloads. N4 offers standard, high-CPU, and high-memory configurations with different memory per vCPU. Those are machine-family specifications, not Playwright performance benchmarks. Check current zone availability and pricing, then measure your own workload before resizing or committing to a shape. See Google Cloud general-purpose machine families.
2. Connect and install the project runtime
Connect using the access method approved for your project, such as the console’s SSH option or your organization’s configured SSH workflow. Once connected, install the runtime version and package manager required by the repository. Do not assume every Playwright project uses Node.js; use the project’s actual language and dependency instructions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a Node.js project with a committed npm lockfile, run the install from the repository root:
npm ci
npm ci installs dependencies from the lockfile rather than updating it. If the project uses another package manager or runtime, use its lockfile-preserving install procedure instead. Keep the Playwright package version pinned through the project’s dependency files so the browser installation and test runner remain aligned.
3. Install the matching browser and Linux dependencies
For a Node.js project running Chromium on Linux, install the browser binary and its system dependencies together:

npx playwright install --with-deps chromium
To install dependencies separately, Playwright also provides npx playwright install-deps chromium; install the browser with npx playwright install chromium. Use the project’s local Playwright CLI, as in these commands, rather than an unrelated global installation. Playwright documents that “Each version of Playwright needs specific versions of browser binaries to operate.” If you upgrade Playwright, run the browser installation command again so the required browser build is present. See the Playwright browser guide.

If the project tests Firefox or WebKit rather than Chromium, install the corresponding browser instead; consult the browser guide for supported browser names and platform requirements. Installing one browser is sufficient only if the test configuration uses that browser.
4. Run tests headlessly
From the project root, run the command the repository uses for its test suite. A typical Playwright Test invocation is:

npx playwright test
Playwright Test launches browsers headlessly by default. A graphical desktop is not required for this routine remote workflow. If you need headed execution on Linux to inspect a test, install Xvfb and run the test command through it:
xvfb-run npx playwright test
The Playwright CI guide documents this headed Linux pattern and notes that headless is the default. See Playwright CI.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Set parallelism and size from observed results
Begin with one worker for CI-style runs. Playwright recommends workers: 1 in CI as a stability and reproducibility baseline; a more powerful self-hosted system may benefit from additional workers. Set the value in the project’s Playwright configuration, for example:

import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
workers: 1,
});
Change the configuration in the format already used by your project rather than adding a second config file. Increase concurrency only after checking CPU load, memory pressure, total runtime, and failure rate. More workers can mean more simultaneous browser processes and higher resource use; a machine-family label alone does not establish how quickly your suite will run.
6. Troubleshoot common failures
- Browser executable is missing or its version does not match: install the browser using the project’s local CLI with
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium, substituting the browser your tests use. Repeat after changing the Playwright version. - Browser exits during startup or reports missing shared libraries: install the Linux packages for the selected browser with
npx playwright install-deps chromiumor the combined--with-depscommand, then retry. - Headed launch fails because no display is available: use the default headless run, or install and invoke Xvfb with
xvfb-run npx playwright test. - Tests become unstable as workers increase: return to one worker, then observe CPU, memory, runtime, and failures while adjusting parallelism. If resources remain constrained, evaluate a different VM shape using your workload rather than assuming a universal minimum.
- The reason for a browser launch failure is unclear: enable Playwright browser debug logging and rerun the failing command:
DEBUG=pw:browser npx playwright test. Use the output to distinguish launch/configuration problems from test failures.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page image rather than run an interactive Playwright test suite, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It is not a replacement for Playwright assertions, workflows, or browser automation. Its API documentation covers request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes known cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Can I run Playwright tests on a Compute Engine VM without a desktop?
Yes. Playwright Test runs headlessly by default, so a desktop is unnecessary for routine tests. Use Xvfb only when you need headed Linux execution.

Do I need to reinstall browsers after upgrading Playwright?
Yes, if the upgraded Playwright version requires different browser binaries. Run the browser installation command for the project’s selected browser after upgrading.
Which Compute Engine machine type should I choose?
The right shape depends on your test concurrency, browser count, memory use, runtime, and budget. The available documentation does not establish a universal minimum or a Playwright benchmark for a named machine type.
